'Morbid Anatomy Anthology': Brooklyn Art Group Seeks Funding For Curious New Book (VIDEO)

Mummified remains, taxidermied animals, jarred body parts -- these are the images that greet you when you visit the Kickstarter page for Morbid Anatomy.

The curiously named organization, housed in the Proteus Gowanus Gallery space in Brooklyn, is an arts-meets-science, subcultural playhouse that hosts lectures, performances and art exhibits all in the name of, well, oddities. Officially described as a survey of "the interstices of art and medicine, death and culture," Morbid Anatomy is really just a creative laboratory where curious scientists, artists, writers and weirdos get together to explore the underworld of scholarship that no one else gives a second glance. From anthropodermic bibliopegy (books bound in human skin) to extreme taxidermy to death-themed cabaret in 19th century Paris, the group covers just about any macabre topic you could imagine.

Morbid Anatomy showcases its esoteric findings in two ways -- a library/pocket museum that showcases the books, photographs and ephemera of its obscure researchers and a presentation and lecture series titled "Morbid Anatomy Presents." But now the "rogue morticians" are seeking to add a third platform, announcing on their Kickstarter plans for a "Morbid Anatomy Anthology." The illustrated book will feature the best of the Morbid Anatomy Presents series, like the work of Anthropomorphic Mouse Taxidermy Class teacher Sue Jeiven or "Stuffed Animals and Pickled Heads" author Stephen Asma.

Anatomy of CU Buffs' plunge starts with recruiting gone bad

BOULDER It was a football recruiting class in which you should look back and see the foundation for a dynasty, of bowl rings and network TV appearances. The bricks included the best running back in the country, three of the top-12 linebackers and the No. 4 defensive end.

Rivals.com ranked it 15th nationally in 2008. The class had all the markings of a future title contender at most and a consistent bowl team in the least. Which 2012 power is it?

Colorado.

Yes, Colorado's recruiting class of 2008 was going to lift the Buffaloes back to national prominence and coach Dan Hawkins to the kind of status he enjoyed at Boise State.

Instead, Colorado went downhill for three more years and Hawkins got fired. Now, when most of those players would be fifth-year seniors, the Buffaloes stand 1-10 and are a loss to Utah on Friday from their worst record since their inaugural 0-4 season in 1890 and first winless home record in 92 years.

But back in 2008, when the Buffs were merely bad and not embarrassing, what were the expectations?

"Through the roof," said senior Jon Major, PrepStar's No. 3-ranked linebacker from Ponderosa High School. "We wanted to start a dynasty. We had all these great things. But if you also look down the line, you see what happens."

Yes, what did happen?

Defections, washouts and busts from that class have left Colorado with only eight seniors, second-fewest in the country. The dearth of upperclassmen has forced second-year coach Jon Embree to play 13 true freshmen, seventh-most in the country.

Neither of those is a death sentence. Colorado has one less senior than Alabama. Schools that have played more true freshmen include Ohio State and Louisiana State.

They bonded over a long run along the Potomac River: the general and his curvaceous biographer, conducting a Q&A while keeping a six-minute-mile pace.

For West Point graduate Paula Broadwell, the 2008 workout was her entree into the world of four-star Gen. David Petraeus patriot, potential presidential candidate, married father of two.

Four years later, Petraeus stellar 37-year career is in tatters and Broadwell has mostly been missing in action after their adulterous May-December affair exploded in a blitzkrieg of headlines.

The news broke just after Election Day and on a night when Broadwell and her hubby were sharing a romantic dinner to celebrate her 40th birthday.

The disgraced Petraeus, 60, quickly resigned from his job as CIA director, while Broadwell bolted from the North Carolina home where she and spouse Scott were raising two sons. Broadwell has been staying out of sight, though she was glimpsed last week through a window in her brothers Washington home, and she and her husband were spotted walking Saturday on a street in the nations capital.

As the sex scandal mushroomed, its epicenter emerged far from the battlefields of Afghanistan, the halls of power in Washington, or even the suburban Virginia offices of the CIA.

It was through Southern beauty Jill Kelley that the world learned about Petraeus romance and that he wasnt the only officer who isnt a gentleman.

The vivacious Kelley, 37, was a fixture at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, where she served as a volunteer social director of sorts. She hosted a party for Petraeus and his wife at her six-bedroom, 41/2-bath spread in a ritzy Tampa neighborhood, sharing a kiss with the general after presenting him with a civic award.

Their friendship apparently irked a jealous Broadwell, who targeted Kelley with several toxic emails. The nasty notes were cat-fight stuff, a source told Daily Beast columnist Michael Daly.
