HOUGHTON - Freedom Valu Centers/Erickson Oil Products headquartered in Hudson, Wis. recently contributed $4,539.50 to the Folds of Honor Foundation. The Foundation supports military families by providing scholarships and other opportunities for dependents of fallen or injured United States soldiers.
Anheuser Busch, the maker of Budweiser, is the major sponsor of Folds of Honor. During a six-week-long campaign, Freedom Valu Center pledged to donated 25 cents for every case of Budweiser sold in their stores located in Wisconsin, South Dakota, Michigan and Minnesota.
"We introduced the concept at our summer store managers' meeting and we were all moved to help families of our fallen heroes," said Mike Sheedy, Category Manager of Freedom Valu Centers. Store managers supported the campaign with large in-store displays of Budweiser featuring special patriotic cans and bottles.

EAST FLAT ROCK, N.C. Freedom High surged to an 18-point lead by halftime and beat top-seeded East Henderson 46-38 on Friday night in the second round of the state 3A football playoffs.
The victory, the second road postseason win in school history, gained Freedom (11-2, No. 4 West pod seed) a rematch with South Mountain Athletic 2A-3A champion Burns (10-3, No. 2 seed) next Friday night in the third round.
Burns advanced by beating Hickory 28-13 in a game played at Kings Mountain High.
The game site for the Freedom-Burns rematch will be determined this week.
Five Freedom players scored first-half TDs in the win over East Henderson (11-2), and the Patriots gained either a first down or scored on 13 of their first 17 offensive plays.
Patriots senior quarterback Shawn Fairchild capped a five-play, 52-yard opening drive with a 2-yard TD run for a 7-0 advantage. Fellow senior David Burgess then spun out of three tackles for a 15-yard TD run and a 13-0 lead, before Izzy Davis 2-yard scoring run made it 19-0 late in the opening quarter.
After an Eagles TD, Khris Gardin eluded five would-be tacklers in the backfield on an end around and weaved 54 yards through defenders to make it 25-7 at the half.
The lead swelled to 32-7 on Burgess second TD run, a 16-yard burst that unofficially gave him more than 2,500 rushing yards this season.
East Henderson quarterback Seth Owen (16-of-39 for 247 yards) then ran for his second score, but a 35-yard fullback dive by Cameron Storie increased the Patriots lead to 25 points once more.

HAVANA A U.S.-based press freedom group urged Cuban authorities Friday to drop charges against a writer for an anti-Castro website who reported detentions of government opponents and criticism of the country's response to Hurricane Sandy.
The Committee to Project Journalists said Cuba filed charges of "disseminating false information against international peace" this week against Yaremis Flores for articles published on Miami-based CubaNet, a news and commentary site that takes a critical line against President Raul Castro's government.
Among her writings, she noted criticism of how authorities dealt with Hurricane Sandy, which hit eastern Cuba on Oct. 25, killing 11 people, damaging more than 200,000 homes and knocking out power for hundreds of thousands of people. Power was out for days in Santiago, Cuba's second-largest city.
Flores' arrest led a group of at least 16 dissidents, including noted blogger Yoani Sanchez, to gather at a Havana police station Thursday and demand information about her case. They were taken into custody and freed after a few hours.
CubaNet's website says its mission is to support free press and a civil society that can promote democracy and "balance the power of the government."
Cuban officials, who did not immediately respond to a request for comment Friday evening, consider such efforts counter-revolutionary. They frequently dismiss the island's small but outspoken community of dissidents as mercenaries in the pay of foreign interests.
Last week, the Foreign Ministry accused the U.S. Interests Section in Havana, which Washington maintains instead of an embassy, of engaging in subversive activity by providing classes and Internet access without permission.
Cuba cleared its jails last year of the last of 75 activists and social commentators sentenced to long prison terms in a 2003 crackdown. But rights monitors complain that quick-hit detentions are increasingly common, with authorities holding dissidents for a few hours or up to a day or two before driving them home uncharged.
"Cuban authorities talk about reform, but they still treat simple criticism of government activities as a crime," Carlos Lauria, senior Americas coordinator for the Committee to Protect Journalists, said in a statement. "Yaremis Flores should be released immediately, the charges against her should be dropped and any protester still in detention should be freed."
The Inter American Press Association had just named Sanchez its delegate in Cuba when she was detained alongside others including Guillermo Farinas, former winner of the European Union's Sakharov human rights prize.
