Statue of Liberty lit for 1st time since Sandy

NEW YORK (AP) The Statue of Liberty was illuminated Friday evening for the first time since it was closed due to damage on Liberty Island caused by Superstorm Sandy.

The statue, one of the city's top tourist attractions, has been closed because of damage to the island resulting from the storm that hit New York Oct. 29, with no estimate on when it will reopen to visitors.

The statue sits on a small island in New York Harbor, and can be seen from many vantage points around New York City.

The monument was re-lit through temporary measures made possible by a donation of equipment and services from Musco Lighting to the National Park Foundation, which is the official charity of America's national parks, according to a statement from the National Park Service. Another company, Natoli Construction, handled the lighting of the statue's torch and crown.

The temporary lighting will remain in place until permanent repairs are made.

Mike Litterst, a spokesman for the National Park Service, said it was not clear in advance whether the Friday lighting would include the torch "so it was a pleasant surprise to be able to get the torch lit tonight."

The statue's lamp is held aloft by its raised arm and marks the highest point of the 305-foot-tall (93 meters) monument, which was dedicated in 1886. "The New Colossus," a poem by Emma Lazarus engraved inside the statue's pedestal, refers to the beacon in its final line: "I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

Statue of Liberty relit for first time after storm

21 hrs.

A. Pawlowski, NBC News contributor , NBC News

You still cant visit the Statue of Liberty in the aftermath of SuperstormSandy, but you will once again be able to see the beloved American icon shining bright after sunset in New York Harbor.

The storm knocked out power on Liberty Island, so Lady Liberty has been enveloped in darkness at night for almost two weeks now. But starting Friday, the statue will be re-lit by a temporary, generator-powered system donated to the National Park Foundation, the official charity of Americas national parks.

Musco Lighting, a company that specializes in lighting sports stadiums and arenas, is providing the equipment and services that will illuminate the statue, while the National Park Service evaluates the damage to the attractions permanent lighting system.

While we work to do everything necessary to reopen the statue and every other national park damaged by the hurricane, we are grateful to Musco and the National Park Foundation for turning the lights on Lady Liberty, another step forward in the recovery of this region, said National Park Service Director Jonathan B. Jarvis, in a statement.

The temporary fix consists of LED light fixtures, powered by small generators and mounted on portable structures that can be moved as needed during the restoration work.

Liberty Island was closed on Oct. 29 as the hurricane approached, and it never reopened after the storm caused considerable wind and water damage to the grounds.

There is now minimal power on the island and crews are on site cleaning up the debris, but its still unknown how much it will cost to return the attraction back to normal or when it will reopen to the public, said Linda Friar, a spokeswoman for the National Park Service Incident Management Team.

The group charged to help New York Harbor-area national parks after the stormnow includes 320 NPS employees from 38 states, the District of Columbia andPuerto Rico.

Republicans Must Focus on Social Libertarianism to Win Back Voters

After the Republican Party was denied its bid for the White House and lost two Senate seats to Democrats, Yahoo! asked voters what they'd like the GOP to focus on in the next two to four years. Here are one voter's thoughts.

COMMENTARY | Republicans used to be the party that freed the slaves. Now they sometimes wear the label of rich, out-of-touch, racist and sexist white guys. I believe the reason for this is because of where many of them stand on social issues. If they ever want to take back the White House or Senate, their top concern should be social transformation. Their secondary concern should be sticking to their economic values, while strategically proving why their economic stance is the best for America.

Republicans should be the party known for freedom and equality for everyone. Their stance on economic issues backs freedom. Because of their stance on social issues, however, Democrats have been able to connect those great economic values with homophobia, sexism, and even racism. If the Republican Party wants to get anywhere, it needs to become socially libertarian.

Second, Republicans need to prove their economic values are the ones that work best for America. They should not back down on their belief that low taxes for everyone, with fewer loopholes for the rich, is the best course to take. They may have to compromise, however.

Compromise may mean giving up on tax cuts for the rich. If Republicans must give in on some economic issues, they should at least make a point of saying that the compromise will not do anything to help our dire economic situation. If Americans want to climb out of their economic hole in two years, they will have the Republicans to which they can turn. Americans will only vote for Republicans, however, if they share the socially libertarian values of true freedom and equality for everyone.
