Students from Maryland School for Blind Visit NASA Goddard

October is National Disability Employment Awareness month, and students from the Maryland School for the Blind visited NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., for a hands-on and audible learning experience about what happens at NASA and career opportunities available to them.

On Oct. 25, 16 students in grades 9 through 12 came to NASA Goddard to learn about things ranging from space blankets to ice cores. NASA Goddard studies astrophysics, planetary science, Earth science, heliophysics and develops technology to do study them. The main purpose of the visit was to inform the students about science, technology, engineering and mathematics, or STEM, careers opportunities available at NASA for blind and visually impaired individuals.

The agenda included a tour of the Spacecraft Fabrication Facility, including Machining Technology, Composites, Rapid Prototyping, and the Model Shop. At Goddard's Spacecraft Fabrication Facility, technicians and engineers manufacture components used for spacecraft assembly as well as astronaut tools.

The students also got to tour the space blanket laboratory on the Goddard campus and felt the texture of space blankets used to cover satellites and protect them from the harsh temperatures of space. The blankets are unique. For example, to provide adequate insulation for NASA's Hubble Space Telescope, the blanketing material used on the telescope was made up of 16 layers of dimpled aluminum with an outer Teflon skin. The multi-layer insulation or "blanket" protects satellite instruments from the severe and rapid temperature changes they experience as they move in orbit from very hot sun to very cold night, even though the blanket is incredibly thin, measuring less than one-tenth of an inch thick when laid flat.

Education Specialist Katherine Bender later gave a hands-on presentation entitled, "What Iice cores can tell us about the past, present, and future: A Cool, Hands-on Demo!" Bender also spoke about high school internship opportunities at Goddard.

The event was coordinated through Kenneth A. Silberman and Katherine Bender of NASA Goddard's Education Office. They worked with Colleen Shovestull, a special educator and science teacher at the Maryland School for the Blind to make the visit happen. The partnership is being formed by the NASA Goddard Education Office, the Equal Opportunity Programs Office (EEOPO), and the Equal Accessibility Advisory Committee (EAAC). The visit stems from a partnership that the Individuals with Disabilities Advisory Group is establishing with the Maryland School for the Blind.

Firestation: Getting ready for launch

ScienceDaily (Nov. 8, 2012) An experiment to study the effects of lightning flashes on Earth's atmosphere has taken its first steps on its journey to space.

The Firestation experiment has undergone numerous tests to make sure it's ready for flight. It left NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. in July 2012 for Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas for vibration tests. From there it moved to Langley Research Center in Va. to make sure it could withstand the rigors of temperature changes and the vacuum it will experience in space. Soon it will ship to Kennedy Space Center in Fl. for a last round of communication systems testing, before being shipped to Japan for a launch currently scheduled for July 2013.

From its perch high in the atmosphere, Firestation will watch for lightning on Earth. Fifty strokes of lightning occur on Earth every second. Awe-inspiring and beautiful, lightning is also integrated into a vast atmospheric system in ways that are little understood. For one thing, they may trigger another phenomena known as terrestrial gamma-ray flashes or TGFs. Giant bursts of gamma rays have long been witnessed far out in the cosmos, but only in 1994 were they spotted closer to home, by the Burst and Transient Source Experiment (BATSE) from space. In 1996, scientists began to correlate these mysterious bursts with lightning but the mechanism of how one triggers the other is unknown. Indeed, the process that creates lightning is thought to be ten times too weak to generate gamma rays, so one of Firestation's goals will be to distinguish between various theories on how TGF's form.

Current estimates suggest there may be some 500 TGFs every day, and Firestation will spend a year observing them. Three instruments will help the endeavor: a radio receiver, which tracks the tell tale, bacon-frying sound of lightning; an optical photometer to observe the lightning, and a gamma-ray/electron detector. Firestation will also make use of a camera to snap pictures of lightning in progress and help pinpoint its location.

NASAs Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala. is using a method called selective laser melting, or SLM, to create intricate metal parts for Americas next heavy-lift rocket. Using this state-of-the-art technique will benefit the agency by saving millions in manufacturing costs.

NASA is building the Space Launch System or SLS a rocket managed at the Marshall Center and designed to take humans, equipment and experiments beyond low Earth orbit to nearby asteroids and eventually to Mars.

SLM is similar to 3-D printing and is the future of manufacturing.

Basically, this machine takes metal powder and uses a high-energy laser to melt it in a designed pattern, says Ken Cooper, advanced manufacturing team lead at the Marshall Center. The laser will layer the melted dust to fuse whatever part we need from the ground up, creating intricate designs. The process produces parts with complex geometries and precise mechanical properties from a three-dimensional computer-aided design.

There are two major benefits to this process, which are major considerations for the Space Launch System Program: savings and safety.

This process significantly reduces the manufacturing time required to produce parts from months to weeks or even days in some cases, said Andy Hardin, the integration hardware lead for the Engines Office in SLS. Its a significant improvement in affordability, saving both time and money. Also, since were not welding parts together, the parts are structurally stronger and more reliable, which creates an overall safer vehicle.
