From a talk given at the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco on September 6, 2012 (part 3 of 4, of a 1 hour lecture) Despite doctrinal differences among Muslim Sufis, Buddhists, and Taoists, followers of these traditions have a great deal in common when it comes to spiritual practice. This is not surprising since each of these traditions was founded upon spiritual insight rather than speculation or belief. This talk explores how each of these traditions grew by establishing fundamental teachings about human insight and spiritual practices. The balance between doctrine and spiritual practice was often lost over time as doctrine devolved into mere belief. By cultivating the awareness of innate spirituality the real value of each of these religious traditions can be appreciated and genuine interfaith understanding can occur. Objects from the Asian Art Museum #39;s collection will illustrate this discussion. Dr. Dwight Webb challenges religious claims for absolute authority in spiritual matters

Unbounded Possibilities (UP) initiative supports and explores discussion and research around the interaction of religion, spirituality and health.

The Center for Study of Health, Religion and Spirituality at Indiana State was created in 2003 and is one of eight programs funded by UP. The result of a joint venture by the Department of Psychology and the Metanexus Institute, a foundation that supports communication of links between religion and science, the centers goals are to conduct research on health, religion and spirituality and create a setting for practitioners and consumers to communicate.

The center is to provide a forum for dialogue and scholarly investigation related to one of the most important aspects of human experience: our capacity for spiritual engagement and the ways that religious beliefs and institutions have helped individuals understand and express their spiritual potential, particularly as this relates to physical and psychological health, Jean Kristeller, director emeritus of the center, said.

It also hopes to provide experiential learning to students and provide educational opportunities for the community and the nation. While there are few employment opportunities are available for students to participate in the center, they can work with faculty on research and gain exposure to speakers and experts.

The clients of the center involve ISU students, faculty and staff it extends out toward the community, as well. There is a weekly sitting meditation group that utilizes center space, open both to the community and ISU students and faculty.

If the center is able to help promote and facilitate dialogue across the variety of groups that are present on campus, I think we are accomplishing the mission, Christine Kennedy, director of the center, said. As we promote the visibility, we want to utilize this space to promote and model the compassion of all people, regardless of what they believe or do not believe.

The center was chosen as one of eight initiatives funded by UP in January 2012. The university funds initiatives in the beginning until they become self-sustaining. An investment of $5 million has been put into these initiatives.

Patrick Bennett, associate director of the center and associate professor of psychology, said making the center self-sustainable is a possible challenge. He added that when setting up a new structure, it may be difficult to support faculty and students.

Grant-supported research, small community gatherings and large regional or national meetings will be a source of funding for the center.

Duke University has a similar center set up to explore the relationship of health and spirituality, but Indiana States center is the only one that has set up conferences, Bennett said.

Jorhat. Nov. 4: Dibrugarh University will launch two diploma courses ' value education and spirituality and an MBA in self-management and crisis management ' from January.

Both the courses will be run in collaboration with Prajapita Brahmakumaris Ishwariya Vishwa Vidyalaya, Mount Abu, Rajasthan, and would be the first of its kind in the Northeast.

The postgraduate course in value education and spirituality is a yearlong course, while the MBA in self-management and crisis management will be a two-year course.

Dibrugarh University vice-chancellor K.K. Deka told The Telegraph that the decision to start both the courses have been taken after demand for similar courses had come up in recent times.

He said both the courses would start from January under distance learning mode by the directorate of distance education and learning of the university in association with the education wing of the spiritual university, based in Rajasthan.

"Such courses have been prepared to make one-self equipped to take on the largescale stress and anxieties that arise because of the increase in pressure and cut-throat competitions in the workplace, be it in jobs or in business," Deka said.

He said the value education and spirituality course had been designed to increase the perseverance of a person by developing their senses so that the individual does not suffer from stress and pressure in their day-to-day life and is geared up to face any stiff challenge.

He said the course enhances spiritual feelings within oneself and the person is made tough enough not to bow to any kind of temptation or adopt any unethical or illegal means to achieve one's objective.

"The courses offered by Prajapita Brahmakumaris Ishwariya Viswa Vidyalaya are known worldwide for their academic activities supported by spiritual pursuits. Their principle is that education is to improve the quality of life not only based on knowledge, but also by adhering to the virtues of life," Deka said.

He said though the materialistic standards of living has been raised manifold, such progress and prosperity has also led to the fall in moral standards of the people with vices like corruption and other forms of crimes becoming rampant.
