Matt Dillon traveled to the Congo to work with Amani Global Works, which aims to provide better health care to the most impoverished, forgotten areas of Africa. The star spoke about the organization the other night at an event hosted by Dennis and Karen Mehiel at their Upper East Side apartment. A guest tells us, Matt shared stories about his visit to Idjwi Island, spoke about the charity and the work they are doing there to raise money for food and expansion of a medical facility.

Dayton on leading edge for women health care execs

The Dayton regional is well ahead of the national average for women heading up hospitals, and experts credit a family-friendly community as well as a strong tradition of women leaders at local faith-based hospitals.

In the Greater Dayton region, five of 13 hospitals in Butler, Greene, Miami and Montgomery counties are helmed by women, or 38 percent, in contrast with 18 percent nationwide.

With her appointment last week as the first woman president of the 48-year-old Kettering Health Network, Terri Day became one of three area health care network chiefs, that include Fred Manchur, the networks chief executive officer; and Jim Pancoast, president and CEO of Premier Health Partners. Nationally, a mere 4 percent of health care companies are headed by women.

Day joins the ranks of high-powered female health care executives including Mary Boosalis, executive vice president and chief executive officer of Premier Health Partners; Eloise Broner, president and CEO of Good Samaritan Hospital; Deborah Feldman, president and CEO of Childrens Medical Center of Dayton; Bobbie Gerhart, president and CEO of Miami Valley Hospital; Jennifer Swenson, president of Fort Hamilton Hospital in Hamilton; and Carol Turner, president and CEO of Atrium Medical Center in Middletown.

It puts us on the map nationally, said Dr. Marjorie Bowman, who was recently tapped as the first woman to serve as dean of the Boonshoft College of Medicine at Wright State University. She is one of 18 female deans out of some 150 medical schools nationwide.

When I was being interviewed, it didnt feel like my gender was important and that felt very good, said Bowman, who came to Wright State from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in Philadelphia. During my last job, it was still very clear that I was a woman, and I was still proving things relating to gender issues.

Evolving attitudes explain part of that difference, but not all. I think its partly because people in Dayton are open and warm and very welcoming, she said.

Feldman, a veteran of Montgomery County government who spent 15 years as its administrator, noted the Dayton community is one that is very accepting and one that values its local talent. Its a place where people who are competent and who work hard can get ahead, and that benefits women.

Day attributed also the phenomenon in part to the Miami Valleys family-friendly atmosphere, in marked contrast to southern California, where she raised her two children. In California, I never drove less than an hour to get somewhere, she said. Here, there is little traffic and the schools are good. Its very easy to go to your childrens events, which is not possible if youre traveling long commutes. Dayton has a lot for families and that is very significant.

Medicare experiments with 'bundled' payments

ST. LOUIS - To improve the quality of health care and cut medical costs, the federal government is focusing increasingly on a simple, though powerful tool: changing hospitals' financial incentives.

Already, the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services is penalizing hospitals that provide ineffective medical treatment. Those hospitals with a high percentage of patients who are readmitted for the same condition within 30 days of a hospital stay will receive lower federal reimbursements.

Now, the agency is preparing to test a billing method called "bundled payments" to see if it can spur hospitals to lower treatment costs while delivering high-quality care.

If the pilot program is successful, it could be rolled out nationally to all Medicare patients.

Here's how the program will work:

. Medicare will reimburse hospitals at a fixed rate for all care related to an individual's primary diagnosis, such as a patient's need for knee replacement surgery.

. A hospital that delivers high quality care at a lower cost will make money on a treated patient. But a hospital whose treatment of the patient results in complications, hospital readmission and other problems will bear the cost of that additional care.

This pilot program is a creative way for hospitals and physicians to work together and take better care of patients at lower cost, said Walter Kopp, a hospital consultant based in San Anselmo, Calif.

"The health care industry is entrenched in fee-for-service medicine, and it has to break out," Kopp said. "This is an attempt to get at that."

SSM St. Mary's Health Center in Richmond Heights, Mo., and SSM DePaul Health Center in Bridgeton, Mo., are in the final stage of an application process to join the pilot program sponsored by the CMS Innovation Center, which is responsible for designing and testing models of health care.

If this year's election was a referendum on President Barack Obama's first term, then it was also a test of the voters' support for his biggest

legislative achievement: federal health care reform. And while polls

continue to show widespread public skepticism about the Affordable Care Act, Obama's re-election means the law is probably here to stay.

That prospect should cheer Californians, who support the federal health care reform in greater numbers than voters in most other states. Not coincidentally, California has also done more to implement the law than other states, where officials were holding back to see if the reforms would survive challenges in the courts and the political process.

The law is expected to expand coverage to more than 4 million Californians who are going without insurance today. Half of those people will get coverage through Medi-Cal, the federal-state insurance program for the poor. The other half will buy it, with subsidies, through the new online insurance exchange to be known as California Covered.

The law also has implications for people who already have insurance.

To date, hundreds of thousands of Californians have taken advantage of a provision requiring insurance companies to allow families to keep adult children on their plans until they are 26.

Others have benefited from rules phasing out annual and lifetime limits on the benefits an insured person can receive through their plan. Families with children who have pre-existing conditions have found that companies must accept their applications regardless of their child's health status.

And adults with health problems have found refuge in a state-run high-risk pool that is a transition to 2014, when health plans will have to accept all comers, not just children.

New Rochelle, NY, November 13, 2012Following an infection, dysregulation of the immune system can result in a systemic inflammatory response and an often fatal condition called severe sepsis or septic shock. Sepsis is not uncommon, yet its cause and underlying immune dysfunction remain poorly understood. Regulatory T cells (Tregs), a component of the immune system, now appear to have an important role in suppressing the immune response in advance of sepsis, and understanding this role may lead to new therapeutic strategies for improving patient outcomes, as described in a review article in Journal of Interferon & Cytokine Research, a peer-reviewed publication from Mary Ann Liebert, Inc., publishers. The article is available free online on the Journal of Interferon & Cytokine Research website.

Li-Na Jiang, Yong-Ming Yao, and Zhi-Yong Sheng, Chinese PLA General Hospital, Beijing, and Hebei North University, Zhyangjiakou, China, review the growing body of literature supporting a link between alterations in Treg function and the development of sepsis, based on animal studies and preliminary human studies. In the article "The Role of Regulatory T Cells in the Pathogenesis of Sepsis and Its Clinical Implications (http://online.liebertpub.com/doi/full/10.1089/jir.2011.0080)," the authors suggest that accumulating experimental and clinical evidence indicates that manipulating Tregs may offer a promising strategy for treating patients with septic shock.

"Regulatory T cells are receiving much attention as important determinants of both beneficial and detrimental immune responses," says Co-Editor-in-Chief Thomas A. This piece of found footage dates to between the wars, a time when the USSR was struggling to define its place in the world and establish its legitimacy on the international level, while simultaneously trying to build identity and solidarity among its people. During this time the Soviet propaganda machine was running at full steam, and this piece is emblematic of the films of the time, in its use of a minimalist allegorical narrative, fear tactics, and modeling clay to push Marxist values upon the citizens. Like other Soviet propaganda, it combines traditional Russian music with more contemporary forms to try and forge an identity that is futurist and materialist, while still deeply immersed in Russian cultural roots. Flumo shakes again its fantastic sonic mixer with release number 38, back with Sevillian Kaarel, the Berlin artista, author of one of the hotest releases of last year: "Cyclic Situations Ep" (FLR026). This time, Kaarel brings two new tracks, "Room Service" and "You Make Me Feel Better", the later comes with two remixes by Cesar Coronado and Voigt Volta (Sebastian Voigt Eric Volta). With respect to the originals, "Room Service" is a Techno cluster bomb, hard and devious, framed among a demolishing bass and a combination of quasi-industrial sonorous bursts with a particular use of a funky vocals. "You Make Me Feel Better" is a delicate sample of harmonic House, of ketaminic cadence, which focuses its powers in the creation of a sad, gloomy atmosphere, becoming step by step a beautiful sung melody, full of pure Soul breath. Cesar Coronado, on the other hand, remakes this last track in the same cadence parameters, but adding a precious retro-futurist melody with a slight dose of deepness. In the meantime, Voigt Volta #39;s remix of "You Make Me Feel Better" becomes an epic odyssey of nine minutes of mutant Techno mutante, perfect to mark a sea change in any world club. If something characterizes this Flumo 038 release, is the fact that it consolidates the label and its artists as one of the main bastions of electronic underground music made in Spain.
