New Documentary by Veronica Grey Explores Floating Garbage Islands

LOS ANGELES, CA--(Marketwire - Nov 1, 2012) - Veronica Grey's new documentary, "Aqua Seafoam Shame," (www.Pacific-TV.com), examines the huge islands of plastic trash floating in the Pacific Ocean.

Grey first noticed a mushy, plastic-like substance sliding through her fingers while paddling around in the Pacific. After some research, she learned man's throwaways have turned the ocean into a lethal dumping ground.

"There is a collection -- a vortex -- of these 'islands' floating in the Pacific," says Grey, a.k.a. the "Surf Lady." "Fifteen years ago it was the size Texas, but now it's the size of the continental United States."

Plastic in the ocean has far-reaching implications that, if not addressed within 20 years, could change life on this planet, Grey says. To date, 177 species of sea life are known to ingest plastic; other species feed on those creatures, extending the chain of damage.

"People eat the seafood that eats plastic, and the planet gets its rain from the oceans, which are being polluted at an exponential rate," she says.

China defends patrols near disputed islands

BEIJING China on Wednesday defended its increasingly assertive patrolling near disputed East China Sea islands controlled by Japan, as tensions in the area continue to run high.

The actions constitute "routine patrols and law enforcement in China's territorial waters around the Diaoyu Islands," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said at a regularly scheduled news conference.

"This was a normal official activity intended to exercise jurisdiction. This deserves no criticism," Hong said.

That followed an encounter Wednesday between ships from the Japanese Coast Guard and China Marine Surveillance near the islands, known as Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu in China. Each side broadcast their claim of sovereignty to the other and the brief incident ended when the ships dispersed, Japan said.

Hong's statement came as Beijing announced several days of intense naval exercises in the Western Pacific involving seven ships commanded by the missile destroyer Harbin. The coordinated actions set several new precedents for the Chinese navy involving anti-submarine warfare, precision attack, and other sophisticated maneuvering, state broadcaster CCTV reported.

While apparently unrelated to the feuding with Japan, the drills come as Beijing is flexing its maritime muscle to assert its claims in the South China and East China seas.

China has sent ships into the area on numerous occasions since Japan's nationalization of some of the islands in September. China also canceled its scheduled attendance at a defense forum in Tokyo this week along with other exchanges to show its pique.

NEW DELHI: Signaling their growing alarm, senior Japanese officials gave a classified briefing to Indian and US officials on the Senkaku/Diaoyu islands earlier this week. China and Japan are locked in a territorial dispute over these islands in the East China Sea that has recently escalated to the level that has rung alarm bells among strategists.

This was part of the third trilateral meeting among India, Japan and the US, where the three countries explored possibilities of working together in the region. The trilateral has attracted criticism from China, which has blamed Tokyo for spreading its anxieties about Beijing's rise among other countries.

The trilateral, the third in the past one year, has now evolved into a deeper interaction where the three major nations exchange their strategic perceptions of the region. In the past months, India, Japan and the US have been working together to develop trade and economic linkages in south-east Asia. Myanmar also plays a key role as all three countries have reformed their ties with the junta-ruled nation.

India has proposed an east-west corridor connecting India via Myanmar with Thailand and further all the way to Vietnam. India, Myanmar and Thailand are already working on a trilateral highway that aims to provide connectivity and improve economic linkages among the countries of this region, and the trilateral effort will only augment this. At a deeper level, this aims to give countries on this corridor an alternative to the north-south connectivity provided by China's massively funded outreach to the region.

While a lot will depend on India's growing presence in Myanmar, it will be the redirection of Japan's overseas development assistance (ODA) programme that will actually fund these ventures, with the US providing the strategic heft to see this through. In past decades, Japan had used ODA to its advantage, but in recent years, Japanese assistance has dwindled, and in many countries this has been overtaken by China's humongous overseas enterprise. Japan, whose ODA is currently overwhelmingly directed to India and also Vietnam, is returning to its cheque book diplomacy as it attempts to regain influence in a China-dominated region.

As India, Japan and the US engage more intensively in the Asia-Pacific, they are bound to come up against a more assertive China which will take exception to what it sees as an attempt to corral it in the region by these three countries. India has asserted that it has interests in the Asia-Pacific, a fact that was mentioned in a joint statement with the Chinese defence minister during his recent visit to India. For the US, this is part of their much publicized "pivot" to Asia.

The three countries are also looking at joining forces for economic development projects in Afghanistan, which is of strategic importance to both India and the US, while Japan may remain one of the largest donors in the post-2014 environment. India and the US are pooling their strengths in a trilateral format with Afghanistan to ensure it doesn't descend into chaos again.

Also, they will have to try harder to assuage sensitivities of China, which is crying foul. The Chinese foreign ministry issued a veiled caution by saying it hoped "relevant countries will make more effort to promote regional peace, stability and development". Spokesperson Hong Lei was quoted as saying by the official Xinhua news agency, "It is in the interests of all countries in the region."

The more aggressive Global Times, widely believed to reflect the views of a nationalistic Communist Party of China (CPC), said in an editorial, "Japan is causing problems for China, but it is not the country's foremost worry". "China has some hopes of carrying out strategic cooperation with India. If Asia falls into chaos because of how to deal with China, the result will be good for nobody," it added.

However, China too has recently stepped up its own activities. This week, China's official agency stated that Beijing had "chased" away Japanese vessels from the contested islands in the East China Sea, asserting it's "management" of the islands. In the South China Sea, where it is fighting for sovereignty of the Spratlys and Paracel islands with Vietnam and the Philippines, China has increased construction work in the newly-created Sansha city, which was elevated to a prefecture in July.

The full extent of the devastation on the island that hosts MTVs Jersey Shore came into sharper focus Wednesday, and it wasnt a pretty sight. Signs of the good life that had defined wealthy enclaves like Bayhead and Mantoloking lie scattered and broken: $3,000 barbecue grills buried beneath the sand and hot tubs cracked and filled with seawater.

Nearly all the homes were seriously damaged, and many were destroyed no trace of them left.

This, said Harry Typaldos, who owns the Grenville Inn in Mantoloking, I just cant comprehend.

New Jersey got the brunt of superstorm Sandy, which made landfall in the state and killed 14 people in it. More than 2 million customers were without power as of Wednesday afternoon, down from a peak of 2.7 million.

The governor joined President Barack Obama aboard Marine One on Wednesday afternoon for an aerial tour of the storm damage along the shore, the economic engine that powers New Jerseys $35.5 billion tourism industry.

Most mass transit systems were shut down, leaving hundreds of thousands of commuters braving clogged highways and quarter-mile lines at gas stations. Closed, too, were Atlantic Citys casinos. And Christie postponed Halloween until Monday, saying trick-or-treating wasnt safe in towns with flooded and darkened streets, fallen trees and downed power lines.

Nearly 20,000 residents were stranded in Hoboken, just across the Hudson River from Manhattan, amid accusations that officials have been slow to deliver food and water. One man blew up an air mattress and floated to City Hall, demanding to know why supplies hadnt gotten out. Public Safety Director Jon Tooke defended the citys response, saying at least 25 percent of Hoboken remained under water and emergency personnel and the National Guard are working round-the-clock.

NEW YORK, N.Y. - Superstorm Sandy left New Jersey's delicate barrier islands a hazardous wasteland of eroded shoreline, ruined beachfront homes, flooded streets and damaged utilities as a forecasting firm estimated the storm's total U.S. damage could run as high as $50 billion.

New York City was slowly coming back to life, starting with the partial reopening of vital subways Thursday, three days after the storm hit. However, neighbouring New Jersey was stunned by coastal devastation and the news that thousands of people in one city still stranded by increasingly fetid flood waters.

The forecasting firm Eqecat estimated the total U.S. damage at $50 billion, making it the second-costliest storm in the country's history after Hurricane Katrina. The estimate includes property damage and lost business.

Around the country, the total cost in human lives reached more than 90.

New Jersey's once-pristine Atlantic coastline famous for Bruce Springsteen and the TV show "Jersey Shore" was shattered. Some residents finally got a look at what was left of their homes: Sandy wrecked houses, businesses and boardwalks.

And warnings rose again about global warming and the prospect of more such severe weather to come.

"The next 50 to 100 years are going to be very different than what we've seen in the past 50 years," said S. Jeffress Williams, a scientist emeritus at the U.S. Geological Survey's Woods Hole Science Center in Massachusetts. The sea level is rising fast, and destructive storms are occurring more frequently, said Williams, who expects things to get even worse.

Across the Hudson River from New York City, the floodwaters were slowly receding in the city of Hoboken, where an estimated 20,000 people had remained in their homes. The National Guard was helping with evacuations, but residents were warned not to walk around in water that was tainted with sewage and chemicals from the heavily industrial region.

New Jersey residents across the state were urged to conserve water. At least 1.7 million customers remained without electricity there, and fights broke out as people waited in long lines for gas.

In New York, the decision to reopen undamaged parts of the United States' largest transit system came as more than 4.6 million homes and businesses were without power down from a peak of 8.5 million.

GEORGE TOWN, Cayman Islands (AP) Organizers of an investment conference in the Cayman Islands say they have been forbidden from disclosing any details about a speech by former President George W. Bush in the offshore financial haven, an event spokesman said Thursday.

The keynote speech by the former president is "totally closed to all journalists," and conference organizers are forbidden from discussing any aspect of it even in general terms, spokesman Dan Kneipp said.

"We've got a complete blackout on discussing the Bush details," Kneipp told The Associated Press.

The restrictions were imposed by the former president's staff, he said. Bush was scheduled to speak Thursday evening at The Ritz-Carlton on Grand Cayman Island.

"It's totally their decision," Kneipp said of the decision to close the event to the media.

Sponsors of the two-day conference include KPMG, a company that provides tax advisory services, and Deutsche Bank. It costs $4,000 to attend and other speakers include billionaire Richard Branson.

Cayman Islands officials are proud of the British territory's role as an offshore finance center. But members of the U.S. Congress and advocates for changes in tax laws have accused corporations and wealthy individuals of using so-called financial havens to improperly avoid taxes.

In response to the on-line publication by the European Journal of Human Genetics today (Wednesday) of an article by US researchers led by Dr. Robert Cook-Degan, a former member of the US Office of Technology Assessment, showing that Myriad Genetics, providers of the BRCA1/2 genetic test in the US, has amassed vast quantities of clinical data without sharing it, Professor Martina Cornel, chair of the European Society of Human Genetics' Professional and Public Policy committee, said:

"We are very concerned that such important data is being withheld from those who most need it. Interpreting the variants of unknown significance (VUS) that may be found on analysing the patient's genome plays an essential part in being able to provide proper counselling and if necessary, preventive or therapeutic guidance. By not sharing their data on the VUS obtained from individuals undergoing BRCA1/2 testing, where Myriad is the sole commercial provider of a test in the US, geneticists have been unable to develop the up-to-date algorithms that are necessary to best interpret the effects of genetic variants. While Myriad has access to public databases in order to help interpret their VUS results, this is currently not reciprocal.

"We know that, regrettably, medical geographic inequities are common, but what is particularly worrying about this situation is that it is the first time that such inequities have been based on a lack of access to clinical information, rather than lack of a product. Myriad's stated aim to enter the European market more vigorously may lead to unfair competition with academic institutions for predictive precision. It is vital that progress towards personalised medicine, which holds out so much promise, is not hindered by companies maintaining private genomic databases. Policymakers should take an urgent look at the regulatory and reimbursement issues involved in genomic testing in order for all the data that is essential to understanding the clinical significance of VUS to be made public, to the benefit of patients and healthcare providers alike."
