Does Social Media Help Salespeople Sell?

DALLAS, May 10, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Social media technologies have re-shaped how we interact. But do they help salespeople sell?

Not according to the results of two surveys presented at the 2012 annual convention of the Southwestern Psychological Association in Oklahoma, City. The surveys, reported by behavioral scientists, Trelitha R. Bryant and George W. Dudley at Behavioral Sciences Research Press in Dallas, Texas, were presented April 13, 2012. Bryant and Dudley asked 4,768 salespeople (67% men, 33% women, average age 40) in more than 1,000 U.S. companies which form of client communication is most helpful for generating new sales. The salespeople were surveyed as part of a standard assessment protocol for sales professionals which included the Sales Preference Questionnaire (SPQ*GOLD), a psychological test used worldwide to detect emotional discomfort associated with prospecting for new business. Almost 70% (+/-1%) said established forms of communication (face-to-face and telephone contact) were most helpful generating new sales. Only 10% (+/-.14%) claimed email was most effective and less than 10% said other forms of computer-mediated communication were most effective. Results were not age-related.

"Further analyses uncovered another relationship," Dudley said. "Salespeople claiming social media is most effective might be struggling with sales call reluctance, an emotional impediment to production characterized by apprehension, conflict, hesitation or avoidance specifically associated with sales prospecting. They had elevated prospecting distress scores on eleven of the twelve forms of sales call reluctance measured by the test."

To confirm their results, the research team conducted a follow-up study of 1,512 additional salespeople (64%male; 36% female, average age 40). The outcome was essentially the same (68% said conventional, 2.8% computer-mediated). "The second study confirmed what we learned in the first," Bryant said, "including the link with sales call reluctance.Computer-mediated social media may help find a date, keep tabs on old friends or support a political campaign. But most salespeople don't think it's as helpful as conventional person-to-person contact for generating new sales."

About Behavioral Sciences Research Press Behavioral Sciences Research Press (BSRP) has been advancing the science of selecting salespeople since 1979. The Dallas, Texas based organization is known worldwide for applications based on rigorous scientific development and field-tested effectiveness. Erasing Painful Memories: Drug and Behavioral Therapies Will Help Us Forget Toxic Thoughts (preview)

Feature Articles | Mind & Brain See Inside

The caustic imprint of a traumatic memory may fade or vanish with new drug and behavioral therapies

By Jerry Adler | May 10, 2012|

The rat is on a carousel with clear plastic sides, rotating slowly in a small room. As it looks out through the plastic, it sees markings on the walls of the room from which it can determine its position. At a certain location it receives a foot shockor, in experimenters jargon, a negative reinforcement. When that happens, the rat turns sharply around and walks tirelessly in the opposite direction, so it never reaches that same place in the room again. It will do this to the point of exhaustion.

Question: How do you get the rat to stop walking? Note that just turning off the shock will not suffice, because the rat will not allow itself to enter the danger zone. The rat needs an intervention that helps it forget its fear or that overrides its response with a competing signal of safety.

Minus 417 Miracle Immediate Wrinkle Filler

"Instant filling action with continuous age and expression wrinkle reduction."

Rating: C-

Michelle says: When I'm not testing products for the Beauty Board, I cover faith and values as a beat. So I'm quite familiar with miracles. I was pretty excited about my Minus 417 filler, because it promises divine intervention. A company wouldn't actually lie about this, would it? The first time I applied this smooth cream infused with essential oils, (the jar includes a little application spatula), I was blown away. It really works! All those fine lines around my mouth, forehead and upper lip area gone! I was plotting ways to quit my job so I could become a full-time distributor and then I looked in the mirror 20 minutes later. Those little buggers were back. For a quick fix, and I mean quick, this wrinkle filler truly does the job. But after using it for a month, I still don't see the overall younger skin I was promised. For this very hefty price, I'd rather save the money and put it toward Botox.

'Grey's Anatomy' recap: Don't Know When I'll Be Back Again

GONE, BABY, GONEDon't be deceived by Arizona and Callie's happy faces -- there's not much to smile about when this episode ends.

Earlier today, creatorShonda Rhimes told EW that in addition to a big death, viewers should be prepared for something bad to happen in next weeks season finale.

Knowing that, I watched the penultimate episode with bated breath, constantly looking for clues of what impending doom might befall Seattle Grace next week. I watched Arizona break the news to her brothers best friend Nick that his cancer was incurable, and thought that maybe this would lead to a bigger storyline. I watched April lose all possible job offers, including a place at Seattle Grace, and surmised, Oh, this is setting up her downfall. I got my answer, however, in the last moments of the episode when a closing shot of an airplane carrying majority of our doctors crashed.

Yes, you read that right, and no, you didnt stumble upon one of Doc Jensens old Lost recaps, may they rest in peace. We dont know any details yet, but a plane carrying Meredith, Derek, Cristina, Arizona, and Sloan has crashed, split open in the middle of the wilderness. Maybe some of you predicted this when you saw them all on the plane, but -- paint me oblivious -- I actually gasped in those last moments. I know thats a lot to process (it certainly was for me), so while you get your bearings, lets start at the beginning.

Chief Hunt and the other head surgeons are in game-time mode in the conference room as they try and figure out which of their docs are leaving the nest. But while the surgeons powwow, the doctors with the real decisions to make are partying at Casa de la Grey, taking celebratory shots, and turning the music off every time a phone rings, lest it be a hospital with an offer. That included April, who got her first of many calls from hospitals revoking their offers. The second "retract call" came during lunchtime at the hospital where Cristina was on hand to pick up, put on her best high-pitched Kepner voice, and stick it right back to the bad news bearer.

I absolutely loved seeing Cristina stand up for Kepner when there have been so many moments when shes really laid it on her. To me, it showed a true moment of unity as these doctors all go their separate ways. But though that moment was a bright spot, things continued to go downhill for April until she landed smack down at the bottom when Hunt told her that even Seattle Grace couldnt keep her on staff. April is seriously unraveling, and even though shes a pretty irritating character, I can't help but really feel for her.

NEXT: Mixed signals abound...

Grey's Anatomy stars sign up for two more seasons

People News

Ellen Pompeo

'Grey's Anatomy' stars Ellen Pompeo and Patrick Dempsey have signed up for two more seasons of the show.

Ellen, Patrick, Sandrah Oh, Justin Chambers, James Pickens Jr. and Chandra Wilson have reportedly put pen to paper on new two-year deals that will see the ABC medical drama continue through the 2013/14 season, taking the programme past a 10th series, according to TVLine.

'Grey's Anatomy' - which is currently in its eighth season - attracted 9.25 million viewers in the US last week, and the show looks set to become one of the longest-running medical dramas in TV history.

Earlier this year, Katherine Heigl admitted she wants to return to the show, despite leaving in a storm of controversy in 2010 after criticising her character Dr. Izzie Stevens.

She previously said: 'I've told them I want to [return]. I don't know ... Being a showrunner and being a writer of a TV series like that is so complicated that I mean she's got how many characters are there now? There's a lot and so she's balancing about 40 different storylines, so I don't know if it fits in to their sort of vision for this season or next or however many seasons it goes.'

Series narrator and lead female star Ellen - who has played Meredith Grey since the show started in 2005 - insisted she would be happy to continue portraying the surgical resident.

She explained: 'If I hear from the fans that they want us to keep going, then I would continue because we owe them everything.'

ABC renews 'Grey's Anatomy,' 'Revenge,' 'Once …" and more

ABC has renewed seven of its series: "Grey's Anatomy," "Revenge," "Once Upon a Time," "Suburgatory," "The Middle," "Modern Family" and "Castle."

Quite a mouthful, eh?

"Modern Family," though experiencing a dip in viewers, will come back for Season 4, and "Grey's Anatomy" will enter its ninth. "Castle" has been a steady performer in its Monday slot; its renewal will take the crime dramedy into its fifth season, helping it reach the 100-episode benchmark.

"The Middle" has held its own on the network in the Wednesday comedy block -- helping to pass the viewer baton as a lead-in for freshman series "Suburgatory."

"Suburgatory" has some fellow rookies with which to revel in the renewal elation: The fairy-tale drama "Once Upon a Time" had an impressive debut last fall, with 13 million viewers and a 4.0 in the 18-49 demo, and it has continued to perform well for the network, helping the show to land a spot next season. The devilishly soapy "Revenge" also will get a sophomore season.

The renewals come on the heels of news that "Cougar Town" is moving from ABC to TBS.

"The partnership with UC San Diego will help Cubic realize its vision of mobility in the future -- what we call Nextcity," said Matt Cole, senior vice president of strategy and business development. "Consumer mobile devices, wireless communications and account-based payment processing create the opportunity to make significant new information available to travelers."

Through integration of regional transport payments and traveler data, Nextcity will deliver personalized information to passengers so they can make informed travel choices. "Our research will make better use of the existing data and seek innovative ways to apply this information and technology to better the traveler's experience, and improve the efficiency and utilization of the transportation system and a city's resources," said Pradip Mistry, vice president of engineering.

The research partnership potentially spans mobile and web technologies, wireless networking, location-based services, data warehousing and system architecture and analytics, all areas of expertise at the university.

Travel for Free: How Credit Card "Churners" Do It

A few years ago, I started searching for the best ways to save money on airline flights.I wanted to see the world -- or at least the United States -- but I didn't have a bottomless budget. In the end, I found something surprising.

There is a group of people who are flying for free by using a strategy that is the complete opposite of what most people do. Here's how it works:

How to Fly for Free

It probably comes as no surprise to you that a great way to fly for cheap is by using frequent flyer miles. It's pretty simple: cash in your miles, get a free flight, travel for less.

At first, I assumed that you had to fly all the time to earn frequent flyer miles. They are called "frequent flyer" miles after all. As it turns out, that's the complete opposite of what is true. The best way to earn frequent flyer miles isn't by flying at all. It's by finding the best credit card deals for earning frequent flyer miles, free hotel stays, and rewards points.

Here's Your Bonus...

The credit card market is extremely competitive and very lucrative. As a result, credit card companies will hand out huge frequent flyer bonuses to get you to pick up their card.

A typical bonus for getting a new credit card is 25,000 frequent flyer miles. Occasionally, you can get as many as 100,000 frequent flyer miles just by signing up for a new card.

In case you're wondering, 100,000 frequent flyer miles is enough to get you a round-trip business class ticket from the U.S. to Europe. That's a value of about $5,000 for taking 10 minutes to fill out a credit card application.

Despite the huge payoff, I was still skeptical at first. How many cards could I apply for? Would this strategy hurt my credit score?

SUPER WHY! Around the World Adventure Kicks off PBS KIDS Summer Learning Initiative This June

ARLINGTON, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

To help bridge this summer learning gap, PBS KIDS is providing families with the SUPER WHY! When children go back to school in the fall, teachers typically spend between four and six weeks re-teaching material that students have forgotten over the summer, said Lesli Rotenberg, senior vice president, Childrens Media, PBS. We want to equip families with tools to prevent this summer slide, and to make summer a time for learning and exploring. At PBS KIDS, we know that kids learn the most from content that is both educational and engaging, which is why were offering a range of activities across platforms to help kids and parents build key skills while having fun this summer.
