Lake Orta – Italy

Finding a moment of pure serenity is one of the best feelings that I can think of while sea or lakeside. Usually I find myself having to travel somewhere far and remote to find that feeling. I think of paying long-tail boat captains to go island hoping in the Gulf of Thailand, deep sea excursions in Indonesia. An urban setting of any size does not come to mind though but after seeing Lake Orta, I may have found that balance at the foot of the Italian Alps.

Nietzsche was inspired here, Balzac was drawn to it and Robert Browning mentions it in his poem “By the Fireside.” I don’t blame them. The Alps serve as a backdrop to the Baroque architecture in the town of Pella while the Island of St. Giulio sits at the center of the lake surrounded by a sense of mystique – almost like the center of a story where the protagonist is unable to get the local townspeople to tell him about the mysterious island.

This video, IL LAGO DORATO (On Golden Lake), by Vimeo user PLMONZA captures the serenity and mystique of this beautiful Italian gem.

In Cambodia Luxury Means Private Islands

Song Saa CambodiaDeveloping a private island isn’t easy, especially in Cambodia, but when done successfully it’s akin to recreating the Garden of Eden. With Cambodias tourism industry rapidly expanding, and higher end tourists taking notice of the country an increasing number of luxury boutique resorts are sprouting up. CNN.com recently geature Rory and Melita Hunter who have created what is set to become Cambodia’s most luxurious resort, Song Saa Island.

Song Saa, which is set to open on December 31 is the vision of Rory and Melita Hunter who have turned their island dreams into reality. The construction of the 27 one-bedroom villas are near completion and will cost upwards of $2,000 per night. Here is what CNN had to say about the project.

Rory is a former advertising executive and Melita is a former set designer. Originally from Australia, they came to Phnom Penh and set up a business renovating old French colonial apartments and leasing them to expats. They never planned to become developers until they stumbled upon two small islands in southern Cambodia while on an excursion. The islands are called Song Saa which means “Sweethearts” in Khmer.

They bought the local land rights to the islands for $15,000 from two families living there. The Hunters knew they didn’t really “own” the islands because in Cambodia, foreigners are not able to own land outright. They negotiated with the Cambodian government to lease the islands for 99 years.

The Hunters then started their plan of developing a high-end villa resort. They put in $370,000 of their own money as seed capital. They’ve since raised several rounds of financing from mainly European investors for this $21 million project.

Apple Co-Founder Allen to Sell Private Island

07395xv61u77f_2061The Seattle Post-Intelligencer recently listed google co-founder and uber-billionaire Paul Allen’s Anacortes Washington island on the market for 13.5 million.  Allen purchased “Allan Island” in 1992 and reportedly to build a vacation home. However later he purchased up Spetty Peninsual site on nearby Lopez Island in 1996 and abandoned his original plans.

Allan Island, named for a Nacy hero, not the Billionaire (hence the name change), is an almost entirely undeveloped 292 acre island. The island boasts one modest house – a caretakers cabin fitted with water, septic and generator. There is also a grass airstrip and a boat dock.

So, they packed up their belongings, including two dogs and headed off to Africa, where they will reside for the next couple of years.

From Chicago’s hot dogs to Brazil’s BBQ to Scotland’s microwavable Haggis to Ethopia’s massive mangos, you’d think this was a foodie travel blog – but it’s not. Instead, it’s about Nick Bartlett’s cultural encounters as he travels. He may not ride a camel across the Sahara but he does eat well. He also enjoys his experiences along the way.
