George Church and the potential of synthetic biology
A few weeks ago, I explained why I thought biohacking was one of the most important new trends in technology. If I didnt convince you, Derek Jacobys review (below) of George Churchs new book, Regenesis, will. Church is no stranger to big ideas: big ideas on the scale of sending humans to Mars. (The moon? Thats so done.) And unlike most people with big ideas, Church has an uncanny track record at making his ideas reality. Biohacking has been not so quietly gaining momentum for several years now. If theres one book that can turn this movement into a full-blown revolution, this is it. Mike Loukides
George Church and Ed Regis pull off an exciting and speculative romp through the field of synthetic biology and where it could take us in the not too distant future. If anyone with less eminence than Church were to have written this book then half this review would need to be spent defending the realism of the possibilities, but with his track record if he suggests its a possibility then its worth thinking about.
The possibilities are mind-blowing breeding organisms immune to all viruses, recreating extinct species, creating humans immune to cancer. Were entering an age where the limits to our capabilities to re-make the world around us are limited only by our imaginations and our good judgement. Regenesis addresses this as well, for instance proposing mechanisms to create synthetic organisms that are incapable of interacting with natural ones.
Although the book is aimed at a non-technical general audience, the science is explained in excellent detail and is well-referenced for further study.
As the book documents, were in the middle of an exponential increase in genomics capabilities that dwarfs even the pace of change in the computer industry. In such a rapidly changing field if you can imagine a plausible technical approach to a problem, no matter how difficult or cumbersome it may be, then soon its likely to become easy.
To give an example of an idea long discussed in science fiction, the book addresses re-creating extinct species. Surprisingly, there is already a successful example of this having occurred! The Pyrenean ibex, or bucardo, is a type of mountain goat that went extinct in 1999. But before the last ibex died, researchers scraped a few tissue cells from the ear of the last surviving ibex. They were able to induce the skin cells to become stem cells, and then in a process called interspecies nuclear transfer cloning they were able to fuse those stem cells with de-nucleated donor goat eggs, implant the eggs into domestic goats, and successfully birth a living ibex. By extension, the book examines the implications of reviving the wooly mammoth, or even neanderthals.
Similar detailed examples and discussions take the reader through the potentials of synthetic biology to transform fuel production, food production, waste processing, medicine, and even engineering of the human genome to produce Homo evolutis. Churchs background is in directed evolution he invented many of the most powerful techniques to rapidly evolve portions of a genome to possess specified characteristics. To hear the inventor of such a powerful technology explore the ramifications of it is a real treat. Society will be exploring the issues raised in this book for many years how to take advantage of the ability to re-engineer life while protecting against the risks that such a powerful technology must bring.
Refreshingly, in Churchs view protecting against those risks need not exclude amateurs and citizen scientists. Regenesis proposes a licensing scheme, but much more akin to a drivers license than a formidable hurdle, and suggests a model where a combination of engineering techniques and basic shared procedures is sufficient to protect against any reasonable threats to safety while still ensuring the widest possible access to the technology.
Regenesis provides an accessible and engaging introduction to the revolutionary potentials of synthetic biology and should be of interest to both experts and a general science audience.

ANCHORAGE - As a biology teacher for the past nine years at East High School, Kelly Auer has become used to researching her own lesson plans and teaching materials.
"The materials in those books are at least 15 to 20 years old, said Auer, pointing to a stack of old biology texts, some falling apart, in her classroom.
"Those books will go weeks without being used, she said.
Most of the textbooks prescribed by the Anchorage School District for biology were printed in 1999, and the contents are much older.
One day we may sequence the human genome, Auer said, referring to one of the old books.
We just celebrated the 10th anniversary of it," she said with a laugh.
Auer is hoping a plan by the Anchorage School District to provide new biology materials will free up some of the time she spends devising lesson plans from scratch.
And shell be able to send students home with books without worrying theyll learn outdated science.

Biology and Mathematics Research Pays Off for Iowa and Indiana Students With Siemens Competition Regional Win at …
SOUTH BEND, Ind., Nov. 10, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --Months of dedication and hard work in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) paid off tonight for three students named National Finalists in the Siemens Competition in Math, Science & Technology, the nation's premier research competition. Biology research on the genetic basis of cancer earned top honors and the $3,000 Individual scholarship for James Howe of Iowa City, Iowa. Mathematical analysis of genetic oscillatory networks won the $6,000 Team scholarship for Daniel Fu and Patrick Tan of Carmel, Indiana.
The students presented their research this weekend to a panel of judges from the University of Notre Dame, host of the Region Three Finals. They are now invited to present their work on a national stage at the National Finals in Washington, DC, December 1-4, 2012, where $500,000 in scholarships will be awarded, including two top prizes of $100,000. The Siemens Competition, a signature program of the Siemens Foundation, is administered by the College Board.
"These students have invested time, energy and talent in tackling challenging scientific research at a young age," said Jeniffer Harper-Taylor, president of the Siemens Foundation. "The recognition they have won today demonstrates that engagement in STEM is an investment well worth making."
The Winning Individual
James Howe, a senior at Regina High School in Iowa City, Iowa, won the individual category and a $3,000 college scholarship for his investigation of missense mutations in the protein BMPR1A as seen in juvenile polyposis patients. In his project, BMPR1A Mutations in Juvenile Polyposis Affect Cellular Localization, James found that these mutations caused a mislocalization of BMPR1A in cells.
"Inherited mutations that drive tumor formation predispose patients to malignancy in adulthood. James developed a model to study known mutations in juvenile polyposis, a disease that predisposes patients to colon cancer," said competition judge Dr. Laurie Littlepage, Campbell Family Assistant Professor of Cancer Research, the University of Notre Dame and the Harper Cancer Research Institute. "His research is foundational to understanding the nature of this gene in a pre-diagnostic cancer context. It demonstrated a mechanism (i.e. protein localization) by which a single mutation can drive catastrophic consequences in the cell."
James enjoys playing football, participating in his school's debate team and Key Club, and tutoring his schoolmates in math and science. He plans on majoring in biology or biochemistry and would like to become a doctor. His mentor was Dr. James Howe, Director of Surgical Oncology, University of Iowa.
The Winning Team
Daniel Fu, a junior at Park Tudor School in Indianapolis, Indiana, and Patrick Tan, a junior at Carmel High School in Carmel, Indiana, won the team category and will share a $6,000 scholarship for their project Chaos and Robustness in a Single Family of Genetic Oscillatory Networks, an investigation of new techniques for mathematically analyzing genetic oscillatory networks.
The team's research could lead to better treatments for diseases with irregularities in the cell cycle, such as cancer, or the circadian rhythm, such as sleep disorders. Daniel and Patrick's inspiration came from the movie Inception, which explores the mysteries of sleep.
