Sandy leaves St. Lucie County beaches less sandy

ST. LUCIE COUNTY Beaches on both North and South Hutchinson Islands experienced significant erosion from Hurricane Sandy over the weekend, county officials said Monday.

A beach renourishment project at Fort Pierce Beach, conducted last spring by the county, state and Army Corps of Engineers, "held up very nicely," however, according to County Coastal Engineer Richard Bouchard. One of the main benefits of such beach projects is to prevent storm damage, Bouchard said.

Bouchard said he checked South Hutchinson Island beaches Monday morning, but didn't know exactly how much sand had eroded because he's not out there on a daily basis. Bouchard said he would have to take surveys before and after storms to calculate the loss.

Sand washed over dunes in the southern part of the county, where officials are preparing to conduct another beach project, Bouchard said. Some sand also washed into county parking lots at Walton Rocks Beach and Normandy Beach.

5 free things: Honolulu attractions offer plenty of bargains beyond beaches

HONOLULU, Hawaii - Airfare, hotels, guided tours and pricey luaus a Hawaii vacation can add up, especially now that hotel room prices are back on the rise.

But walk past the expensive hotels in Waikiki, the tourist epicenter of Honolulu, and the greatest attraction of all awaits, for free: the beach.

With miles of coastline in Oahu, there's certain to be a sand, sea and surf spot to your liking.

But if that's not enough, there are plenty of other great things to see and do without spending a dime. Here are five:

ROYAL HAWAIIAN BAND

This 32-member band including three tuba players, a steel guitarist and a bassoonist dates back to the days the monarchy ruled Hawaii. The band was founded in 1836 by King Kamehameha III, and now runs as its own municipal agency. Today, it plays free concerts around Hawaii, with a standing date every Friday at noon at Iolani Palace near downtown.

ROYAL HAWAIIAN Centre

Stamford beaches sustain millions in damages

STAMFORD -- Mayor Michael Pavia and Director of Operations Ernie Orgera stood on the shattered slabs of West Beach's parking lot Thursday and looked down at a broken park bench.

The wooden resting spot was submerged in sand and missing one of its metal armrests. A small rectangular plaque indicated the bench had been donated to the city in memory of Bill Mancusi.

"We have to save this," Orgera said. "People pay a lot of money to dedicate these to their loved ones."

The bench was one of many destroyed by Hurricane Sandy Monday. Stamford's shoreline felt the full force of the storm, which snapped trees, scattered debris and uprooted cement-secured picnic tables as if they were candles plucked from a birthday cake.

"We just replaced this sidewalk," Orgera said as he looked at West Beach's walkway, which rested atop the sand in broken sections.

The hurricane's powerful winds also pushed sand under the beach's parking lot, causing the concrete to lift and separate as if split by an earthquake. Fragments from a broken deck, likely ripped from a home across the water, were strewn across the parking lot. Half of a green canoe floated in a puddle near the bathrooms.

The damage at Cove Island Park was so extensive Orgera said he fears the beaches may not open on time next year. The hurricane's winds pushed the sand off the beach and into the field, exposing the shore's clay basin and burying picnic benches in 3 feet of sand.

The building housing the lifeguard station and changing rooms at Quigley Beach was knocked off its foundation and will need to be condemned. A toilet and broken sink sat in a sand dune near the flag pole.

"This is going to cost several million dollars to repair," Orgera said. "I can't figure out what we're going to have to do to get the beaches open by spring."

The damage is far worse than what the city saw last year during Tropical Storm Irene, Pavia said. Stamford recently received the last of its Federal Emergency Management Agency reimbursements from that storm, which totaled about $1.1 million. The mayor said he expects Stamford will again see federal assistance after Hurricane Sandy.

The lesser-known beaches of Malaysia

By Mila Gilmanova

A TROPICAL holiday is not complete without sandy beaches, the deep blue sea and palm trees. Sun, sea and sand these are some of the simple components of a great holiday.

Malaysia is famous for its beaches and most of them are known all over the world: Pulau Tioman, (Pahang), Pulau Langkawi, Turtle Beach and Golden Beach in Similajau National Park These places are visited by thousands of tourists every year. However, for those who want to get off the beaten track there are some excellent lesser-known beaches in Malaysia most of which are to be found on the Malay Peninsula and the islands nearby. These destinations have a number of advantages: lower prices, less people, untouched nature and countless small beaches that you can almost call your own.

Terengganu is a magic place for sunbathing. Pic: HooLengSiong, Flickr.

In Terengganu state the Perhentian Islandsinvite visitors to a real beach paradise. The islands are called Perhentian Besar(Big Perhentian) andPerhentian Kecil(Small Perhentian). This is a protected area so fishing and collecting coral are prohibited. However, the snorkelling and diving is amazing. There are many great spots for diving and canoeing, and banana boat riding is also available. Also, the beaches have all the facilities: sun shelters, bar and cafes with fresh juice, fish and meat barbeques and very friendly staff.

Pangkorisland has beaches with nice white sand, coral reefs, and many amazing places for diving and snorkeling. The island is within an easy drive from Kuala Lumpur and has great accommodation options. Here you can find big hotels and kelongs; the choice is up to you. If you feel bored of the beach, then you can go sightseeing to the Dutch fort, visit some fishing villages, Fu Lin Kong Temple, Kali Amman Temple, Pangkor Town or even the neighboring island of Redang, which is famous among divers for its coral reef. Getting here is easy by ferry, which is RM5per person and departs hourly.

Diving is a very popular and well developed beach activity in Malaysia. Pic: No Dust, Flickr.

Pantai Cahaya Bulan,Pantai Bisikan Bayu, Pantai Tok in Kelantan provides great opportunities to discover the local Malaysian culture. Pantai Cahaya Bulan (Moonlight Beach) stretches about 1.2km and is very popular with locals on weekends. Tok Bali is surrounded by azure waters where you can see illuminated fishermens boats at night, while Bisikan Bayu has giant trees which look like they are something out of a fairytale. The coastline of the country is undeveloped and the visitors can find a number of wild idyllic beaches here. In the national park of Taman Negara one can see the oldest rainforest on the Earth. Kelantan is famous for its handicrafts, such as kite making, batik, silverware, songket (silk cloth woven with gold or silver threads) and woodcarving. Its a good spot for shopping and relaxation.

Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park also offers some amazing beaches. The park is home to islands like Pulau Gaya, Pulau Sapi, Pulau Manukan, Pulau Mamutik and Pulau Sulug. Getting here from the city Kota Kinabalu takes just 15-20 minutes by boat. All five islands have shallow waters, amazing white sandy beaches and coral gardens with a great variety of marine life. The biggest island Pulau Gaya is covered by dense jungle forest where the locals live in houses built along the coastline. Visitors of Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park have a chance to imagine how the first Europeans felt in the rainforests of Malaysia while hiking on 20km long tracks. At the same time the island has modern facilities and good accommodation. The beach located in Police Bay is the best on the island. Its a 400m long line of fine white sand with shallow crystal sea that is perfect for swimming.

ASSA’s contribution to Bloemfontein’s Two Observatories’ Project – Video

ASSA #39;s contribution to Bloemfontein #39;s Two Observatories #39; Project
Presented by HJ van Heerden at the ASSA Symposium, 2012 October 13, at SAAO in Cape Town. "Bloemfontein #39;s Two Observatories Project was launched in 2011 by the Physics Department at the UFS in close collaboration with ASSA Bloemfontein and the Free State Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (DETEA). The aim of the project is to preserve Bloemfontein #39;s two observatories, namely, the Boyden Observatory and the Lamont Hussey Observatory, and to develop these facilities for academic, public and educational use. The last 20 years have seen a rapid revival of astronomy in Bloemfontein. Boyden Observatory was upgraded in several different phases, and included the refurbishment of the Boyden 60-inch telescope. An active astrophysics research group was established at the UFS. At this time, a long-held dream to establish a planetarium in Bloemfontein is about to be fulfilled at the old observatory on Naval Hill. This talk will outline the involvement of ASSA in public and educational events including astronomy fairs and other outreach events, renovation and improvements of old telescopes, and finally, in historical research." Astronaissance: Communicating Astronomy and Space to the African Imagination – Video

Astronaissance: Communicating Astronomy and Space to the African Imagination
Presented by Keith Gottschalk at the ASSA Symposium, 2012 October 13, at SAAO in Cape Town. "Astronaissance neatly conceptualizes the crossover between the African Renaissance, the revival of Astronomy in Africa, and the rise of Astronautics and cognate space sciences . Story-telling, painting, engraving, writing, and above all, viewing the heavens above, have always been amongst the strategies for communicating this excitement and wonder. Today the Internet, learned societies, media, and public outreach projects are crucial when, for the first time ever, a majority of Africa #39;s people now live under the light-polluted skies of our continent #39;s towns and cities. Space-related products and services are woven into the fabric of our daily life as never before. Policy-makers and allocators of resources need to see as essential to their strategy communicating to Africa #39;s citizens, voters, and taxpayers, the necessity of Astronomy, Astronautics, and the other space sciences."
