Ball Aerospace OMPS Instrument Delivers 2012 Ozone Measurements

BOULDER, Colo., Oct. 24, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp.'s Ozone and Mapping Profiler Suite (OMPS) has made its first ozone measurements of the Antarctic ozone hole since launching aboard NASA's Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (NPP) satellite on Oct. 28, 2011.

(Photo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20121024/LA98688)

According to NASA and NOAA, the 2012 satellite measurement map of the Antarctic ozone hole shows that it is the second-smallest in 20 years since it appeared in the early 1980s.This is the first year Ball's OMPS instrument is providing the ozone data, continuing a satellite record dating from the early 1970s.

Under contract to NASA, Ball Aerospace designed and built OMPS and the Suomi NPP satellite, and integrated all five of the satellite's instruments. Suomi NPP orbits Earth every 102 minutes, and to date has completed 5,000 orbits capturing data from the Earth's land, oceans and atmosphere. Currently Ball is building Suomi NPP's successor, the Joint Polar Satellite System-1 (JPSS-1) satellite and its OMPS instrument, to maintain continuity of weather and environmental observations into the 2030s by providing a daily map of the entire globe's ozone.

"Science and society are greatly benefitting from the successful delivery of data from the new set of instruments aboard Suomi NPP as it prepares our nation for the next-generation of polar-orbiting weather satellites," said David L. Taylor, Ball Aerospace president and CEO. "Suomi NPP and JPSS-1 allow more accurate global environmental predictions and improve weather forecasts for millions of people."

Ball's OMPS instrument measures atmospheric ozone and how ozone concentration varies with altitude. The three-part instrument includes a nadir profiler, to help scientists better understand ozone destruction in the middle and upper stratosphere; a limb profiler, to discern lower stratospheric ozone variations; and a nadir mapper to analyze daily global total ozone maps. Ball's OMPS is based on its previous instrument, the Solar Backscatter Ultraviolet instrument (SBUV/2).

This year's Antarctic ozone hole size reduction is attributed to warmer conditions over that continent. The average size of the 2012 ozone hole was 6.9 million square miles, compared to 11.5 million square miles in 2000. Even though it is smaller than in years past, the ozone layer above Antarctica is not expected to return to its early 1980s state until about 2065. The NASA/NOAA collection of ozone data contributes to fulfilling the monitoring requirements of the Montreal Protocol, a 1989 international treaty.

Aerospace industry raises funds for Habitat home

Bay Area-Houston and Habitat for Humanity held its second annual Aerospace Games last week.

Ten companies participated in the event along with volunteers from the community to raise funds to build a home for a family in need.

Aerospace Project Build was created by companies within the aerospace industry to take part in the funding of Habitat homes throughout the Bay Area and other surrounding cities.

The companies represented teams that participated in a variety of round robin events with the winning team designated to raise the walls at a Habitat home.

This year, that honor will go to the employees at UTC Aerospace Systems, who raised $7,000 from their own volunteer fundraising efforts.

Each team that participated at last weeks event will spend every weekend throughout the building process of a new Habitat home.

United Space Alliance, Boeing, NASA, Bastion Technologies and JSC Federal Credit Union were just a few of the companies participating in this years games.

Organizers set their goal at increasing the participation and money raise, said Rachel Ward, resource development coordinator for Bay Area Habitat for Humanity-Houston.

This years Aerospace Games raised between 45-$50,000 compared to last years $30,000.

Our goal was to increase the event by 50 percent and we were able to do that exactly financially and by the number of people that participate, said Ward.

B/E Aerospace Reports Third Quarter 2012 Financial Results; EPS $0.74 Excluding Debt Prepayment Costs; Raises 2012 …

WELLINGTON, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

B/E Aerospace, Inc. (BEAV), the worlds leading manufacturer of aircraft cabin interior products and the worlds leading distributor of aerospace fasteners and consumables, today announced third quarter 2012 financial results.

THIRD QUARTER 2012 HIGHLIGHTS VERSUS THIRD QUARTER PRIOR YEAR

THIRD QUARTER CONSOLIDATED RESULTS

Third quarter 2012 revenues of $766.7 million increased $130.7 million, or 20.6 percent, as compared with the same period of the prior year. Organic revenue growth, excluding 2012 acquisitions, was 10.5 percent.

Operating earnings, adjusted to exclude $4.6 million of AIT costs, were $138.9 million, an increase of 23.9 percent, and operating margin of 18.1 percent increased 50 basis points as compared to the prior year period. The growth in operating earnings and the improvement in operating margin occurred primarily as a result of operating leverage at the higher sales volume and ongoing operational efficiency initiatives. Operating earnings, on a GAAP basis to include AIT costs, were $134.3 million or 17.5 percent of sales.

Net earnings and earnings per diluted share, adjusted to exclude both one-time debt prepayment costs and AIT costs, were $79.2 million and $0.77 per diluted share, increases of 21.1 percent and 20.3 percent, respectively, as compared to the prior year period. Net earnings and net earnings per diluted share, adjusted to exclude the one-time debt prepayment costs, were $76.0 million and $0.74 per diluted share.

Commenting on the Companys third quarter 2012 performance, Amin J. Khoury, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of B/E Aerospace said, Our revenue growth continues to be driven primarily by the robust new aircraft delivery cycle. Approximately 61 percent of third quarter revenues were driven by demand for products for new-buy aircraft reflecting both robust new aircraft deliveries and weaker aftermarket demand. In addition, as a result of our operational outperformance which has resulted in record operating earnings for the nine-month year-to-date period, and successfully executed tax planning initiatives we have been able to raise our 2012 earnings guidance to $2.82 per share. The $2.82 per share guidance represents a $0.17 per share increase as compared to our original guidance of $2.65 per share.

For 2013, we are expecting top line growth of approximately 10 percent driven primarily by the demand for our products for new-buy aircraft. Our initial 2013 guidance of approximately 10 percent revenue growth and approximately 20 percent earnings per share growth is based primarily on our high quality backlog and the expectation of strong wide-body deliveries that are expected to continue for the next several years. We believe we are well positioned to generate double-digit revenue growth for the next several years, based on our total backlog of $8.25 billion, both booked and awarded but unbooked, rapidly growing revenues from our supplier furnished equipment (SFE) program deliveries, our expectation for a 14 percent CAGR in wide-body aircraft deliveries over the next three years, the expectation for continued growth in global passenger travel, and the attendant increases in capacity.

Parker Aerospace’s Advanced Flight Controls Certified on Gulfstream G650 Business Jet

IRVINE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

The fly-by-wire actuation system developed by Parker Aerospace, a business segment of Parker Hannifin Corporation (PH), the global leader in motion and control technologies, has been certified as part of the type certificate Gulfstream received from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for its Gulfstream G650 business jet.

Gulfstream Aerospace Corporations ultra-large-cabin, ultra-long-range G650 received FAA certification on September 7, 2012. Gulfstream and the Parker Aerospace Control Systems Division have been working together since the program's launch to design and certify the G650s fully digital, fly-by-wire flight control system, which includes the worlds first three-axis business aircraft electric backup hydrostatic actuation (EBHA) subsystem.

EBHAs are electrically controlled actuators that are primarily hydraulically powered by one of the G650s two hydraulic systems, with electric power as a backup. The EBHA subsystem is self-contained, operating in the event of certain failure conditions, essentially eliminating the need for a third hydraulic system found in traditional aircraft system architectures. These actuators provide enhanced aircraft safety and flight control availability because of the different power sources.

Parker provides EBHAs for all the G650s primary control surfaces, including the elevator, rudder, aileron, and outboard multi-function spoiler. In addition, Parker provides electrohydraulic servoactuators (EHSAs) for all of the G650s primary control surfaces as well as remote electronics units, motor control electronics, and tubing assemblies. The flight control actuators are manufactured at the Parker Aerospace Control Systems Division facility in Ogden, Utah, with the electronics manufactured at the divisions headquarters in Irvine, California.

The G650s fly-by-wire flight control system delivers many benefits, including flight-envelope protection, passenger comfort, increased redundancy, and reduced maintenance. As noted by Gulfstream in a recent statement, the system is the result of extensive testing, leading to a redundant fly-by-wire system that exceeds certification requirements.

Parker Aerospace helped make business aviation history when the G650 completed flight with EBHA mode on December 21, 2010. It became the first business aircraft to control flight using an electrically powered, fly-by-wire, EBHA backup flight control actuation system.

Parker is thrilled to have its components on the now-certified Gulfstream G650, said Parker Aerospace Vice President of Operations Greg Crowe. We are proud to be a part of this game-changing aircraft and showing what our advanced, fly-by-wire flight controls can achieve.

When flight with EBHA mode was completed, Gulfstream Senior Vice President of Programs, Engineering, and Test Pres Henne said, "The system performed flawlessly. There was no difference in handling qualities between the electrically and hydraulically powered modes.

About Parker Aerospace. Parker Aerospace is a global leader in the research, design, manufacture, and service of flight control, hydraulic, fuel and inerting, fluid conveyance, thermal management, and engine systems and components for aerospace and other high-technology markets. It is an operating segment of Parker Hannifin Corporation.

Micropapillary Carcinoma of the Breast

http://www.OncoPathology.info.

-Micropapillary breast carcinoma (or invasive micropapillary carcinoma IMPC) is a type of otherwise ‘typical’ invasive ductal carcinoma which exhibits a unique and characteristic growth pattern.

-Invasive micropapillary breast carcinoma is a very aggressive form of breast cancer, with a very high rate of lymph node metastasis.(The rate of lymph node involvement is estimated at between 75% and 100%).
-Skin invovlement (skin retraction) is another occassional feature of invasive micropapillary carcinoma of the breast, and is observed in about 20-23% of all cases.
Histological aspects of invasive micropapillary carcinoma of the breast
Histologically, invasive micropapillary breast carcinoma is characterized by:
-Clusters of cohesive tumor cells within quite prominent ‘clear spaces’, which resemble dilated angiolymphatic vessels.
-The nuclei of tumor cells around the periphery can often bulge with a kind of ‘knobby’ appearance.
- It is also quite common to see lymphatic involvement with invasive micropapillary breast cancers.

The aggressiveness of invasive micropapillary carcinoma may be related to the inverse polarity of the tumor cell clusters and lymphotropism
-Invasive micropapillary breast carcinoma tumors will often show lymphocytic infiltration.
-They tend to accumlate in the breast stroma, often forming a lymphoid follicle. The presence of lymphocytes within the tumor will tend to suggest a more aggressive cancer; more likely to metastize to the lymph nodes.
-Invasive micropapillary breast cancer is also characterized histologically by an ‘inverse polarity’ of the tumor cell clusters. To clarify, within the breast the ‘functional unit’ of the breast duct wall is a ‘polar’ double-layered tube consisting of luminal epithelial cells surrounded by myoepithelial cells and a basement membrane. In other words, there is an order; an asymmetrical organization from ‘outer to inner’, and without this polarity, the breast ducts would not able to properly excrete and transport breast milk. But with micropapillary breast carcinoma (and some other breast cancers) this polarity is reversed. The clusters of malignant cells which formed have the myoepithelial cells outside of the epithelial-derived cells, with the basal layer exposed.
Hormone receptor status is high for micropapillary breast cancer, somewhat against the norm
-Breast cancers which have higher positive rates for various hormone receptors are usually considered to have a more positive outlook. For one thing, they tend to be more responsive to chemotherapy.
-With invasive micropapillary breast cancers, about 70% tend to be ER positive and around 60% are positive for progesterone receptors. HER2 overexpression may be anticipated in approximately 40% of cases.
-For most breast cancers this degree of positive hormone receptivity would be a hopeful indicator.
-In invasive micropapillary breast carcinoma, however, hormone receptor status appears to have no particular significance to the outlook.
Factors most likely to affect the prognosis of invasive micropapillary breast cancer
-The mortality rate for micropapillary breast cancer is unfortunately quite high, at over 40%.
-The average interval between full presentation of the disease and death is about 3 years. -The factors which seem most likely to affect a poor prognosis are skin involvement, and nodal status.
-However, once lymph node metastasis is confirmed, the outlook for invasive micropapillary breast cancer does not differ significantly from other breast cancers which have metastized to the lymph nodes.
-Skin invasion is a signficant predictor of a poor prognosis with invasive micropapillary breast cancer, leading to mortality in about 50% of all cases in which it occurs.
-Aspects of the tumor which are most likely to influence the risk of metastasis are the histologic grade (based on the number of atypical cells and the rate of mitosis), lymphocyte infiltration, and lymphatic vessel density.
Treatment for invasive micropapillary carcinoma of the breast
-Invasive micropapillary breast carcinoma is a highly aggressive from of breast cancer which requires the earliest possible diagnosis and aggressive intervention and management.
-The high rate of local recurrence and high probability of lymph node metastasis will usually prompt the surgeon to suggest either a modified or full radical mastectomy, though breast conserving surgery is attempted in a minority of situations.
- Axillary dissection will usually accompany a modified or radical mastectomy.
-Adjuvant treatment with chemotherapy is often utilized as well, but usually only if there is evidence of axillary node metastasis, or when there is not yet lymph node metastasis but the tumor is larger than 1 cm.
