'First Freedom' looks back at the birth of religious freedom, separation of church and state in America

"FIRST FREEDOM: The Fight for Religious Liberty," by Randall Balmer, Lee Groberg and Mark Mabry, Covenant Communcations, $26.99, 119 pages (nf); DVD, $17.99, 87 minutes

In the sweltering heat of the summer of 1787, Benjamin Franklin requested time to speak to the other members of the Constitutional Convention convened in Philadelphia. As the delegates turned their attention to Franklin, he made the following request of the gathering:

"I therefore beg leave to move that henceforth prayers imploring the assistance of Heaven, be held in this Assembly every morning before we proceed business."

Franklin's request was summarily deemed unnecessary and denied.

Yet, despite the seeming lack of piety among the delegates, the First Amendment of the Constitution of the United States of America included a provision guaranteeing the right of each individual to worship as they should choose. In modern times, this recognition of religious rights seems to be a very normal thing, but for the framers of the Constitution, religious liberty was a groundbreaking inclusion to the rights of citizens in the new nation.

Authors Randall Balmer, Lee Groberg and Mark Mabry have joined forces to create a compelling essay, DVD and photo montage of events related to the inclusion of religious liberty in the Constitution of the United States in "First Freedom: The Fight for Religious Liberty." Using public records and the journals and writings of many involved in the development of the Constitution, Balmer, Groberg and Mabry examine the challenges the original writers encountered in their efforts to open the doors of religious liberty.

Nothing was easy for the Founders. But even with all the different personalities involved, patience and persistence resulted in a short 16 words total declaration, devised to limit the power of government to regulate or be regulated by religion. For more than 200 years this small addition to a great document has protected the citizens of the United States from interference in their religious beliefs. It has also served as a model for other nations as they seek to develop laws to protect their people.

"First Freedom: The Fight for Religious Liberty" has been well documented and offers readers and viewers a fascinating window into the process that eventually led to the inclusion of religious freedom in the Constitution of the United States.

The documentary portion is scheduled to be be shown on PBS in December and is sold separately.

Freedom's James Caldwell (11) brings down Burns running back Tylan Ruff to preserve a Patriot third-round 3A state playoff win in Kings Mountain on Friday.

Perhaps never has the Freedom High alma mater been played so vigorously after a win or been drowned out by such raw on-field emotion.

Senior safety James Caldwell made the biggest tackle of his life on Friday, sending No. 4 seed Freedom to the NCHSAA state semifinals for the first time ever with a 19-18 overtime third-round playoff win over South Mountain 2A/3A Conference rival Burns at Kings Mountain High Schools John Gamble Stadium.

The victory was Freedoms eighth straight this year but first over Burns since 2000. The three-time defending SMAC champion Bulldogs had beaten the Patriots in each of the last four regular seasons, including a 31-21 home win on Sept. 21.

Its been a long journey, Patriot fourth-year coach Mike Helms said. This was a heck of a game. And Burns is a heck of a team. What more can you ask for from a game?

Im so proud of our team. We didnt quit even though we didnt play well offensively. We kept fighting. Hats off to our guys. We did what we needed to (in order) to win.

Freedom quarterback Shawn Fairchild ran for his second touchdown of the night on the third play of overtime, and senior first-year player Andrew Ayers tacked on the extra point. The two teams had combined to miss all three previous point-after kicks in addition to blocking two punts and a field goal during regulation.

I was just thinking to myself, put it up, Ayers said. This is a team that loves to block kicks. But I knew my line had my back.

On the ensuing possession of overtime, Burns quarterback Chris Montgomery faked a handoff on his teams first offensive play and ran 10 yards around left tackle to the end zone.

IOC says India attacking press freedom

The International Olympic Committee has criticised Indian cricket authorities, accusing them of attacking press freedom by preventing photographers from covering games between India and England.

IOC Press Commission Chairman Kevan Gosper called on the International Cricket Council to intervene to allow news organisations free access.

International news organisations suspended text and photo coverage of England's cricket tour on Wednesday because of new restrictions introduced by the Board of Control for Cricket in India.

'The IOC strongly disagrees with these moves by the BCCI,' Gosper said in a statement, 'which we believe are a direct attack on the freedom of the media to report from sporting events, and shows contempt for the sporting public around the world who would otherwise like to follow these important matches.'

The BCCI has barred photo-only agencies from covering games and made a small number of its own photographs available to media.

Other international news organisations have also suspended coverage. The British press has refused to publish photographs of the match between India and England that began on Thursday in Ahmedabad.

'Photographers are news gatherers, and must be granted appropriate access to do their job,' said Gosper, an Australian who has been prominent in battling for press freedom in sport.

'We would hope that the ICC intervene and that sports administrators refrain from interfering with and placing restrictions on the vitally important role of media to freely report from sporting events.'

The Dubai-based ICC is the global authority administering cricket. The BCCI, with a domestic market of more than one billion people, has become increasingly powerful in the International Cricket Council.

Cricket authorities are hoping to convince the IOC to include Twenty20 cricket, the shortest form of the game, as an Olympic sport.

Freedom of city for archbishop

The Archbishop of Canterbury has received the freedom of the city of Canterbury a month before he steps down as the spiritual head of the Anglican Church.

The award was handed to Rowan Williams at a meeting of Canterbury City Council to recognise his work in the community.

It brings with it symbolic rights, such as the right to drive sheep through the city.

He will be succeeded by the Right Reverend Justin Welby.

Dr Williams joins others who have been awarded the freedom of Canterbury, including the Prince of Wales, ex-Archbishop of Canterbury Lord Carey of Clifton and hostage survivor Terry Waite.

Part of his citation read: "His care and compassion for the people of the diocese is illustrated by his support of charities such as Catching Lives and Porchlight, and his work in the district has had a huge impact on the lives of many of its most vulnerable residents."

He will step down as archbishop next month after a decade in the post to become Master of Magdalene College, Cambridge.

His successor, who is currently the Bishop of Durham, will be enthroned as archbishop at Canterbury Cathedral on 21 March.
