Visualizing Floating Cereal Patterns to Understand Nanotechnology Processes

Newswise Small floating objects change the dynamics of the surface they are on. This is an effect every serious student of breakfast has seen as rafts of floating cereal os arrange and rearrange themselves into patterns on the milk. Now scientists have suggested that this process may offer insight into nanoscale engineering processes.

"Small objects floating on the fluid-air interface deform the surface and attract each other through capillary interactions, a phenomenon dubbed `The Cheerios Effect,''' explains student Khoi Nguyen. Interesting motions occur here caused by attractive and repelling forces and torques. Studying how the shape of the objects influences this motion helps us understand colloidal self assembly.

Nguyen, along with graduate student Michael Miller and their advisor Shreyas Mandre, Ph.D., study The Cheerios Effect and will present some early findings at the American Physical Society's Division of Fluid Dynamics in San Diego, Nov. 18 20.

Colloidal self assembly is a process in which nanoscale materials technology built to a scale of 1-100 millionths of a meter organize by themselves into crystalline structures. These structures can be used to efficiently and cost-effectively make many things, from pharmaceuticals to telecommunications.

The forces causing self assembly originate from the curvature of the meniscus around objects. Meniscus means "crescent" in Greek and refers to the curve in the top surface of a liquid cause by surface tension around a floating object. This curvature, and the ensuing motion, is controlled by the shape of the object.

To visualize particle motion related to the meniscus, the team cut various acrylic shapes with a laser, floated them in a Petri dish, filmed the interactions and observed. "Our goal is to optimize the force fields around objects floating on a surface, and understanding meniscus dynamics may be one way to do that," explains Miller.

The talk, Fluid Surface Deformation by Objects in the Cheerios Effect, is at 5:50 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 18, in the Ballroom 20D foyer.

Tyre recycling gets value boost with nanotechnology

A process known as nano surface intensification will be employed at a new tyre recovery facility to produce highly homogeneous wood replacement goods from waste tyres and recycled UPVC.

The facility, which will be operated by Gradena, a joint venture between waste consultancy firm Gradsol and nanotechnology specialist Dena Technology, will process around 1,200 tonnes of waste tyres in the first year before scaling up production.

According to Gradena, the end wood replacement product can be moulded and cut into a wide range of shapes to meet customer requirements and will have specific physical and chemical properties that make it more desirable than natural alternatives.

It will also be far less susceptible to degradation from adverse conditions such as heat, cold, dampness, wind, insects and UV and at end of life, can be recycled. Gradena has just received investment for the project from Iona Capital.

Gradsol's finance director Robert Paley said that the efficient use of recycled tyres and UPVC not only reduces waste volumes, but can produce new recyclable products. "We even expect to have off-cuts and end-of-life recovery programmes so that nothing is wasted," he added.

Thai Customs Officials Sieze Hundreds Of Cobras – Video

Thai Customs Officials Sieze Hundreds Of Cobras
Thai customs officials have seized 600 deadly cobras after stopping a vehicle at a checkpoint in a central region of the country. The reptiles came from Malaysia and were being shipped through Thailand for use in traditional medicine or for food in another country, according to customs officials. They were apparently destined for Laos. The cobras were packed into mesh bags inside around 100 plastic baskets and put inside a truck for the long slow journey up from Malaysia. Some of them died on the way. Working on a tip-off, the authorities set up a specialist X-ray checkpoint in Pranburi, about 230km south of Bangkok, to seize the shipment of venomous animals. The driver of the vehicle was arrested and the snakes were put into the care of Thailand #39;s Department of National Parks and Wildlife and Plant Conservation. "It #39;s a lot (of snakes)," said the head of Thai customs, Benja Louichareon. "The Bureau of Investigation and Suppression have been tracking this case for a year," she added. Thailand is a major transit country for wildlife trafficking and this seizure follows that of 4300 cobras in May. Tigers and pangolins are also among recent finds by police. Officials estimate that the haul was worth around 500000 baht (10500) to the smugglers. The snakes that survived the ordeal will be released into the wild.From:you7uber1981Views:0 0ratingsTime:01:52More inEntertainment

Caster Semenya is a Man – Video

Caster Semenya is a Man
Caster Semenya MAN or WOMAN? Female Track Field Record Breaker Caster Semenya who is about to undergo a required gender identification test gives me the run down on her success! South Africa #39;s track and field federation had been asked to conduct a gender test on an 800-meter runner amid concerns she does not meet the requirements to compete as a woman. Eighteen-year-old Caster Semenya is a favorite in Wednesday #39;s 800 final at the world championships. The world track and field federation requested the gender test about three weeks ago, after Semenya burst onto the scene by improving her personal bests in the 800 and 1500 by huge margins. IAAF spokesman Nick Davies said the "extremely complex, difficult" test has been started but that the results were not expected for weeks. The verification requires a physical medical evaluation, and includes reports from a gynecologist, endocrinologist, psychologist, an internal medicine specialist and an expert on gender. "So we #39;re talking about reports that are very long, very time consuming," Davies said. Semenya qualified for Wednesday #39;s final with the best time of 1 minute, 58.64 seconds. She posted the world #39;s top time this year of 1:56.72 three weeks ago at the African junior championships in Bambous, Mauritius. It was not clear what would happen if Semenya were to medal in Wednesday #39;s final and the test results determine she does not meet the requirements to compete.
