Content: Viral infections remain among the most important challenges in the management of the transplant recipient. This observation reflects both a predisposition to viral infection by immunosuppression that targets T-cell function, the diverse population of viruses, and the impact of viruses including infection, graft rejection, and malignancies. Traditionally, the manifestations of cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection have been termed "direct" (organ-specific) and "indirect" (immune) effects. More accurate terms might be "viral cytopathic" effects and "cellular and systemic immunologic" effects. The clinical manifestations of viral CMV infections are the result of suppression of multiple host defense mechanisms, predisposing to secondary invasion by such pathogens as P. jiroveci, Candida and Aspergillus species and increasing the risk for graft loss and death. Travis County voters approve health care property tax increase

Travis County voters gave a firm yes Tuesday to a property tax increase to support a new University of Texas medical school in Austin, rejecting arguments from poorly funded opponents who tried to rally anti-tax sentiment.

Proposition 1 was approved 54.7 percent to 45.3 percent, with 186,128 votes for and 154,308 opposed.

Proponents had the advantage of robust fundraising for numerous TV ads, a tireless campaign led by Democratic state Sen. Kirk Watson of Austin and support from business groups and Democratic clubs, not to mention reliably blue Travis County voters.

I always felt very strongly the people of Travis County would listen, see the benefit of what we wanted to do and rally around it, Watson said during a victory party at the Driskill Hotel.

We are ready to build a great medical center, which will be a great medical school and a great service to the people of Central Texas, UT President Bill Powers said.

Central Health officials pitched Proposition 1 as a once in a lifetime chance to help create a medical school and use its personnel to provide care to Central Healths indigent and uninsured patients. The money also would fund other health care projects while earning a big boost in federal dollars available for communities that improve their health care services to the indigent.

Opponents questioned the need for the medical school and complained that rising property taxes are pricing average homeowners out of Austin. The tax would increase the average homeowners tax bill for indigent health care by $107.40 to $276.79 in 2014.

Travis County residents have really big hearts, said Rosie Mendoza, chairwoman of the Central Health board, noting that local voters generally approve such taxes and bond issues. They know this need is here. They believe we will be able to bring increased services and better health care to this community.

Property taxes for health care would rise from 7.89 cents per $100 of assessed value to 12.9 cents, a 63 percent increase. That would generate $54 million, which Central Health plans to use as a local match in seeking up to $76 million in federal funding, for a possible total of $130 million for health care for the needy. Those amounts dont include a local match of $10 million to $15 million from Austin Travis County Integral Care, which officials announced Friday.

UT officials stepped up the pressure a month ago when they said that the fate of the medical school, which could open as early as 2015, depended on Prop. 1 passing.

It was money that was supposed to help medical research, but it really helped former medical school employees rip off the system.

A Franklin County grand jury just voted to charge a third former Wright State employee with three felonies.

Two former Wright State University employees have already beaten a trail to the courthouse on charges they ripped off taxpayers.

Eddie Walker and sister, Tiffani Richardson, pleaded guilty in Dayton last month.

But now Watchdog 10 has learned a third person is also on his way to court in Franklin County for crimes allegedly committed at the university's Boonshoft School of Medicine.

State Auditor David Yost found the medical school employees ripping off the public university by siphoning cash and gift cards. It was meant for research, but they were pocketing part of the money, said Yost.

An audit showed $94,000 missing which includes nearly $50,000 Walker and Richardson took.

For his role, the Franklin County Prosecutor is now charging Todd Mathias with three felony counts, including theft in office and misuse of credit cards.

He's accused of taking up to $17,000. Yost said if he's guilty, the judge should lock him up.

I think people who abuse the public trust and steal public money need a taste of jail. Even if it's their first offense that shouldn't be a slap on the wrist, added Yost.

The university said Monday that Edward Wing will take a sabbatical from the Warren Alpert Medical School after he steps down June 30 and return later as a faculty member. Wing served first as chairman of the department of medicine and physician in chief at the universitys affiliated hospitals before becoming dean of medicine and biological sciences in 2008.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) Brown Universitys medical school dean is stepping down next year after less than five years on the job.

The university said Monday that Edward Wing will take a sabbatical from the Warren Alpert Medical School after he steps down on June 30, then return later as a faculty member.

Wing served first as chair of the department of medicine and physician-in-chief at the universitys affiliated hospitals before becoming dean of medicine and biological sciences in 2008. Brown President Christina Paxson says Wing led the institution with confidence and vision during what she called a remarkable period of change.

The medical school last year opened a new building in the old Jewelry District and grew its incoming class to the largest ever.

Many applicants debate whether to consider allopathic (M.D.) or osteopathic (D.O.) medical programs to pursue their careers in medicine. As it's important to make an informed decision about an academic path that will affect at least four years of your life--not to mention your pocketbook--we thought it would be helpful to profile a different type of medical school, since many premedical students may not be aware of this alternative path to a medical career.

The College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific at Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona, Calif., is a well known program that offers opportunities for training at multiple clinical training sites throughout southern California. (Osteopathic medicine promotes therapeutic techniques that emphasize prevention, in addition to teaching allopathic subjects and techniques.) These affiliations provide students with a broad clinical exposure, which prepares them for the clinical grind of residency training.

Speaking with students, alumni, and faculty, some key points about the Western experience emerged:

1. Interdisciplinary curriculum: In addition to highlighting the emphasis in Western's curriculum on case-based learning, students, alumni, and faculty also praised its efforts to help students acclimate to working with an interprofessional team of allied health professionals. That team includes physician assistant students, veterinary medicine students, as well as students from other specialties with whom aspiring osteopaths will need to interact effectively in the patients' best interests.

Western places a strong emphasis, members of its community say, on collaboration, effective communication, and empathy for patients. "We may have an applicant with a 3.8 GPA and a 35 MCAT, and they may not get in, because they may not be able to communicate well with families and colleagues, or advocate for their patients," says Michelle Emmert, Western's assistant dean for student affairs.

"As a whole, Western emphasizes approaching patients from a holistic standpoint," Emmert added.

2. Proactive prevention: Western graduates frequently say that studying medicine through an osteopathic lens instills a focus on primary prevention, or preventing diseases from occurring in the first place, rather than waiting until patients develop a condition.

Western graduate Michael Carragher, who practices osteopathic medicine, says he didn't want to practice medicine by just following formulas. "At Western, I was able to be proactive in prevention," he says.
