H.B. Fuller Announces Bulk Feed Capability and System Network Option for the Liquamelt® Adhesive System

ST. PAUL, Minn., Oct. 1, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- H.B. Fuller (FUL) announces two advances for the Liquamelt adhesive systema bulk feed option that eliminates the need for on-floor staff to refill the adhesive reservoir and a gateway I/O option that will allow the system's operation to be monitored by the packaging machine control system. "These new features, when combined with the potential energy savings, maintenance savings, safety and eco-advantages of the Liquamelt cool adhesive technology, present a compelling alternative to traditional hot melt adhesive sealing," said Dave Mancuso, business development manager/Liquamelt of H.B. Fuller.

(Photo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20121001/CG82797)

The bulk feed capability is accomplished by the delivery of Liquamelt adhesive in a large container that is replaced when emptied. Typically hot melt adhesive is dispensed from the hot tank of a conventional system or from a reservoir close to the hot melt system. The bulk delivery option allows containers to be located remotely and the Liquamelt adhesive to be safely transferred from the sealed containers to the packaging machines through common non-heated fluid hoses. As Liquamelt adhesive is supplied at room temperature and heated just prior to application by the Turboactivator technology located inside the packaging machine, heated transport hoses are not required. Three bulk container sizes are offered: 30 liter drum, 50 gallon drum, and 2,500 pound tote. These options maintain the Liquamelt system's cool on delivery hot on demand operating approach by easily delivering room temperature liquid adhesive from a variety of package options to the Liquamelt application equipment reservoir. Providing a closed, continuous fill operation is important in reducing waste, resulting in lower overall operating costs.

The gateway I/O option enables external communication and provides machine health status. It will allow monitoring of the Liquamelt adhesive system by the OEM equipment and ensure efficient and reliable line operation.

H.B. Fuller's Gen2 Liquamelt adhesive systems are currently under development and the company has scheduled a "Next Generation Brainstorming Event" to be held at Pack Expo 2012 to obtain user feedback and OEM input on new features and functionality of the system. The Liquamelt adhesive system debuted at Pack Expo Las Vegas 2011 as a- revolutionary alternative to hot melt sealing that delivers a up to a 50 percent improvement in mileage per pound and up to a 50 percent reduction or more in energy costs compared to traditional hot melt. Additional benefits include a non-petroleum formulation based on 40% sustainable raw materials, elimination of heated hoses and related safety concerns, and a formulation composition that helps ensure no char or adhesion to packaging machinery for clean operation and easy cleanup.

Ford fits in Focus app that lauds fuel-efficient driving

Published on 02 October 2012 Hits: 55

FORD has fitted its new Focusnow sold at the brands dealerships in the Philippineswith what it calls a handy software application thats aimed at helping coach customers in the art of eco-driving. The system rewards drivers with kudos displayed on a screen, and which include championship cup icons and playful titles such as Advanced ECO driver or the ECO champion top prize.

Called EcoMode, the system generates a personalized driver operation scorecard by monitoring engine rpm, vehicle speed, accelerator position, clutch position, selected gear and engine temperature. The variables are related to the drivers gear-shifting habits, anticipation and speed.

Drivers can review their generated score against the softwares optimized patterns through a five-leaf icon, with two leaves set as the default and five leaves being the maximum score. The scoring system gives hints on how to gain more leaves through advices like Smooth driving saves fuel or Early shifting saves fuel.

The foot of the driver has one of the biggest impacts on real-world fuel economy of a vehicle and was the starting point for the development of EcoMode, said Thomas Schick, an engineer with the Ford of Germany Core Vehicle Integration team who helped design the software. Trying to reach the maximum score while in EcoMode leads to a driving style that is optimized for fuel economy.

Cyborg Talks Future, Ronda Rousey and More

As her one year suspension comes to an end, Cris Cyborg Santos, the fallen star of womens MMA, is becoming increasingly vocal about her desires to get back into the cage and face reigning Strikeforce bantamweight champ, Ronda Rousey.

In an interview with Nocaute Transamerica, Santos talked of her desire to fight Rousey:

I also want [the Rousey] fight, Im very pumped. Its gonna be very exciting, all the fans want to see it. I believe it will happen. I think Dana will make everything its possible, cause this is the fight that everybody wants to see.

Santos was the reigning Strikeforce womens featherweight champion until she was stripped of that title in December last year after she tested positive for banned steroid stanozolol.

Until that point, she was the undisputed queen of womens MMA, but during the past year of her suspension, Rouseywith her charismatic media swagger and unbeatable arm-barhas emphatically snatched that crown.

Having cleaned out the bantamweight division, Rousey has turned her attention to Cyborg and has pulled no punches in her trash talk trying to set-up the fight.

In recent interviews she has called the Brazilian Guyborg and Cyroid (H/T Bloody Elbow) and has said that all her accomplishments are illegitimate due to a career of steroid abuse

Rousey has also insisted that the only way shed fight the former champ is if she cuts down to 135 lbs to meet her at her weight class.

If she wants to fight me than she is going to have to find a way to come down to 135, said Rousey back in August.

We'll see how she does in a fair fight for once in her life. She has a history of coming in overweight to fights and I wouldn't doubt that if we agreed to some sort of catchweight at 140, she'd show up at 145 anyway and be like 'ah whatever, fight or not.

Eroded beaches to share dredged New Pass sand

Published: Monday, October 1, 2012 at 11:46 p.m. Last Modified: Monday, October 1, 2012 at 11:46 p.m.

SARASOTA COUNTY - In an effort to meet the regional beach management and renourishment needs of the barrier islands, government officials are planning to work together to relocate the sand from New Pass Inlet to eroded beaches on Lido beach and Longboat Key.

Coordinating regional beach needs could result in millions of dollars saved for the county, those officials said.

The plan was discussed at a joint meeting Monday between Sarasota County commissioners and Town of Longboat Key commissioners.

While precise numbers were not disclosed, commissioners agreed that the sand share would be cost efficient for every local government involved.

"There are a lot of opportunities for great savings if we coordinate regional efforts," Sarasota County coastal resource manager Laird Wreford said. "We can satisfy the sand need at Lido beach as well as provide the management needed at the New Pass Inlet."

By combining efforts the local governments could save at least $4 million, he said.

New Pass is a channel that is routinely dredged by the Army Corps, and officials plan to distribute the sand from the next dredge to area beaches.

Lido beach, which is currently under a federally authorized beach nourishment project, has been searching for sand 15 miles offshore, which has resulted in extra expenses. Longboat Key Mayor Jim Brown said that sand is imported from the Tampa area for their needs.

Rather than look at the New Pass Inlet management project and beach nourishment project separately, commissioners said it would be better to unite the projects.

Astronomy professor looks to the stars

Cosmic Castaways, a planetarium show created and produced at Youngstown State University, was first released in May, but John Feldmeier, an associate professor of physics and astronomy, is already raising money for another film.

On Thursday, Feldmeier and his colleagues will play host to past donors, including faculty; staff; supporters of the YSU College of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics; and local amateur astronomers.

The event consists of a reception in Maag Library, followed by speeches and a prescreening of Cosmic Castaways in the Ward Beecher Hall planetarium before the films official release on Friday.

Cosmic Castaways focuses on research by YSU astronomy professors on stars between galaxies; it was a national collaboration between YSU, Case Western Reserve University and Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.

Curtis Spivey and Annie Wilson, who both work in the planetarium, edited and improved the show. Feldmeier said about one-third of the show is new or improved from the original rough draft.

There were some scenes that we just kind of used as a placeholder, Spivey said.

They made the scenes more stunning and internally consistent, and also improved opening and closing scenes.

The fundraiser will be accented by a new lighting system in the YSU planetarium.

All the money raised will be used to fund the next planetarium show Feldmeier and his team hope to create.

The team who worked on Cosmic Castaways is tossing around three ideas for the next show. They are considering producing a show about asteroids, distant galaxies or John Wheeler, a world-renowned physicist who hailed from Youngstown and coined the term black hole.

TITANIUM 2012 Aerospace Materials & Processes Represented by Boeing, Dassault …

October 2, 2012 - TITANIUM 2012 will include Aerospace Materials and Processes speaker panel, which will examine titanium manufacturing techniques and alloy selection, both of which are critical for aerospace applications. Titanium Metals Corp.will sponsor panel, which will be moderated by Dr. Yoji Kosaka, senior manager, U.S. research, at TIMET's Henderson Technical Laboratory.Speakers will include representatives from Boeing, Dassault Aviation of France, Rolls Royce, Honeywell Aerospace, and Northrop Grumman. International Titanium Association 2655 W. Midway Blvd. Broomfield, CO, 80020 USA

Press release date: September 25, 2012

DENVER -- Aerospace Materials and Processes, a speaker panel at TITANIUM 2012, the 28th annual conference and exhibition, hosted and organized by the International Titanium Association (ITA), will examine titanium manufacturing techniques and alloy selection, both of which are critical for demanding aerospace applications. Titanium Metals Corp. (TIMET), Dallas, will sponsor the panel, which will be moderated by Dr. Yoji Kosaka, senior manager, U.S. research, at TIMET's Henderson Technical Laboratory, Henderson NV.

A paper by Dr. Daniel G. Sanders, senior technical fellow, Boeing Research and Technology for Chicago-based Boeing Co., will examine promising new titanium alloys and production methods now under development at Boeing, which may offer advantages over the existing alloy options. With the recent launch of the Boeing's 787 jetliner as a backdrop to his remarks, Sanders will note the ongoing interest in novel titanium alloys, as they are compatible with composite materials because of their similar galvanic properties and coefficient of thermal expansion.

Matthieu Pachoutinsky, metallic material and processes engineer at Dassault Aviation of France, will provide an overview of titanium applications in Dassault airframes. He will focus on structures using forged cast parts, superplastic forming and diffusion bonding. "Whereas landing gear or engines manufacturers take the benefit of the wide range and high quality of material manufacturer's portfolio, Dassault chooses mainly the Ti-6-4 workhorse," Pachoutinsky stated in a preview of his remarks. "This allows us to rationalize our sources and to minimize qualification costs. Though our material portfolio is narrow, we can target a large range of structural parts, with appropriate optimized processes."

Dr. Michael Glavicic, senior materials engineer for international aerospace engine manufacturer Rolls Royce, will review a summary of the progress achieved in the company's "Advanced Titanium Microstructure Modeling" program, which is funded under the Metals Affordability Initiative (MAI). Glavicic states the goal of this program is to develop computational models that predict location specific microstructure and mechanical properties for wrought titanium alloys through the integration of phase field, crystal plasticity, variant selection, thermodynamic and neural net models into the commercially available finite-element software DEFORM, supported by Scientific Forming Technologies Corp., Columbus, OH.

Dr. Daira Legzdina, principal product design engineer at Phoenix-based Honeywell Aerospace, will present "Additive Manufacturing of Titanium Alloys". Additive manufacturing is a layer-by-layer technique of producing three-dimensional objects directly from a digital model without the need for hard tooling. Legzdina will spotlight three technologies are being considered for the production of titanium parts: Direct Laser Metal Sintering (DMLS); Electron Beam Melting (EBM); and Ion Fusion Formation (IFF). Legzdina's presentation will review the various technologies and discuss titanium alloy applications at Honeywell Aerospace. Additive manufacturing, according to Legzdina, has the potential for major cost savings in the aerospace industry, offering the ability to produce prototypes quickly and inexpensively, ability to produce end of life parts where tooling is no longer available.

Eric J. Fodran, Ph.D., materials and process engineer, Northrop Grumman, Advanced Materials and Processes, Falls Church, VA will discuss Electron Beam (E-Beam) metallic Additive Manufacturing (AM) of Ti-6Al-4V alloy providing a unique opportunity to meet the demands of accelerating production needs by supplying a rapid, cost-effective means of fabricating metallic components that are otherwise cycle time intensive and costly to fabricate.

It's not too late to register for TITANIUM 2012 in Atlanta October 7-10(th). Visit http://www.titanium.org for Registration.

Nutrition North program in full effect

The Nutrition North Canada program comes into full effect today.

The program was rolled out slowly to make for a smooth transition from the old food mail program.

As of today, many non-perishable items like canned soups, canned vegetables and dry rice and pasta are no longer subsidized.

Retailers have been preparing for today's deadline for months, so prices won't jump instantly.

The North West Company owns and operates many grocery stores in Nunavut and the N.W.T. It has already secured an extra two months' supply of those non-perishables by sealift to Nunavut.

Michael McMullen, the companys vice president of northern retail, said the company has also cut down on the number of brands it carries to make room for the larger sealift order instead of building a new warehouse.

We would rather be more efficient with the resources we have available than invest money needlessly and be in a position of having to pass on those costs of construction to the customer, said McMullen.

McMullen said if prices do increase, it wouldn't be until late spring or early summer.

"It's not October 1 so much that we worry about. It's more as the sealift supply dwindles, it's more did we gauge the customer demand correctly."

Shoppers will have to wait until mid-2013 to see any potential impact on prices.

The Center for Productive Longevity Announces Winners of the Nationwide Later-Life Story Contest

BOULDER, CO--(Marketwire - Oct 1, 2012) - The Center for Productive Longevity (CPL) is pleased to announce the winners of its Later-Life Story Contest, which was created to demonstrate that older people can continue to lead successful and inspirational lives. Barbara M. Traynor was chosen for the Inspirational Life Story category and Lynn Brooks for her Entrepreneurship Success Story. Both entries are available to read online at http://www.ctrpl.org/later-life-story-contest-winners. A panel of three independent judges selected the winners from many fascinating stories sent in by people 50 and older. Lynn and Barbara will each receive a prize of $1,000 and a specially designed display trophy.

In Lynn Brooks' winning essay, she wrote about beginning an organization in 1992 at age 59 called Big Apple Greeter in New York City. It is a non-profit that pairs visitors to NYC with volunteer greeters who explore the city together. This was the first "Welcome Visitor" program of its kind in the country. Today, the organization is extremely successful, but it was a challenging journey along the way. Lacking funding, support and computer skills, but holding onto a will to succeed, Lynn overcame many challenges.

Her story describes how far the organization has come. "Today we have more than 300 Greeters -- most are over 55, more than 50% work, many are multilingual, some are blind or use wheelchairs. They are ready, rain or shine, to spend two to four hours with visitors, showing them our people, culture and diversity."

Lynn also shared wonderful metrics. "In terms of success, our cup runneth over. We've had more than 120,000 visitors since we started. We've generated over two billion positive, world-wide media impressions about New York City. Ninety-five percent of our visitors give us 'extraordinary' evaluations. Our volunteer retention rate is incredibly high. We've been called the most cost-effective public relations arm in the city. We've been widely recognized, starting in our early years, with awards that run the gamut from corporations to city government, and in January we will receive the prestigious 2012 Hotel Excellence Lifetime Achievement Award." Barbara M. Traynor's story begins with a situation that sounds familiar to many people. Yet she took some giant leaps of faith to change her life forever.

"Walking provides impetus to ponder. My 65th birthday was hovering. I was not feeling old, but sixty-five? That's major! Why I chose to walk the beach on a frigid winter afternoon is questionable, however with boots crunching on the frozen sand, gloved hands balled into my pockets, I reviewed my six-odd decades. Married at nineteen, three children by twenty-seven, moved eighteen times with a grass-is-greener spouse -- instant on-the-job-training in how to deal with transition -- and divorced after seventeen years.

"Working as an administrative assistant for over forty-five years, single mother raising three children, generated an abundant desire for freedom and travel but little savings and no pension. Life was crammed with drama and trauma. Income matched outgo. I would have to live on Social Security income alone. I screamed into the thundering surf, 'How can I afford to go anywhere? When is it my turn?' Surprise! Someone was listening.

"Arriving home, I checked my email. A message from Alaska cajoled: How about becoming a long-distance, long-term volunteer? Hmmmm -- it seemed that some organizations supplement their staff with volunteers, offering free room and board in exchange for workplace skills? WOW! That I could spend my over 65 'mystery' years this way inspired my imagination. My frozen fingers tingled. I began to rethink retirement."

At age 65, Barbara retired and drove to Alaska from Connecticut with a mission and copious notes about sites to visit along the way. The journey to be a volunteer exploded into becoming a journalist, author and speaker as well. CPL will also select a variety of other inspirational and touching entries to post on its website.
