The "Scare Houses" of Lisa Kereszi, Time Magazine "Light Box"

Why do we like haunted houses?... On one level, this is easy to understand. It’s all about death—that undiscovered country our culture keeps off the thought-map. Death, death, death, coming at us in the form of ghosts, monsters, maggots, snakes, killer clowns, necromancers, headless horsemen, slime crawlers, banshees, and all manner of rotting flesh and decay, aiming to infect us with its fate. The haunted house takes us to death’s door: sewers, graveyards, mortuaries, abattoirs, bottomless pits and of course, hell itself, yawning wide to receive us. Abandon all hope and enter at your own risk!

Greece hopes for tourists – Video

Greece hopes for tourists
http://www.euronews.com We may be in the midst of a economic crisis, but people are still going to take holidays - aren #39;t they? That #39;s the hope of participants at the World Travel Market in London, one of the travel industry #39;s biggest events. And Greece is one of the most hopeful. The country suffered a big drop in tourist numbers last summer, which Tourism Minister Olga Kefalogianni says it can ill afford. She told euronews: "It #39;s very important not only in terms of revenue, it #39;s also important in terms of job creation, which is now one of Greece #39;s major problems. That #39;s why we are focusing on tourism, we are focusing on investment on tourism." Greek hoteliers say they #39;ve had to slash prices by up to 40 percent to attract visitors, and when money is tight attitude is important according to entrepreneur Panos Paleologos, whose company helps small hotels to build their business. He said: "When there is a crisis, for a small business there #39;s not a lot you can do. But one of the things you can do when you are a small hotel, you can offer hospitality with your soul. That #39;s what me and other hoteliers in Greece try to offer." Tourism accounts for nearly a fifth of Greece #39;s economy and one in five jobs there is linked to the industry which makes it vital to country #39;s economic recovery. Libya - Hiding Bani Walid conflict and Fighting - To boost tourism
== BoozWheez - Updates the World == Please subscribe for regular updates ..... Like my Facebook page http://www.facebook.com Libya glosses over Bani Walid conflict in bid to boost tourism While the Libyan town of Bani Walid has been gripped by violence for the past few weeks, the country #39;s authorities are trying to promote the country as a safe tourism destination. We #39;re here at the World Travel Market, a trade show taking place in London, where people can come to look for a holiday inspiration or perhaps scout for an exotic spot for a honeymoon. There #39;s one country you probably wouldn #39;t expect to see being touted as a tourist destination - and that #39;s Libya. "The places where the tourists are interested in, the sites, are completely safe. I can recommend the east of Libya for anyone to come there and I can guarantee it #39;s going to be safe even more than cities like London or New York." But here #39;s somewhere that #39;s not mentioned in the tourist guide. Bani Walid - a desert town that #39;s remained loyal to late leader, Colonel Gaddafi, has become the scene of some of the fiercest fighting since the Libyan uprising last year. Despite reports of indiscriminate shelling and gas attacks on the local population at the hands of the Libyan army, there #39;s been an almost total media blackout in the UK. RT ran the story for more than a fortnight, before anyone else picked it up. Back in London and despite Libya being showcased, it seems that Bani Walid has once again been conveniently left out of ...From:BoozWheezViews:0 0ratingsTime:03:33More inNews Politics

Special WTM 2012 Travel Gift From Taipei City Government

TAIPEI, TAIWAN--(Marketwire - Nov 7, 2012) - Thinking of a trip to Asia? Taipei is your perfect choice! During the November 5~8 World Travel Market (WTM 2012) in London, the Taipei City Government's Department of Information and Tourism has been targeting the United Kingdom's DIY travelers with promotions of the city's many scenic attractions and its high-value Taipei Pass, along with giveaways of a super-value promotional-discount gift item containing deals valued at up to 23,000 New Taiwan Dollars (480).

The Department of Information and Tourism says that the Taipei Pass makes use of the city's comprehensive public-transportation ultra-convenient, with unlimited use of the Taipei Metro and public bus system during its period of validity, and there is also the extra bonus of an attached booklet providing preferential deals at over 100 selected local businesses. There are discounts on such things as Taipei's most famous souvenir gift, pineapple cakes, on other specialty fine-food delicacies such as xiaolongbao (steamed dumplings) and beef noodles, on hot-spring outings and foot & body health massages, and on much else too -- with an impressive total value of up to 480! This brings the DIY traveler the promotions and discounts usually only offered to groups, and is the perfect Taipei sightseeing choice for European DIY travelers.

Taipei City already actively cooperates with specialist British and Taiwan travel firms and airlines involved in Taiwan travel from Europe (United Kingdom). Among these enterprises are London's Ours Travel and Taipei's Edison Tours, EVA Airways, and China Airlines. Industry professionals are indicating that Taipei's attractive fusion of East and West, its distinctive cultural atmosphere, and its friendly and convenient transportation system, with the added attraction of the Taipei Pass promotion campaign, make it the premium new choice for Asia sightseeing with UK travelers.

Another promotional highlight calling the attention of trade professionals to Taipei's rich trove of tourism attractions has been the "Taiwan-style Afternoon Tea" sessions, using classic British afternoon-tea implements. Among the delicious food accompaniments that have been introduced are pineapple cakes, which are Taipei's favorite gift offering, Taiwan-style beef jerky, the Russian imperial-style soft sweets that were the favorite of Faina Chiang, the Russian-born wife of former President Chiang Ching-kuo, and the delectable hand-crafted chocolates of Taipei's cultural-creative shops. Matched with Taipei's premium-graded Wenshan Oolong tea, the experience has brought the exhibition's taste-testing trade professionals both great surprise and great pleasure. They have been reporting that prior to this the only Taipei food specialty they have heard of is pearl milk tea, but they are now fully aware of the city's mouth-watering range of exquisitely delicious snack treats. Wenshan Oolong tea, so distinctive from English black tea with its attractive greenish-gold hue, full body, and light sweetness, has also received enthusiastic reviews.

Malta at World Travel Market 2012

Malta has been very prominently represented at the World Travel Market (WTM), the leading global event for the travel industry under the auspices of the Malta Tourism Authority (MTA). WTM is a vibrant must-attend four-day business-to-business event, presenting a diverse range of destinations and industry sectors to UK and international travel professionals. By attending WTM, participants gain immediate competitive advantage for their business and stay abreast with the latest developments in the travel industry.

The MTAs stand provided an opportunity for a number of Maltese hotels, destination management companies, operators and agents to exhibit at this leading industry event at the ExCel Exhibition Centre in London, from 5- 8 November 2012. The MTA also held key, high level meetings with leading operators, led by the Minister for Tourism, the Environment and Culture, the Hon. Mario de Marco.

MTAs UK & Ireland Director, Mr Alex Incorvaja said that notwithstanding a continued challenging trading environment in Britain, our meetings at WTM have given us extremely positive indicators. Furthermore, current year-to-date figures show that Malta continues to perform positively with the prospects of another record year set.

On 6 November, the High Commissioner of Malta, Mr. Joseph Zammit Tabona hosted a reception at the official residence in collaboration with the MTAs office in London. Amongst the invitees were leading members of the Maltese and international travel industry, consumer and trade press, with the Minister for Tourism, the Environment and Culture as guest of honour.

The High Commissioner said that: This is an exciting time for Maltas tourism with promoting Valletta as the European Capital 2018 and the governments initiative Eco-Gozo. The latest additions to Maltas cultural calendar include the first Valletta International Baroque Festival in January and the National Museum of Fine Arts international exhibition project celebrating the work of renowned artist Mattia Preti. It gives me great pleasure to see Malta showcased at its best.

Minister seeing as many industry players as possible at World Travel Market

Gibraltar is exhibiting at the World Travel Market (WTM) being held at the Excel Exhibition Centre in London from 5th to 8th November. The event is one of the largest gatherings of the travel and tourism industry and the Gibraltar Tourist Board (GTB) is exhibiting alongside industry partners from Gibraltar.

The Tourist Boards stand provides an exhibition and meeting place for some of those involved in the tourism industry in Gibraltar, to present their products and services to the travel trade and to benefit from the resources provided at the event for all involved.

The Minister for Tourism, Public Transport and the Port, Neil Costa, is visiting the exhibition and has a packed schedule of back-to-back meetings during the event.

The Minister will be giving interviews to the Travel Weekly publication and for the Holiday and Cruise Television Channel and is meeting with a cross section of tourism industry providers.

Mr Costa was at the official opening ceremony and reception and will participate in the Tourism Ministers summit being held at the event.

On Tuesday evening, he attends the WTM Ministerial Dinner in association with the World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) and Visit Britain at Mansion House.

On Wednesday, Minister Costa will present the Best Destination for Architectural Heritage Category as part of the Virgin Holidays Responsible Tourism Awards, which takes place on the WTM World Responsible Tourism Day in Association with the UNWTO.

He said, We are at the World Travel Market this year, primarily on an evaluation basis, to see if the event is worthwhile and in tandem, to try and make it work harder for Gibraltar. This year, I have ensured that I see as many industry players as possible, including current tourism partners. I am also encouraging the co-exhibitors to make the most of all the resources that thevenue and event have to offer. There is no doubt that as a major tourism event the WTM is important but our attendance at these events must yield results. If we see that this years event produces tangible results for the destination and if the industry partners also report this to be so, we will consider re-visiting the event in the future.

Minister Costa is accompanied by the Chief Executive of the GTB and the stand is managed by the team from Gibraltar House in London.

LONDON, Nov. 5, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- The World Travel Market Global Trends Report 2012( http://blog.euromonitor.com/2012/10/download-the-wtm-global-travel-trends-report-2012.htm ) has been released today, November 5, at the World Travel Market, the leading event for travel and tourism worldwide. Americas: The Attraction of Forbidden Lands

Since 2010, countries previously off-limits to American tourists have become open; benefiting economically from tourism revenue. Caroline Bremner, Head of Travel and Tourism Research at Euromonitor said, "It's a small but growing market. Most US visitors to previously banned countries are expected to come from the Baby Boomer generation."

Europe: BRIC's Grand Shopping Tour

Brazil, Russia, India and China are embracing shopping tourism in key European destinations. Dynamic economic growth has led to rapidly increasing disposable income levels in these countries. Together with increased awareness of an improved quality of life, consumers from BRIC countries are keen to spend more on travel.

Middle East: Rise of Shopping Hotels

Big spenders with cash are driving the trend for Middle Eastern hotels built inside shopping malls. Wealthy consumers from Bahrain and Saudi Arabia have disposable income and love shopping, thus mega-malls in the Middle East are booming. Shopping malls and associated hotel developments are key elements in the recovery of tourism, which saw a difficult year in 2011.

Africa: Destination Nollywood

Nigeria's massive film industry, dubbed Nollywood, is the world's second largest film industry in volume terms, after India's Bollywood and ahead of Hollywood, with more than 2,000 films produced annually. The increasing popularity of Nollywood in many African countries will be a major growth driver with the leisure sector attracting film fans.
