CEBU, Philippines - Taking advantage of the Philippines robust growth in tourism, Islands Group is rolling out its national expansion for its Islands Stay Hotel brand, starting with the opening of a Makati-based facility, as well as in Palawan.

Aldeguer targets to open up at least 300 value-chic, no-frills accommodations within Metro Cebu, as well as other parts of the country.

Tories call for end to regional health organizations

The Progressive Conservatives are writing a new prescription for Ontario's cash-strapped health care system, starting with a change in who's making decisions about how billions of dollars are spent across the province.

The province should abolish regional organizations that decide where the money goes locally and instead rely on 30 to 40 "community hubs" created from existing hospital corporations and staffed by volunteer boards, the Tories said Monday.

The 14 Local Health Integration Networks set up by the Liberals, as well as the Tory-created Community Care Access Centres, aren't working and haven't been able to hit most of their targets, said Opposition Leader Tim Hudak.

The province should get rid of them, along with 2,000 "middle managers," and use that money to hire more doctors and nurses, he said.

"The sad reality is, if you have a loved one who's in the health-care system, far too often you've got to fight like hell to get anything done," Hudak said.

"We're going to change that. And we're going to put patients not bureaucrats at the centre of our health-care system."

Heath care now consumes nearly half of every dollar spent by the government, which is facing a $15-billion deficit.

More money is being spent on health care, but the government isn't achieving the results for the money it's taking, Hudak said. His party's "bold new ideas" would put patients first, create jobs and help grow the economy.

"This is not about a new coat of paint on an old system," Hudak said. "It's fundamental reform to take out layers of bureaucracy, invest in patient care instead and bring decisions closer to the communities where people actually live."

The Tories also want to accelerate patient-centred funding where hospitals get money for every service they perform and reduce the size of the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care.

New Rochelle, NY, September 10, 2012-- Therapies for retinal diseases are expected to overtake those for glaucoma by 2014, reports Genetic Engineering & Biotechnology News (GEN). Because current retinal disease treatments only improve vision for six to eight weeks, there is a critical need for new remedies, according to a recent issue of GEN.

"As increasing numbers of baby-boomers continue to grow older, many will have to deal with eye diseases such as age-related macular degeneration," said John Sterling, Editor-in-Chief of GEN. "Some estimates put the current AMD and diabetic retinopathy drug segment of the market at $3 billion, and this is expected to increase to about $5 billion in two years."

Standard therapy has been Genentech's VEGF inhibitors Lucentis and the off-label use of Avastin. Regeneron, in collaboration with Bayer HealthCare, is challenging these drugs with a similar VEGF inhibitor, Eyela. The FDA approved the drug last November for wet AMD.

In another approach, Acucela is in Phase II trials using visual cycle modulators to lighten the metabolic load on the retina by reducing the activity of the rod visual system. This protects the retina from light damage, improves retinal vasculature, and reduces the accumulation of A2E and other retinal-related toxic by-products.

GlaxoSmithKline has two drugs in Phase II trials for ocular therapy: darapladib, an oral Lp-PLA2 inhibitor for diabetic macular edema, and Votrient, a multi-kinase angiogenesis inhibitor in eye drop form for AMD. Early-stage work also is under way for neovascular AMD, dry AMD, diabetic retinopathy, diabetic macula edema, uveitis, and glaucoma, as well as for technologies for drug delivery.

The Florence Freedom beat Gateway Monday night to advance to the team's first ever Frontier League championship series.

Peter Fatse drove in a career high six runs and Freedom starter Brad Allen threw eight shutout innings as the Freedom came from down two games to one, to win the series with back-to-back wins Sunday and Monday.

The five game championship series with Southern Illinois begins Wednesday in Florence. The Freedom had never played in the Frontier League playoffs until this season.

September 10, 2012 - Frontier League (FL) Florence Freedom Sauget, IL-The Florence Freedom are heading to their first ever Frontier League championship series after a 7-0 win over the Gateway Grizzlies Monday night. The Freedom won the best of five series three games to two.

Peter Fatse had a career high six RBI's and starter Brad Allen pitched eight shutout innings.

Fatse hit a three run homerun in the first inning to give the Freedom a 3-0 lead. He also had an RBI single in the fourth which made it 4-0. Fatse then in the seventh drilled a two run double to deep right center as the Freedom led 7-0.

Allen allowed three hits and struck out seven while walking four. He improved his scoreless innings streak to twenty one straight with his shutout performance. He also improved to 5-0 with a .47 ERA as a starter.

The Freedom pitching staff threw fourteen straight scoreless innings against Gateway which started in the fifth inning of game four and carried through the duration of game five.

Jim Jacquot also homered for the victorious Freedom. Fatse ended the game going 3-4 with 6 RBI's. David Harris and Pierre LePage also collected two hits.

The Freedom will now host the Southern Illinois Miners in game one of a best of five championship series starting Wednesday night. LHP David Harden(1-0,0.00) gets the start for the Miners while the Florence starter is TBA. The game can be heard with Steve Jarnicki starting at 6:20 on Real Talk 1160 and realtalk1160.com.

The Florence Freedom will play the decisive game tonight in the best-of-five Frontier Independent League playoffs in Sauget Ill.

The Freedom stayed alive by defeating the Gateway Grizzlies 7-5 on Sunday in dramatic fashion.

With the Freedom trailing by a run and down to its final out, first baseman Drew Rundle hit a three-run homer to tie the series at two and send the teams back to Sauget, near St. Louis, for the final game.

Right-hander Brad Allen (1-0, 0.00) will take the mound for the Freedom. The Grizzlies will counter with righty Tim Brown (1-0, 2.25).

The winner will play the fourth-seeded Southern Illinois Miners for the Frontier League Championship. The Miners swept the top-seeded Traverse City Beach Bums Saturday to advance to the finals.

The first pitch is set for 7:20 p.m. tonight. The game can be heard locally on Real Talk 1160 and realtalk1160.com.

A lot of people were taken aback recently when Cris Cyborg Santos manager said that he believed a Cyborg vs. Ronda Rousey bout would eventually take place, just not at 135 pounds.

It wasnt so much the rhetoric about the fight, but more so who it was saying those words. And that would be Tito Ortiz, who now claims Cyborg among his charges under his new management company, Primetime 360.

Ortizs career spans a time when fighters were lucky to be making in the four-figures for a fight to now, where it isnt uncommon for those at the top to actually bump up into seven-digit paydays.

He believes that he had a lot to do with progressing the sport to that point, but also has the experience of building up his brand and other business interests so that fighting wasnt the be-all, end-all to his life. Ortiz didnt necessarily have to make millions and millions of dollars from his fight career in order to sustain himself once he stepped out of the Octagon for the final time.

During my whole career, I made mistakes. I made positive and negative things to get me to where I am today. I want to go out and find the next generation fighters. Im really going to take this managing stuff by storm. I really want to battle for fighters for what they believe in and what I believe in, Ortiz told MMAWeekly.com about why he decided to start Primetime 360.

Ortiz has had representation over the years. In fact, current UFC president Dana White was once he and Chuck Liddells manager. But Ortiz wasnt a fighter that would lay his life in the hands of his representatives and just accept what was doled out to him.

The former UFC light heavyweight champion, as he says, took many missteps throughout his career, but thats because he was always involved, always taking an active hand in the direction of his career on the business end, not just in the gym and in the cage.

Thats why he believes he has something to offer todays fighters that sets him apart.

Ortiz doesnt intend to promise his fighters that stars and the moon if they sign on with him. He intends to promise them that if they are willing to put in the work, they will be successful, and perhaps more importantly, they will have a future beyond the short lifespan of a professional combat sports athlete.

I want to break the mold on fighters. Theyre going to do all the hard, diligent work to become superstars, said Ortiz. I think thats what it comes down to, where Im showing these guys the right things to do to make themselves a brand. Thats what its really about, a fight for the fighters, and thats what Ive been doing for myself for so long, making the right decisions and not making ones on pure emotions.

Scientists with a high tolerance for creepy-crawlies have figured out how to create and control cyborg cockroaches.

How would you like to see this scooting across your kitchen floor?

If Borg ships have vermin on them, they look exactly like a project researchers at North Carolina State University are working on.

These intrepid scientists have taken a lightweight chip with a wireless receiver and transmitter and attached it to a cockroach like a little backpack. For the record, large Madagascar hissing cockroaches are the roach of choice.

A microcontroller is connected to the roach's antennae and cerci (rear sensory organs). Small charges from the wires to the cerci trick the roach into moving in response to a perceived threat. Charges sent to the antennae make the roach think it's bumped into something. Between the two, you have a fairly sophisticated method of cockroach steering.

The researchers imagine using this cyborg cockroach technology to send the little beasties into tight spaces to search for survivors after disasters.

I imagine using this cyborg cockroach technology to scare the bejesus out of unsuspecting friends and for reenacting "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episodes with cockroach actors.

Despite Cyborg's insistence that her body is unable to cut enough weight to reach the 135-pound limit, Rousey continued throw public jabs at the suspended former featherweight champ on Monday's episode of The MMA Hour, criticizing her for flip-flopping on the weight issue and deriding her career as nothing more than a product of cheating and steroid abuse.

"If you can make 145 [pounds] while you're super juiced out, you can make 135 if you're clean," Rousey brashly declared.

"Cyborg has never had a fair fight. If you really look at it, she's had fights where she came in and outweighed the other girl by 12 pounds and then they still fought. This girl has a long history of cheating and using drugs, and coming in overweight, and no one's ever put their foot down ever about it.

"If we did a catchweight of 140, I 100 percent think she'd just come in overweight and be like, Whatever, come fight me.' Want to know why? Because she's done it several times before. She has a track record of doing these things. This girl does things that are blatantly disrespectful to her opponents, over and over and over her whole career. Someone needs to put their foot down about it. So, yeah, I'm going to be the one that has to do it because I can."

Cyborg has long expressed interest in fighting Rousey in the past, however recently she seems to have moved on from the feud. Following Rousey's lopsided victory over Sarah Kaufman and subsequent callout of the Brazilian, Cyborg posted a surprising rant on her Twitter account that perplexed even Strikeforce officials, stating that a drop to bantamweight was out of the question and she would be awaiting her release from Strikeforce, as her real division no longer existed.

Nonetheless, luring Cyborg into the potential superfight continues to be at the top of Rousey's agenda. Last month Rousey's manager, Darin Harvey, asked for the bout to be overseen by extreme and extensive drug testing, including hair follicle testing that could detect illegal substances up to three months after their original ingestion. Now, however, Rousey has backed off the request.

Listening to astronomy

Astronomy started out as a purely visual science, but with todays electronics and techniques, you can also hear astronomy. It used to be that you to take classes, or else had to be in the right place at the right time to hear a lecture on astronomy. But, thanks to the Internet, there are many resources for hearing astronomy online.

Of course, you can hear astronomy information right here on this website, via the 90-second EarthSky interviews. You can also hear 22 minutes of science and music each week from EarthSky on the EarthSky 22 podcast.

And there is AstronomyCast with Frasier Cain and Pamela Gay.

But what really got me to thinking about this was the Silicon Valley Astronomy Lectures, a series of audio podcasts by eminent astronomers, from the Astronomical Society of the Pacific. Among the lectures are Dr. Jeff Moore (NASA Ames Research Center): New Horizons at Jupiter (and Some Saturn News); Dr. David Morrison (NASA Ames Research Center): Taking a Hit: Asteroid Impacts and Evolution; Dr. Dana Backman (SETI Institute and Astronomical Society of the Pacific): A Ringside Seat to the Formation of Planets; and Dr. David Grinspoon (Denver Museum of Nature and Science): Comparing Worlds: Climate Catastrophes in the Solar System.

You may already be familiar with Science at NASA, and there are also podcasts from the main NASA site, as well as the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL).

Well, that was just a start. I did a little online searching and was amazed to find all the places you can hear astronomy. You might want to do a little searching for yourself. If the links above dont give you enough to listen to, here are a few more.

I also found the Astronomy Media Player, which is actually web page with links to a number of astronomy and space podcasts from around the world.

Fujitsu to build software robot to pass college entrance exams

Fujitsu said Monday it will lead a project to create artificial intelligence capable of passing the math portion of the entrance exams to one of Japan's top universities.

The company's research division said its goal is to make software by 2021 that can complete exactly the same math test that hopeful teenagers take when applying to Tokyo University, or "Todai," known for its grueling entrance requirements. The project will need to process text and formulas meant for human eyes, extract the math problems and convert them into a form meant for computers, and then solve the problems at the level of Japan's top high school students.

"Each of these steps still poses major theoretical and practical problems, and for each one, the solution will involve an appropriate combination of various technologies," Fujitsu said in a statement.

Sample questions from previous tests posted online show world problems that must be solved in consecutive stages, geometry problems that refer to drawn diagrams, and problems that require the application of specific equations memorized by test takers.

Currently, only about half of the problems on some such tests can be solved by computers alone, even using advanced algorithms, the company said. The exam problems will also have to be solved quickly and without mistakes.

A software robot that could pass university entrance tests would strike a major emotional chord in the country, where the tests are a major part of society. Most students attend cram schools for years to prepare for the tests, in addition to their normal schools, and often become full time cram-school students if they fail to get into the university of their choice. Sample problems are published in national newspapers each year, and TV stations cover the posting of results outside the buildings of top universities.

Fujitsu said it hopes to use technology developed in the project to create intelligent systems that are capable of performing advanced analysis on themselves, for self-optimization and similar tasks.

The electronics conglomerate will oversee the math portion of a larger project announced last year that aims to pass all subjects of the entrance exams at the university, called "Can a robot enter Todai?" The project is being run by the National Institute of Informatics, a publicly funded software research foundation.

Its stated goal is to create software capable of achieving a strong score on the tests by 2016, then get marks high enough to win entrance by 2021. It was founded as a way to unify the increasingly diverse areas of study in artificial intelligence.

Any robots that do wish to take the entrance exams should be careful, as calculators and other electronics are forbidden by the university.
