In Observance of Veterans Day Reproductive Medicine Associates of New Jersey Extends "Helping Heroes Build Families …

BASKING RIDGE, N.J., Nov. 12, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --Reproductive Medicine Associates of New Jersey (RMANJ), one of the nation's leading fertility clinics, today announced that in recognition of Veterans Day it has extended its Helping Heroes Build Families program into 2013. The program is designed to help New Jersey-based active duty United States Military Services personnel and their spouses realize the dream of parenthood.

(Logo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20120524/NY12635LOGO )

Patients enrolled in Helping Heroes Build Families will receive one cycle of free in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment at any of RMANJ's six New Jersey locations. Since its introduction in June 2012, RMANJ has provided more than $150,000 worth of free services to New Jersey-based active duty military personnel.

The driving forces behind Helping Heroes Build Families are RMANJ's Dr. Richard Scott and Dr. Thomas Kim, two former military physicians who witnessed firsthand the sacrifices that service members make every day. Now, they're hoping to give back by alleviating some of the financial barriers and accessibility challenges that military personnel face when they need fertility treatment. For example, the U.S. military provides fertility treatment, but services are available at only four locations around the country. Personnel stationed in New Jersey may need to travel out-of-state to receive treatment covered by the military's Tricare health insurance system, or pay out-of-pocket for services provided by private clinics.

"The Senate is considering a bill, introduced by Senator Murray of Washington, which would expand medical benefits for service members who have suffered injuries which impair their fertility, potentially robbing them of their ability to have families. Unfortunately, adequate benefits to support these great young people are not in place at the current time. Recognizing that problem, we introduced the Helping Heroes Build Families program," said Richard T. Scott, Jr., MD, FACOG, HCLD, who completed his medical training and practiced in the Air Force before co-founding RMANJ. "Given the extraordinary personal sacrifices active duty service personnel make to serve our country, and the hope this has brought to many of them, we felt compelled to extend the program."

To be eligible for Helping Heroes Build Families, patients must:

The cost of certain services normally direct billed to patients may apply. The clinic's experts will work closely with military medical professionals to ensure optimal continuity of care for patients. For more information about eligibility and other program details, contact RMANJ at 973-871-1250 or visit http://www.rmanj.com.

"We look forward to meeting local military heroes and their spouses, thanking them for their service and providing the support and expertise necessary to help make this a joyful process," said Dr. Kim.

Undergoing just one cycle of IVF can lead to a successful pregnancy. RMANJ has a 60.9 percent success rate of live births per cycle initiated in women under 35, compared to the national average of 41.7 percent, according to the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology. RMANJ is also known as a pioneer in using cutting-edge technology to more accurately detect healthy embryos that lead to successful pregnancies and healthy babies.

About Reproductive Medicine Associates of New JerseyReproductive Medicine Associates of New Jersey have pioneered and successfully implemented a cutting-edge technology, known as Comprehensive Chromosome Screening (CCS) to more accurately detect healthy embryos that will lead to successful pregnancies and ultimately healthy babies. Other centers have attempted similar testing methods, but RMANJ is the only fertility center in the world to have developed a system of unprecedented accuracy, fully validated through years of rigorous clinical research. RMANJ's Comprehensive Chromosome Screening offers advanced embryo selection with extreme accuracy by detecting and avoiding use of embryos with chromosomal abnormalities prior to transfer and pregnancy.

Chinese medicine practitioners must work together – Yong

Posted on November 12, 2012, Monday

KUCHING: Chinese medicine practitioners must put aside differences and work together closely as this is crucial to further develop the traditional medicine in the nation, said Deputy Minister of Works Datuk Yong Khoon Seng yesterday.

Addressing the closing ceremony of the 9th World Congress of Chinese Medicine at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) here, he pointed out that Chinese medicine had great potential in the nation seeing that the government would soon be implementing the Traditional and Complementary Medicine (TCM) Bill 2012, which is now waiting to be gazetted by Dewan Negara.

Once the act is enforced, it will augur well for the development of traditional medicine as well as the Chinese medicine in Malaysia. I believe that medical tourism will flourish even further, said Yong, whose text of speech was read by Loh Yang Hui, the organising chairman of the congress.

The endorsement of the government to allow local universities to conduct courses on Chinese medicine is a good sign that the Chinese medicine had gained acknowledgment from the authorities.

Apart from that, the government also agrees to set up Chinese medicine units at public hospitals. All these show that Chinese medicine has great room in Malaysia. It is therefore vital for the concerned parties to have open mind when it comes to the effort to push the sector to a greater height, Yong said.

Yong felt that if both Chinese medicine and Western medicine practitioners could work together and share their clinical research, it would benefit more people by providing better treatment.

According to the statistic of the Health Ministry, there were nearly 9,000 traditional medicine physicians in Malaysia, he said, adding that about 69.4 per cent of Malaysians received treatment from TCM.

The congress was organised by World Federation of Chinese Medicine Societies and hosted by Federation of Chinese Physicians and Medicine Dealers Associations of Malaysia.

The 10th World Congress of Chinese Medicine would be held in Santa Clara, California, USA on Sept 21 and 22 next year.

Foundation Medicine, AstraZeneca announce genomic profiling collaboration

By Chris Reidy, Globe Staff

Foundation Medicine Inc. announced Monday a multi-year collaboration with pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca to identify alterations found in cancer-related tumor genes that may predict a persons response or resistance to targeted medicines.

Cambridge-based Foundation Medicine is a molecular information company dedicated to a transformation in cancer care in which treatment is informed by a deep understanding of the genomic changes that contribute to each patients unique cancer.

Under the collaboration with AstraZeneca, Foundation Medicine was granted right of first negotiation for the development of potential diagnostic products.

In a statement Foundation president and chief executive Michael J. Pellini, MD, said: AstraZeneca has a strong commitment to understanding the patient-to-patient variations that may impact the efficacy of therapeutic candidates. We are helping companies like AstraZeneca achieve deeper insight into their programs and trials with our unique cancer expertise and our ability to provide genomic information that can impact clinical treatment decisions. Together, we expect to enable a more individualized, targeted approach to cancer drug development and clinical trials.

A Globe story from September 2011 noted how AstraZeneca, an Anglo-Swedish company, was growing its presence in Greater Boston, with a research campus in Waltham and a manufacturing site in Westborough. At that time, AstraZeneca had about 900 employees at those two locations, and it also had about 150 collaborations in the Boston area, including research alliances with Massachusetts General Hospital and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

Hospital Medicine Opportunities and Pitfalls Explored during the Mayo School of Continuous Professional Development …

TUCSON, Ariz.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

Tele-ICUs are a critically important solution for improving hospital medicine and meeting the growing demand for intensive care services, according to Mary Jo Gorman, M.D., M.B.A., chief executive officer of Advanced ICU Care. Dr. Gorman presented her talk, Hospitalist Medical Practices: Opportunities and Pitfalls, at the Update in Hospital Medicine, 2012, Mayo School of Continuous Professional Development on Nov. 7.

During this presentation, Dr. Gorman demonstrated how tele-ICUs are becoming an integral component in helping hospitals overcome the growing shortage of intensivists. With the aging population continuing to drive increased utilization, the demands from payers for improved metrics and other accountable care initiatives, hospitals are challenged to overcome this shortage and to meet their goals for clinical care and operational efficiencies. In order to address this need, many have pressed hospitalists into service in the ICU. The use of telemedicine to support already busy hospitalists can improve the practice and hospital outcomes.

The recommended standard for ICUs is around the clock coverage by board certified intensivists, and more hospitals are looking to telemedicine in order to leverage this scarce professional resource to meet this standard of care, said Dr. Gorman. Its critical that healthcare professionals and administrators collaborate by leveraging clinicians and technology if they are going to meet the increased demand for these services and achieve the adherence to best practices in clinical care for their patients.

The founder of Advanced ICU Care, the nations largest independent tele-ICU provider, Dr. Gorman has practiced as an intensivist and a hospitalist. She has written numerous abstracts and articles about the growing intensivist shortage and the impact this has on physician recruitment, ICU performance management, and patient mortality. She recently co-authored a peer-reviewed position paper (with Eric Siegal, M.D., SFHM; Daniel D. Dressler, M.D., MSc, SFHM, FACP; Jeffrey R. Dichter, M.D., SFHM, FACP; and Pamela A. Lipsett, M.D., FACS, FCCM) for the Journal of Hospital Medicine titled Training a Hospitalist Workforce to Address the Intensivist Shortage in American Hospitals: A Position Paper from the Society of Hospital Medicine and the Society of Critical Care Medicine.

The Mayo School of Continuous Professional Development teaches physicians, nurses and other allied health professionals the latest, and most advanced medical and surgical practices. The well-regarded Mayo Clinic has been training medical professionals globally for more than 100 years.

About Advanced ICU Care

Advanced ICU Care offers ICU programs to improve the clinical and financial performance of its hospital partners using a comprehensive approach with a proven track record of success. It is a mid range watch that I have found very reliable, nice looking and lasting. The sapphire face is still unscratched and it remains waterproof despite multiple bike wrecks, working in the yard, lifting, and swimming daily. Time is accurate...I adjust maybe twice a year. I frequently get compliments on the looks and use it in my daily rounds as a physician. I have had the pins which attach the band replaced multiple times after wrecks and other abuse...maybe 1x/year.Overall, I would definitely recommend this watch. Good value, good looks, waterproof and tough." "I bought this watch when I pinned Major in 2009. This watch has seen its fair share of excitement and it keeps going. I use the chronograph almost daily in my Crossfit workouts and its precision is without question. The weight is surprisingly heavy for its size and I like that. The luminance is great hours after going to bed and the band is easily adjustable.I have to take it in to a repair shop this weekend to replace the battery. Maria Montessori Remembers – Video

Maria Montessori Remembers
Maria Montessori remembers is a reading from her biography, by Rita Kramer. It recounts her first experience in an anatomical laboratory in medical school. Maria Montessori was the first woman to attend and graduate from Medical school in Italy. Because it was thought improper for a woman to be present with a naked body at the same time as men, she had to attend classes at night, alone. Her experience caused her to doubt her resolution, and she nearly decide to stop attending medical school. Instead, she resolved to go on. She changed the world, and whatever philosophical differences you may have with her, her example is more than inspiring, its life changing. From:jonner jonnerViews:2 0ratingsTime:04:59More inEducation
