Last day to enter Spacing’s Creative Mapping contest

May 31st, 2012 By Spacing // No Comments DEADLINE TODAY! Spacing magazine presents the CREATIVE MAPPING CONTEST

Do you love maps? Are you an illustrator, graphic designer, or visual storyteller? Spacing wants you to submit your original creative maps inspired by a Canadian city.

DEADLINE EXTENDED: Thursday, May 31st, 2012

COST: Free!

HOW TO ENTER: You must register to enter. Send us an email and we will provide you with uploading details. EMAIL: creativemapping@spacing.ca

KEEP UP TO DATE: Feel free to RSVP to our event listing on Facebook in order to receive reminders about the deadline and other announcements (such as prizes).

WHAT MAKES A MAP CREATIVE (see examples at bottom of page)? The art of map-making has taken tremendous strides in the digital age. In the last decade, there has been an explosion of maps that are not necessarily meant to be used for directions, but instead are considered works of art and inspired imagination. We want you to create an illustrative map that reflects a Canadian city (or a neighbourhood, community) or is inspired by the urban elements that make up a city (examples: waterfront, transit, cycling, walking, graffiti, parks, architecture, laneways/alleys, streets, traffic, taxis, weather, sewers, infrastructure, etc.)

How many maps can I submit? As many as you like.

When will the winners know that their map is being published? Spacing will email all winners in the summer to make sure we have the optimal file for printing, as well as make sure your name is spelled correctly. Nothing will be published in Spacing without your permission.

Are there prizes? Yes (but no cash). Besides all the fame you will receive for being published in Spacing (!?!), there will be a variety of prizes from sponsors and Spacing advertisers. We will announce the prizes available as we get closer to the deadline. Spacing is assembling a team or jurors from across Canada, including a few Spacing editors. We are trying to get a mix of jurors from different professions (cartographers, architects, graphic designers, illustrators, and Spacing readers). We will publish the jurors names after the final submission deadline of April 30th.

Ways of keeping warm

Welcome to June, the month that, according to the show tune, is busting out all over. Also, June is currently zipping its hoodie, pulling on extra socks, and turning on the heater.

For us and our pets, June is a time of new focus, namely finding ways of keeping warm. There are a number of such ways.

First option: find the bit of watery sunlight that remains, ensure a blanket or rug is present, and find a friend. Ruby and Bon Bon have employed this option.

So have Stellar and Harlem...

...and Tigger and Zoe.

The sun has gone? Yes, it usually has. So find someone of like mind and similar appearance, and snuggle. I don't know the names of these "bichpoos" (Vanessa, can you tell us?), but they know how to keep themselves warm.

Josie Marans sunscreen not only protects against sun damage, but repairs and reverses damage already done to your skin. Find it at Sephora or online at JosieMaranCosmetics.com starting at $14.

It wasnt too long ago I was begging for warmer weather, but now when I step outside Im reminded what a double-edged sword Augusta summers are. Lets dwell on the positives, though, and list some beach weekend must-haves.

You wont go to the beach without getting sand everywhere that you dont want it, but with smart preparation you can have as little as possible. One way to do this is by laying out a beach blanket underneath your towels, bags and coolers.

Lands End people who know how to do the beach right sells a velour beach blanket measuring 78 inches by 70 inches that will give you ample room to stake out a beach HQ and keep your water bottles less gritty.

If you believe everything you read, it seems like even good things are supposedly killing us like sunscreen. Thats right, some environmental groups are saying traditional sunscreen might be doing more harm than good.

Im no tree hugger, but Im a sucker for anything that says mineral or all-natural if theres a shadow of doubt in my mind about a product. Josie Marans daily sun protection, using argan oil to create an SPF of 30 or higher, is a great all-natural alternative to slathering on the white greasy stuff.

Medical school entry test fails to widen access to profession

The Irish Times - Friday, June 1, 2012

SEN FLYNN, Education Editor

THE NEW entry and selection test for entry to medicine known as the Hpat has done little to widen access to the profession, according to a draft review for the Higher Education Authority.

The review also concludes that students who can afford to take expensive preparatory courses for the Hpat (Health Professions Admission Test) outperform others despite claims the exam presents a level playing field for all students. More than 50 per cent of Hpat candidates take commercial coaching courses, the review states.

The review by the medical schools and other experts concludes that students who repeat the Hpat perform significantly better.

In all, one-third of successful applicants in the past two years were actually repeat candidates, with many of them dropping out of other much-coveted college courses. More than 85 per cent of students who repeated the exam improved their scores.

The findings are unlikely to be welcomed by the Department of Education, which has promoted the Hpat as a new-style exam where compared to the Leaving Cert there is less reliance on rote learning.

But medical schools will be under pressure to make changes before the 2013 exam next February.

Education sources say possible changes include:

* Hpat scores will be valid for a period of one year only;

First endowed medical school chair created in Ga. to focus on sexuality and religion

ATLANTA The Morehouse School of Medicine is creating what is being called the first endowed chair on sexuality and religion at a U.S. medical school.

The Atlanta medical school on Thursday announced it raised $2 million for the endowed chair, and it will begin a one-year national search to hire someone to fill it.

The chairperson will develop ways to train physicians and theologians on a wide range of sexual health issues that include contraception, rape prevention, unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases.

The chair will report to Dr. David Satcher, a former U.S. Surgeon General who issued a controversial report on sexual health in 2001. Satcher is now a Morehouse administrator.

A spokeswoman for the Association of American Medical Colleges said she was not aware of a similar endowed chair anywhere else.

Satcher and others at Morehouse previously coordinated national panel discussions on sexual health that involved organizations ranging from the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops to the Planned Parenthood Federation of America.

The medical school, founded in 1975, has an enrollment of about 300. It is separate from Morehouse College, a historically black university located across the street.

The medical school previously created an endowed chair for mental health issues, which was co-funded by entertainer Bill Cosby and child psychiatrist Dr. Alvin Poussaint. Satcher occupies that position.

The new chair is named for two Florida-based benefactors the Rev. Marta Weeks, an ordained Episcopal priest, and the Rev. David Richards, a retired Episcopal bishop.

The chair will teach at Morehouse but will also be expected to work with other medical schools and religious academic institutions to help shape curricula elsewhere.

Liberty Moving Toward Sirius Control

Mike Farrell -- Multichannel News, 5/31/2012 6:19:50 PM

Sirius XM Radio continued to try to stave off Liberty Media chairman John Malone's advances, stating in Securities and Exchange Commission filings that it is in discussions with the media giant to work out a deal that would be mutually beneficial to all shareholders. Liberty has been trying to gain control of Sirius since March, when it filed a petition with the Federal Communications Commission to gain de facto control of its satellite assets. While those efforts were rejected by the FCC on May 4, Liberty vowed to refile its petition. Liberty made good on that promise Thursday, outlining a path to control of Sirius that would include converting half of the preferred stock it owns in Sirius to common stock, giving it 32% of Sirius' outstanding shares. The media giant said in an SEC filing Thursday that it would move quickly to gain control of Sirius' board of directors by nominating a majority of its directors. Liberty, which owns preferred stock convertible into about 46% of Sirius' outstanding shares, currently can nominate five of its 13-member board. Sirius countered in its own SEC filing that such nominations could require a special meeting of shareholders, which can only be called by two or more directors or the company CEO. To date no such request has been made to Sirius. Sirius said in SEC documents that it is in discussions with Liberty "to explore possible transactions with respect to its ownership interest in Sirius, although we have not reached agreement with respect to a specific transaction that would be mutually beneficial to both our common and preferred stockholders." Sirius stressed there is no guarantee that such an agreement could be reached and added that any developments from those discussions were not expected to be disclosed. The most recent moves are a culmination in what has been a contentious battle between Liberty and Sirius CEO Mel Karmazin, who told shareholders at Sirius' annual meeting last week that he could not stop Liberty from buying shares on the open market, but hoped that they would pay a premium for control. Liberty may not have to, according to one analyst. In a research note Thursday, Canaccord Genuity media analyst Tom Eagan said he expected Liberty to buy Sirius shares on the open market. "Contrary to what many on the Street expect, we do not believe that Liberty needs FCC approval to take control of Sirius," Eagan wrote. "We believe they need to merely inform the FCC if they intend, for example, to increase their stake to above 51% (from 46.2% as of the last filing). Or Liberty could negotiate with the board to take control with, say 49.9%."

Liberty Media Steps Up Effort for Sirius XM Control

Liberty Media (LMCA) is stepping up its efforts to gain control of satellite radio broadcaster Sirius XM Radio (SIRI), according to regulatory papers filed Thursday.

In filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission, the two companies continued a cat and mouse game as Liberty Media has fought recently for control of Sirius.

In May, the Federal Communications Commission rejected a bid by Liberty Media to take control of Sirius. Liberty Media, Sirius' largest shareholder, now wants the FCC to reconsider that decision and has taken action to support their position that they should control the smaller company.

Liberty Media said in its filing that it intends to convert half of the preferred stock it owns in Sirius into common shares, which would give Liberty a total of 32% of the common stock. Liberty Media also said it will move as soon as practicable to take control of the satellite-radio broadcaster's board.

Sirius countered with its own filing Thursday afternoon, stating that it had been engaged in discussions with Liberty Media to explore possible transactions with respect to its ownership interest in Sirius.

But Sirius stressed that no agreement has been reached with respect to a specific transaction that would be mutually beneficial to both our common and preferred stockholders.

In addition, Sirius stated: There is no assurance that these discussions will result in any specific action or transaction. We do not expect to disclose developments with respect to these discussions.

Liberty Medias shares rose $1.28, or 1.53%, to $84.98. Sirius shares rose 1 cent, or 0.53% to $1.90.

Liberty Tells U.S. It Wants to Take Control of Sirius XM Radio

By Todd Shields and Alex Sherman - 2012-05-31T22:52:50Z

John Malones Liberty Media Corp. (LMCA), the holder of interests in businesses ranging from cable programmer Starz LLC to the Atlanta Braves baseball team, told U.S. regulators it wants to take over Sirius XM Radio Inc.

Liberty plans to assert control of the largest U.S. satellite radio provider after receiving approval from the Federal Communications Commission, the Englewood, Colorado-based company said in a filing today. Liberty has asked the FCC to reconsider the agencys May 4 dismissal of its application for permission to take control, according to a May 30 filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Libertys move has fueled speculation Malone wants to spin off his stake in New York-based Sirius, led by Chief Executive Officer Mel Karmazin. Liberty will probably execute a so-called Reverse Morris Trust, which involves splitting off its Sirius (SIRI) stake as a separate entity and giving its stockholders the option to hold or sell their Sirius shares, according to James Ratcliffe, an analyst at Barclays Capital Inc. in New York.

To execute the spinoff, Liberty must have Siriuss board approval. Sirius is in talks with Liberty about the companys ownership interest, according to a separate filing by Sirius. It said Sirius doesnt expect to disclose developments in the discussions.

Courtnee Ulrich, a Liberty spokeswoman, didnt respond to a telephone call and e-mail. Patrick Reilly, a Sirius spokesman, declined to comment.

Malone, Libertys chairman, saved Sirius from bankruptcy in 2009 with a $530 million loan. Liberty boosted its stake in Sirius to 46.2 percent from 40 percent earlier this month.

Libertys interest in a Reverse Morris Trust is to save on capital gains taxes, said analyst Brett Harriss, a Gabelli & Co. analyst in Rye, New York. Distributing Sirius shares to Liberty stockholders through a spinoff instead of selling them on the open market lets the company avoid paying taxes on the sale, he said.

Liberty would also have the right to change management at the company if it gains control of the board. Malone may not want to remove Karmazin, who saved the company from bankruptcy since he took over in 2008, said Harriss, who has a hold rating on Sirius shares.

All the comments that Liberty has made toward Mel have been positive, and Mels done a good job increasing the companys profitability, Harriss said in an interview. That being said, I could see a situation where there could be conflicting personalities. These are two high-powered guys in Mel and John.

Libertarian enters Assembly race

Libertarian candidate Jim Maas has announced that he will make another bid for the state Assembly.

Maas of Rothschild is running for the 85th Assembly District. The seat is being vacated by Rep. Donna Seidel, D-Wausau, who is a candidate for next week's 29th Senate recall race.

Democrats Jeff Johnson and Mandy Wright, both of Wausau, already have declared for the race. Pat Snyder of Schofield is the lone Republican in the field.

Friday is the deadline to file nomination papers. The partisan primary will be held Aug. 14 and the general election is Nov. 6.

Maas ran for the Assembly in 2010, but was defeated by Seidel. Maas ran this spring for the Marathon County Board, but was defeated by District 17 incumbent Elroy Zemke.

Fate of Chagos Islands to be decided

They will however reassure the Americans that the Diego Garcia base can stay, albeit with different landlords.

Mr Ramgoolam is likely make the argument to Mr Cameron that the original decision to remove the Chagossians was unlawful.

David Snoxell, a former British high commissioner to Mauritius and secretary of the Chagos Islands all-party parliamentary group, said: "What better opportunity could there be than for the two leaders to discuss the issues face to face?

"What better way to mark the Queen's long reign, which has seen the transition of Empire to Commonwealth, than by bringing an end to this tragedy and relic of Empire in the Indian Ocean and allowing the Queen's subjects to return to their beloved islands?"

The meeting between the prime ministers comes as the Government faces multiple legal challenges over the islands.

In July the High Court in London is due to hold a judicial review on legality of the 200-mile Marine Protection Area created in 2010 in the final months of the Labour government.

Chagossians exiled on Mauritius argue that the wildlife haven was created principally to prevent islanders' returning, as it contained a ban on all types of fishing, which would be vital to returnees' survival.

In a US diplomatic cable unearthed by WikiLeaks, Foreign Office official Colin Roberts "asserted that establishing a marine park would, in effect, put paid to resettlement claims of the archipelago's former residents".

Mr Ramgoolam's government is bringing a separate case before the International Tribunal of the Law of the Sea in Hamburg that Britain did not have the right to declare the conservation area. Mauritius is being represented in the case by Philippe Sands, the leading international human rights lawyer.

Mauritius has tried to prove its trustworthiness to Britain and the US by agreeing to have a court to try pirates operating off the east African coast. It believes it is on stronger ground to make its arguments about sovereignty and the right of the islanders to resettle.
