Statue of Liberty storm damage will take month to assess

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The National Park Service expects to know within a month the total cost and time it will take to repair storm damage to Liberty and Ellis Islands and to reopen the Statue of Liberty to tourists, a spokesman said on Monday.

The statue was not damaged by superstorm Sandy, but Liberty Island sustained significant infrastructure damage that will delay the monument's re-opening indefinitely, said Mark Litterst, a Park Service spokesman.

"It was quite a shock to see the extent of the damage,'' Litterst said.

Officials said Ellis Island's invaluable cache of historical documents and records was not harmed by the storm.

Power was restored to Liberty Island on Saturday night, but its main administration building, which houses the park's mechanical systems, sustained severe damage from four feet of flood water, Litterst said.

Liberty Island's dock, where tourists arrive by ferry from Manhattan's Battery Park and New Jersey's Liberty State Park, also sustained significant damage and may need to be rebuilt.

"The walkway just got lifted off the pilings and shifted off its support," Litterst said. "We may be able to repair the dock if it's still structurally sound, but if not it will have to be replaced, and that's a longer process."

The 305-foot (93-metre) monument, which the park service says can sway up to 3 inches in winds of 50 mph, was closed to visitors for a year during an extensive renovation. It had only been open for six hours last month when Sandy roared into New York Harbor.

More than 300 members of the National Park Service's incident response team are assessing damage to 15 national parks sites in Sandy's path.

"When asked to respond to a place like the Statue of Liberty, we drop everything and go," said Litterst. "We're as anxious as anybody to find out how long it will take to get it fixed up and open its doors again to the American public."

Liberty sweeps way into final

BY ZACH EWING Californian staff writer zewing@bakersfield.com Tuesday, Nov 13 2012 09:58 PM

Liberty's volleyball team is one match away from capturing its white whale: A Central Section Division I championship.

And that whale has no chance if Liberty performs like it did Tuesday: A focused, aggressive, precise effort that resulted in a three-game sweep of Centennial, 25-19, 25-18, 25-20.

"We have been preparing for this since the first day of practice," senior Kiki Robinson said. "We knew we had to come out swinging. We came out fired up. We did what we had to do."

The top-seeded Patriots (26-6) now play host to No. 2 Clovis West at 7 p.m. Thursday in the D-I final. The teams have split two earlier meetings: A four-game victory at home for the Patriots, followed by Clovis West's 2-1 win in a best-of-three tournament match at Torrey Pines.

"In my four years, I've never been in the Valley (final), but we've always talked about it," Robinson said. "It's the most exciting thing in the world right now."

Liberty volleyball has accomplished much in the school's 12-year history, including a Division II state championship in 2002, but one thing the Patriots haven't done is win the D-I section title. They came close in 2008, losing in four games at Clovis West.

"It would be huge," Liberty coach Lean Slayton said. "We have 11 seniors on this team, and a lot of them have been here for four years. We've talked about this for a long time, so I think we're hungry for it."

And this time, Liberty will be at home, where they were all but flawless against rival Centennial (21-11), the No. 4 seed. The Patriots scored the first eight points of the match and led 13-3 in Game 1 before Centennial recovered.

"They just wouldn't let the ball hit the floor," Centennial coach Brooke Roberts said. "They're a great team, and they'll be a great representative of our area in the Valley championship."

Liberty superintendent change questioned

LIBERTY, Mo. - Liberty is a district with a history of trouble at the top. A closer look at the process of hiring their newest leader raised serious questions.

When Liberty Superintendent Mike Brewer steps down next summer, his replacement will only be a few steps down the hall.

"We surprised a lot of people," Brewer agreed.

Dr. John Jungmann, a relatively new face at the district, will step into the role of superintendent. District officials recruited him to be deputy superintendent only four months ago.

When Brewer recommended Jungmann replace him, the school board agreed and never performed an official search for other candidates. They did when Brewer was hired. Most districts, like Raymore-Peculiar, do. Ray-Pec's superintendent search can be found posted online .

"This went a little faster than any of us thought it would," said D. Scott Connor, president of Liberty's Board of Education.

Officials tout Jungmann will allow a much smoother transition than when Brewer took the job in 2008.

That's when former Superintendent Scott Taveau faced accusations of double-dipping; taking retirement funds while working full-time. His replacement, Phil Wright, said he was forced to resign for refusing to forge documents. But an audit revealed district credit card abuse, like buying alcohol and spa treatments.

Brewer was supposed to stabilize the ship. Board members say he did.

"Mike has been the right guy at the right time," Connor said.

Georgetown men’s basketball vs. Liberty

Where: Verizon Center.

TV: MASN.

Radio: ESPN (980 AM).

Records: Hoyas 1-0; Flames 0-2.

Ironing out kinks: Other than freshman DVauntes Smith-Rivera, the Hoyas shot poorly against Duquesne on Sunday, turned the ball over 17 times and struggling to get the ball inside for back-door cuts that have been so effective for Coach John Thompson III. With top returning scorer Otto Porter Jr. sidelined for all but the first six minutes against the Dukes, the Hoyas leaned on Smith-Rivera (19 points) and 6-foot-8 sophomore Greg Whittington (15 rebounds) for a 61-55 victory that revealed just how far the young squad has yet to go. Georgetown officials wouldnt divulge Porters condition or status for the Liberty game, saying simply, He is being monitored by our medical staff in advance of the game on Wednesday.

Legends Classic: Wednesday brings one last tuneup before the team heads to Brooklyns Barclays Center for the Legends Classic, which pits the Hoyas against No. 13 UCLA on Monday and either top-ranked Indiana or Georgia on Tuesday.

Into the Flames: Liberty has lost its first two games by an average of 27 points, falling at Richmond, 84-42, and squandering a 15-point halftime lead against William & Mary to drop its home opener, 71-59.

First Liberty Power – Fencemaker Antimony Project Update

LAS VEGAS, Nov. 13, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- First Liberty Power Corp. (FLPC) is pleased to announce the completion of a 43-101 report covering the Fencemaker Antimony Project, of which First Liberty holds a 40.5% interest.

The Fencemaker Project is located in the Stillwater Range of west central Nevada, approximately 194 kilometers northeast of the city of Reno, Nevada, and more locally approximately 60 kilometers east-southeast of the town of Lovelock, and consists of five unpatented contiguous mining claims that cover a total of 100.0 acres (40.47 hectares). The Fencemaker Mine was established and first shipped antimony ore in the 1880s, with intermittent minor production continuing until the 1990's.

As part of the 43-101 report, a Phase 1 program of reverse circulation (RC) drilling was initiated in July 2012 to test the down dip and strike extension of mineralization known to be present in the Fencemaker Mine. This program consisted of a total of 2350 feet (716 m) from thirteen (13) holes collared in the hanging wall of the structure. Highest value recorded was 18.65% Sb (Stibnite or Antimony ore) from drill hole FM-02 at the 35 to 40 foot (10.7 to 12.2 m) interval below surface. High-grade mineralization exists to a depth of a minimum of 110 feet (33.5 m) below surface. A cut-off grade of 0.40% Sb was selected for an NI43-101 and SEC compliant Inferred Mineral Resource. That Inferred Mineral Resource is from five individual blocks totaling 34,125 short tons with an average grade of 2.92% Sb. Within this estimated total resource higher grade blocks, up to 10,500 tons of 4.17% Sb are present. Analysis for gold in the drill samples shows a zone of anomalous (up to 294 ppb Au; 0.294 g/t Au). Complete report is available on our website: http://www.firstlibertystrategic.com

CEO Don Nicholson, states "the release of this report confirms our strong belief that the Fencemaker is a viable property for near term production. Furthermore, with the use of efficient and modern underground mining methods, together with a milling/refining operation to upgrade the ore to approximately 60% grade Antimony, we believe that near term profitable production is viable on the Property. As recommended in the 43-101 report, we intend to undertake a further program of 5000 feet (1500 m) reverse circulation drilling to obtain more data on strike and depth extent of the mineralization, together with localized surface mapping to trace the mineralized structure on surface and to test for Carlin-type gold mineralization." The CEO went on to say, "that all necessary components are in place with our very professional project partners to finalize mine and mill site preparations, and we project the commencement of production sometime in the first quarter 2013. We continue to vigorously seek additional capital to complete this final pre-production phase."

Liberty Hill seniors aim to lead Panthers to state tournament

Last March, Liberty Hills boys basketball team somehow missed out on a trip to the state tournament.

In the regional-championship round of the Class 3A playoffs, Liberty Hill held a 53-49 lead over Corpus Christi Miller with 79 seconds to play. With less than 12 seconds to go, the Panthers lead was 54-52, but Miller rallied to force overtime before eventually winning 61-59.

Making things even worse for Liberty Hill was that its loss came two days after the schools girls basketball team played in a state tournament game.

We had to hear about it through the end of the school year, senior guard Blake Danielak said.

The Panthers, who were 34-4 last season, will open the 2012-13 season as the sixth-ranked team in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches Class 3A state poll. Leading them will be a backcourt that features two All-Central Texas honorees.

Senior point guard Shane LaCaille ranked among the Austin areas leaders in points (18.3 per game) and assists (7.0 per game) last season, and he earned All-Centex first-team honors. Danielak, who recently withdrew a commitment to Texas Tech, averaged 15.3 points, 7.3 rebounds and 4.8 blocks as a junior.

LaCaille and Danielak are Liberty Hills only returning starters, but the coaches have high hopes for sophomore Callen Mikulencak and 6-foot-5-inch senior Tyler Eyre, who played at Vandegrift last season. A surprisingly early end to Liberty Hills football season also may boost the basketball team.

To this point, what weve been really been doing is trying to find some kind of identity and identify those nuts-and-bolts guys, said Liberty Hill coach Barry Boren, those guys that are going to pick up the slack for the ones that we lost.

This season, the Panthers will compete in District 8-3A, which features four teams that reached the playoffs in 2012. UIL realignment also has pushed Liberty Hill from Region IV to Region I, the home of top-ranked teams like Lubbock Estacado (third), Abilene Wylie (ninth) and Kennedale (10th).

And Liberty Hills shift isnt the only thing thats different about the Class 3A bracket this season.

Liberty Power Ranks as a Top 15 Retail Electric Supplier

FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla., Nov. 13, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --Liberty Power, the nation's largest independent retail electric supplier, today announced its ranking as the 13th largest, non-residential retailer and a top 40 residential retailer based on information provided by the world-renowned industry consultant, DNV KEMA Energy & Sustainability.

(Logo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20120712/FL38325LOGO )

Liberty Power jumped five spots from its previous 18th place ranking among non-residential electric suppliers. The gain can be attributed to Liberty Power's strong organic growth of 25% in a six-month period.

The rankings are published by DNV KEMA in their Retailer Landscape report, a bi-annual assessment of activity and performance among competitive suppliers operating in the restructured or "deregulated" electricity markets. The latest assessment released on September 28, 2012 tracks 89 electricity suppliers. The previous rankings were published in March, 2012.

The rankings are based on estimated, annualized, non-residential kilowatt-hours (kWh) under contract. At the time the survey was conducted, Liberty Power reported over 11.3-billion kWh under contract. According to the Retailer Landscape, Liberty Power has achieved year-over-year growth of 40% by adding 3.2 billion kWh, making it the fastest-growing retail electric supplier in the top 20 on a percentage basis.

"The entire Liberty Power team works tirelessly to provide value and excellent service to our customers," said David Hernandez, co-founder and CEO of Liberty Power. "We are very excited by the jump in our ranking and will continue to build our business by fostering relationships with our Sales Channels and customers."

"Growth rates of this magnitude are frequently attributed to mergers and acquisitions among competing retailers," said Sonny Kanlier, Director of DNV KEMA's Retail Energy Practice. "In our research, we find that independent retailers rarely enjoy this level of organic growth in a single year," he added.

Liberty Power has also demonstrated high-levels of growth in its residential business. The company launched in depth residential efforts earlier this year and it already ranks among the top 40 residential retail electric suppliers. Liberty Power serves households in seven states: Connecticut, Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Texas.

About Liberty Power Headquartered in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Liberty Power is the largest independent retail electric supplier in the United States based on 2012 KEMA rankings of electric retailers. The company is also the first certified, minority-owned supplier with a national footprint, and the largest Hispanic-owned energy company in the United States according to Hispanic Business. Liberty Power provides large and small businesses, government agencies and residential customers with low-cost electricity and exceptional customer service.

Liberty Mines Reports Financial Results for Third Quarter 2012

TSX: LBE

TORONTO , Nov. 13, 2012 /CNW/ - Liberty Mines Inc. (LBE.TO) ("Liberty" or the "Company") today reported its financial results for the three- and nine-month periods ended September 30, 2012 . All amounts are in Canadian currency.

"Since the start of 2012, we have completed a number of significant milestones designed at positioning Liberty for the long term," said Chris Stewart , President and CEO of Liberty Mines. "Included among these were the re-furbishment of our tailings storage facility, the shipment of more than 1.1 million pounds of payable nickel concentrate to our primary customer Xstrata, lowering our average cash costs to $8.02 per pound on a year to date basis, the expansion of our Hart East Deposit, and the development of a positive preliminary economic assessment for our Hart Deposit."

Mr. Stewart added, "Some of this progress was particularly reflected in our third quarter results, which included a revenue total of $3.9 million , the shipment of approximately 372,000 pounds of payable nickel concentrate, and the lowering of corporate and administration expenses by more than $560,000 . Despite the significant advances we have made since implementing our turn-around strategy, we continue to face a low nickel price environment that is delaying the re-start of our operations. Until nickel prices recover sufficiently, we will operate in a care and maintenance mode and preserve the value of our ore."

Q3 2012 Financial and Operational Highlights

Selected Q3 Financial Highlights

Review of Q3 Financial Performance Revenue for Q3 2012 was $3.9 million , up from $159,000 for the corresponding period of 2011. The growth was due to a re-start of mining and milling operations effective March 31 , 2012. Liberty had suspended mining and milling operations in February 2011 due to maintenance and repair work need for its tailings storage facility. In Q3 2012, the average price of nickel was $7.41 per pound. In the corresponding period of 2011, the average price of nickel was $10.00 per pound. As a result of declining nickel prices, Liberty announced the temporary suspension of operations on August 14, 2012 . For the nine-month period of 2012, Liberty generated revenue of $9.3 million , up from $2.2 million for 2011.

Liberty generates revenue through the sale of nickel concentrate and related by-products produced from its mining and milling operations in Timmins, Ontario. Liberty has a 100 percent off-take agreement with Xstrata.

Operating expenses for Q3 2012 were $5.8 million , up from $1.9 million last year. The increase in operating expenses is primarily due to the re-start and subsequent ramp-up of production activities through August 14 , 2012. Liberty's production activities were suspended throughout Q3 2011, and the Company operated in a care and maintenance mode. For the nine-month period 2012, operating expenses were $16.5 million , up from $6.6 million . As previously noted, Liberty suspended operations on August 14, 2012 due to declining nickel prices. The Company currently operates its Timmins assets in a care and maintenance mode.

Net loss for Q3 2012 was $8.5 million or $0.04 per share (basic and fully diluted). The loss included amortization/depletion expenses of $2.6 million , interest on long-term debt of $2.8 million and dividends on preferred shares of $0.3 million . Liberty recorded a net loss of $8.5 million or $0.04 per share for the same period in 2011 when its operations were suspended. For the nine month period of 2012, Liberty recorded a net loss of $26.8 million or $0.13 per share. This compares to a net loss of $18.2 million or $0.10 per share for the six-month period of 2011.
