Under attack: policemen stand guard outside the Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education after a letter bomb exploded there in August 2011.

The shoe-box-sized package was addressed to Armando Herrera Corral. It stated that he was the recipient of an award and it was covered in official-looking stamps. Herrera, a computer scientist at the Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education in Mexico City, shook the box a number of times, and something solid jiggled inside. What could it be? He was excited and a little nervous so much so, that he walked down the hall to the office of a colleague, robotics researcher Alejandro Aceves Lpez, and asked Aceves to open it for him.

Aceves sat down at his desk to tear the box open. So when the 20-centimetre-long pipe bomb inside exploded, on 8 August 2011, Aceves took the full force in his chest. Metal pierced one of his lungs. He was in intensive care. He was really bad, says Herrera's brother Gerardo, a theoretical physicist at the nearby Centre for Research and Advanced Studies of the National Polytechnic Institute (Cinvestav). Armando Herrera Corral, who was standing nearby when the bomb went off, escaped with a burst eardrum and burns to his legs.

The next day, an eco-anarchist group calling itself Individuals Tending Towards Savagery (ITS) claimed responsibility for the bombing in a 5,500-word diatribe against nanotechnology that it published online. Police found a charred copy of a similar text in the detritus of the explosion. The bombers said that Herrera had been targeted for his role as director of the technology-transfer centre at the Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education (commonly known as Monterrey Tec), one of the major universities that has staked everything on the development of nanotechnology. The text talked of the potential for the field to cause environmental nanocontamination, and concluded that technology and civilization as a whole should be held responsible for any environmental catastrophe. Chillingly, the bombers listed another five researchers at Monterrey Tec as presumptive targets, as well as a further six universities.

Reporter Leigh Phillips talks about anti-science violence in Mexico.

You may need a more recent browser or to install the latest version of the Adobe Flash Plugin.

The incident had precedent. The ITS had already claimed responsibility for bomb attacks in April and May 2011, both targeting Carlos Alberto Camacho Olgun, head of engineering and nanotechnology at the Polytechnic University of the Valley of Mexico in Tultitln. The first bomb wounded a security guard; the second was identified and disposed of before anyone could be hurt. Last December, the group struck again this time at the Polytechnic University of Pachuca, where a package containing gunpowder exploded in the hand of a teacher, causing minor burns (see 'A litany of letter bombs'). No other developing country has suffered a comparable string of anti-technology attacks.

One year on from the bombing at Monterrey Tec, the repercussions are still being felt. Armando Herrera Corral and Aceves will not speak to Nature about what happened. It's too sensitive, you understand? is all Aceves would say. Herrera has left his job as director of the university's technology park and is now head of postgraduate studies. Other Mexican universities with nanotechnology research programmes have evacuated campuses in response to bomb threats, and universities across the country have introduced stringent security measures. Some researchers are anxious for their own safety; some are furious about being targets. But all the researchers that Nature spoke to in Mexico are adamant that the attacks will not discourage them from their research or dissuade students from entering the field.

So far, there has been little explanation of where the vitriol is coming from. Why are radical environmental groups targeting nanotechnology? Is this field being confronted with the same sort of militant hostility that has dogged genetic-modification research and animal testing? And why Mexico?

Research and Markets: The Top 50 Sleep Medicine Technology Companies Worldwide

DUBLIN--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/3ws6f5/the_top_50_sleep_m) has announced the addition of the "The Top 50 Sleep Medicine Technology Companies Worldwide" report to their offering.

Sleep disorders are very common and their frequency generally increases with age. A 2011 poll by the U.S. National Sleep Foundation found that more than half (60%) of Americans say that they experience a sleep problem every night or almost every night (i.e., snoring, waking in the night, waking up too early, or feeling un-refreshed when they get up in the morning). Insomnia is the most common sleep complaint, affecting some 30% of adults. It is estimated thatobstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is as prevalent as adult diabetes and asthma (yet 90% of people who have OSA remain undiagnosed and untreated).

The presence of a sleep disorder has a significant negative impact on the health and well-being of the individual e.g. OSA is a cause of daytime sleepiness and a risk factor for arterial hypertension, stroke and cardiac disorders. The high prevalence of sleep disorders also has a huge impact on society e.g. Harvard Medical School's American Insomnia Study, released last September, found that insomnia is costing the U.S. economy $63.2 billion in lost productivity every year. A 2010 study by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety found that in the United States, one in every six deadly crashes and one in eight crashes causing serious injury involved a drowsy driver.

Thus, the need for new technologies to diagnose and treat sleep disorders is pressing.

BG Medicine, Inc. Announces Publication of Important Galectin-3 Study Designed to Identify Adults in General …

WALTHAM, Mass., Aug. 30, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- BG Medicine, Inc. (BGMD), a company focused on the development and commercialization of novel cardiovascular diagnostics, announced today that the study, "Galectin-3, a Marker of Cardiac Fibrosis, Predicts Incident Heart Failure in the Community," was published online in the current issue of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology1 (JACC). The study, conducted by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute's (NHLBI) Framingham Heart Study, was designed to determine whether elevated levels of galectin-3 in the population at large identify those who are at increased risk for the development of heart failure. Galectin-3 levels were measured in blood specimens collected from 1996-1998 as part of a routine examination of 3,353 participants enrolled in the NHLBI-supported Framingham Offspring Cohort. The study demonstrated that men and women with baseline blood levels of galectin-3 in the highest quartile had heart failure incidence rates that were more than twice as high as those of all other study participants, over a ten year follow-up period.

"Our research at Framingham represents the first U.S.- based large-scale study to examine whether elevated levels of galectin-3 in the population at large can identify people who may be at risk for development of heart failure," said Daniel Levy, M.D., Director, Framingham Heart Study, National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. "Galectin-3 is associated with cardiac fibrosis, which plays an important role in the development of heart failure, so it may be useful in identifying patients at high risk for heart failure prior to the onset of symptoms and could point the way to earlier prevention and treatment strategies."

"The results published in JACC emphasize the significance of being able to detect factors that impact the identification and progression of heart failure, as nearly one in six people in the general adult population may have elevated levels of galectin-3 and be at risk," said Eric Bouvier, President and CEO of BG Medicine. "As part of our corporate strategy to develop and commercialize cardiovascular diagnostics that address significant medical needs, we filed a 510(k) for an expanded indication for the BGM Galectin-3(R) test with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in May 2012, and have obtained CE Mark in Europe. Subject to FDA clearance, the new application would expand the indicated use of our galectin-3 test to the general adult population to identify those with elevated levels of galectin-3, which is associated with an increased risk for the development of new-onset heart failure."

About Galectin-3 and Heart Failure

Galectin-3 is a unique carbohydrate-binding lectin, or protein, that binds to carbohydrates called beta-galactosides. Galectin-3 has been implicated in a variety of biological processes important in the development and progression of heart failure, and is believed to be a primary mediator of progressive cardiac fibrosis (abnormal thickening and stiffening of the heart muscle) and adverse remodeling (changes in the structure of the heart). Heart failure affects an estimated 5.8 million Americans, with approximately 670,000 new cases occurring each year. The direct and indirect cost of heart failure in the United States for 2010 is estimated to be $39.2 billion.

About the Framingham Heart Study

Led by the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI), the Framingham Heart Study is a leading observational, multi-generational study designed to track the development of cardiovascular disease and its common contributing factors. The study was initiated in 1948 and has been the source of key research findings regarding the contributions of hypertension, high cholesterol, cigarette smoking and other risk factors to the development of cardiovascular disease.

About BG Medicine, Inc.

BG Medicine, Inc. (BGMD) is a life sciences company focused on the discovery, development and commercialization of novel cardiovascular diagnostics to address significant unmet medical needs, improve patient outcomes and contain healthcare costs. The Company's first commercialized product, the BGM Galectin-3(R) test for use in patients with heart failure, is available in the United States and Europe. BG Medicine is also developing the CardioSCORE TM test, a blood test designed to identify individuals at high risk for near-term major cardiovascular events, such as heart attack and stroke. Career ladder shows youth medical careers

Middle school students interested in the medical field can learn about those professions as part of a career ladder at the medical school.

The Lebanon Health Career Ladder is a joint effort between the College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific-Northwest, Linn-Benton Community College and Oregon State University.

Volunteers from each school come to COMP-Northwest to teach middle school students about health professions.

Jaime Servin, director of the program spoke about the career ladder at the Lebanon Rotary Clubs Aug. 22 meeting.

The students start their day listening to a guest speaker in the lecture hall with their parents, Servin said. After the speaker, kids split up into small groups to learn about health occupations called breakout sessions.

A cohort of sixth-grade students began the program last year.

Some of those students will return this year. The college will pick up a new cohort of middle-school students.

The program will start enrolling sixth-grade students, but any middle school student will be accepted into the first year of the program as long as there is room, Servin said.

Second-year students will do more hands-on activities, Servin said.

Volunteers from OSU and LBCC will show the kids different career paths in medicine.

Harvard Dead Monkeys Make Top 10 List for Lab Violations

By Patrick Cole - 2012-08-30T04:01:00Z

Harvard Medical School logged its latest lab-monkey death this past spring when a cotton-top tamarin monkey died of thirst for lack of a water bottle. Then 41 deer mice died in April at a Harvard facility after their water source got cut off.

As with the monkey, the U.S. Department of Agriculture gave the countrys oldest institution of higher learning an official warning. In less than two years, four monkeys have died in Harvard labs, including one left in a cage as it went through a mechanical washer.

When you see multiple incidents at the same facility over a period of time, thats when you realize that this is indicative of a system-wide problem, said Michael Budkie, executive director of the nonprofit Stop Animal Exploitation Now!, in a phone interview.

The Milford, Ohio-based SAEN has placed Harvard on its top- 10 list of animal-welfare violators for the first half of 2012. The existence of enough violators to glean a top 10 helps indicate the scope of lab-animal abuse nationally.

The Animal Welfare Act, enforced by the USDAs Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, requires labs to handle research animals as carefully as possible to prevent trauma, overheating, physical harm, behavioral stress or unnecessary discomfort.

TRS Labs Inc., based in Athens, Georgia, ranked first on SAENs list with 23 violations affecting about 70 animals, Budkie said. TRS was cited for housing cats in a room that was 88 to 89 degrees. It also failed to separate two gerbils that had been fighting in a cage and to protect dogs from suffering injuries, according to a USDA report.

Several calls to TRS executives seeking comment werent returned.

Santa Cruz Biotechnology Inc. in California, which researches antibodies and animal health-care products, ranked second on the SAEN list with 11 citations affecting 85 animals. In April, an Aphis inspector found a goat with a broken leg whose cast had come off, according to the USDA report. The attending veterinarian said she didnt have time to attend to the goat because of her work load.

This facility was basically understaffed and it couldnt offer good care, Budkie said. Santa Cruz Biotechnology officials didnt respond to a request for comment.

Make-A-Wish fulfills teenager's dream of attending Harvard Medical School

Make-A-Wish, the organization known for making dreams come true for children with life-threatening medical conditions, has flown kids around the world, granted them shopping sprees and helped them meet their favorite celebrities.

Last week, the organization fulfilled one girls wish of attending Harvard Medical School.

My wish was inspired by my past medical problems, Gabrielle Samsock told FoxNews.com. When I went to Boston for surgeries, wed pass by Harvard and Id say, Daddy, Im going to go there when Im older.

Gabrielle, a 14-year-old high school freshman, who lives in Factoryville, Penn., was born with Shones syndrome, a rare congenital heart disease in which the valves on the left side of the heart are narrowed, and blood flow in and out of the heart is obstructed.

In March of 99, Gabrielle had a chronic respiratory infection, and her doctor did an X-ray to make sure she didnt have pneumonia, said Gabrielles mother, Melissa Samsock. He said her heart was too swollen for her body, and to make sure nothing was seriously wrong, he sent us to a cardiologist at Childrens Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). That was when we found out about her condition.

Gabrielle underwent her first surgery as a 1-year-old at CHOP to repair her aorta. She and her parents were referred to an expert at Boston Childrens Hospital where she has had multiple surgeries to balloon her valves and put in three different stents.

Her condition is not fatal, but she still needs a valve transplant surgery, which should ultimately fix her heart, her mother explained.

Gabrielle said all her time spent as a patient in the hospital fueled her desire to be on the other side of the situation as a doctor. Specifically, she hopes to one day become a pediatric cardiothoracic surgeon.

I was 8 years old when I decided I wanted to be a doctor, Gabrielle said. My parents laughed and were like, OK. I was little, and little kids always say those things, like I want to be a firefighter, or I want to be a policeman. But when I brought it up to Make-A-Wish, they were like, Wow, this is what you really want to do.

According to Gabrielle, when she told representatives from Make-A-Wish she wanted to attend medical school, Their jaws just dropped. They were so shocked. They said my wish was so unique and personal. I was just very excited to start my life.

(WMC-TV) The liberty Bowl recently received an extreme makeover. Those passing by might notice brighter lighting, new artificial turf, and an updated scoreboard.

But those are just a few of the upgrades at the new and improved Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium.

One of the most visible upgrades is the new jumbotron, which is one of the largest in any college stadium in the country.

And it wouldn't be an extreme makeover without having a reveal party to celebrate the "facelift."

Liberty will platoon QBs in opener at Wake Forest

Liberty football coach Turner Gill hasnt yet decided which of his two quarterbacks will start Saturdays season opener at Wake Forest. But he announced Tuesday just how Josh Woodrum and Brian Hudson will be used in Winston-Salem.

Both Woodrum and Hudson will get two series at minimum on Saturday with the hope that one of them will emerge as the better option once faced with playing against strong competition.

"They have both shown that theyve earned the chance to play," Gill said. "Thats probably the best way to sum it up. Both guys have really done well. Ive seen our players respond to both guys in a good way."

Woodrum, a redshirt freshman from Cave Spring in Roanoke, hasnt seen game action since Nov. 27, 2010, when his Knights team fell to Richlands in the Region IV championship game. Hudsons college game experience is minimal. He played during the second half of Libertys romp over Division II Kentucky Wesleyan last October and later in the month, staked to a 38-0 lead, played the second half of the Flames win at Charleston Southern.

The competition level will be a several notches higher on Saturday night for both players.

"Obviously a game is different from practice," Hudson said. "Weve been getting no contact. So that adds another dimension to it, to see how we can run, break tackles and make plays. Its definitely a different story from practice to a game. Some guys respond differently in practice and some guys respond differently in games, for better or for worse."

Early in training camp, Gill sounded frustrated at times that neither quarterback was able to win the job outright. But Tuesday, he reversed course a bit, noting that both players had performed exceptionally well in the final two weeks of practice and that both deserved the opportunity to show what they can do in a game setting before making a final decision on a starting quarterback going forward.

"Im excited by it," Gill said. "Ive got two pretty good quarterbacks. The alternative is having no good quarterbacks. I dont see it as a negative. I see it as a positive all the way around."

Allen suspended

Gill suspended junior running back Aldreakis Allen for the opener for a violation of team rules. Allen has led the Flames in rushing in each of the two seasons that hes played (2009, 2011). Allen missed the 2010 season while serving a school-related suspension.

Rep. Ron Paul did not get a speaking slot at the GOP convention. But a video paid tribute to him,and his son Sen. Rand Paul let Republicans know that his fathers brand of libertarianism remains a force within the party.

He gave no scheduled speech here; he had refused to let the Romney campaign pre-approve any comments he might have made. And his supporters fought hard and very vocally to the end unsuccessfully, as it turned out against the Republican Partys last-minute efforts to restrict the number and voice of future insurgents, obviously referencing the 177 delegates Mr. Paul had won in the partys presidential caucuses and primaries and were pushing to have his name at least entered into nomination before the roll call vote.

But it does the Republican Party and Mitt Romneys presidential campaign no good to alienate an active and unique slice of conservatism one with considerable overlap with the tea party movement.

So early Wednesday evening (before prime-time convention broadcasts), US Rep. Paul received a video tribute to his career. And in a speech a few minutes later, his son US Sen. Rand Paul let Republicans know that his fathers brand of libertarianism remains a force within the party.

In comments from a range of politicians at least one of whom confessed that at first he thought Ron Paul was crazy the 12-term Texas congressman was lauded as one who never wavered, never backed down.

I used to tell new members that they could make a difference or they could make a point, said Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell. Ron Paul is the only one whos made a difference by making a point.

New plan for remote Scottish islands

Published: Aug. 30, 2012 at 1:50 AM

EDINBURGH, Scotland, Aug. 30 (UPI) -- A new management plan for Scotland's remote St. Kilda archipelago was signed Wednesday, aimed at protecting the islands and the surrounding waters.

The plan's goals also include protecting the traces of human habitation on the islands, The Scotsman reported. St. Kilda, in the Outer Hebrides 41 miles west of the nearest island, Benbecula, was inhabited for several thousand years, but the last residents moved to the mainland in 1930 from Hirta, the largest island.

Those signing the management plan include the National Trust for Scotland, which owns the islands, two Scottish government agencies and the British Ministry of Defense. A radar station is located in the islands.

Kate Mavor, head of the National Trust, said the islands have a unique and fragile heritage that includes huge nesting colonies where about 5 percent of European seabirds rear their young, flowers and lichens surviving in tough conditions and including species unique to St. Kilda and the feral Soay sheep, "living relics of livestock from the Iron Age."

"It is for these reasons that St. Kilda is not only treasured by Scotland but by the world and we have a supreme obligation to conserve and protect it for all," she added.

UNESCO, the U.N. cultural agency, recognizes St. Kilda as a world heritage site for its natural environment, cultural history and marine environment.
