Job medicine to counter Naxalite problem

Manoj Kumar was elated after bagging an electrician's job at the Noida unit of a car manufacturing company.

The resident of Banjari village in Naxalite-affected Rohtas district said: "My success will inspire several youths of my village. My family and I can now expect a more secure future."

Kumar was among the 60 job aspirants selected at a mega job camp organised by Honda Cars India Ltd, Noida, recently at Gems ITI, Karwandia, Rohtas. Youths hailing from Naxalite-hit districts of Bihar and Jharkhand received training at the institute and got jobs at the camp.

"I can't express my happiness. I have been searching for a job for about a year since clearing my examination in July last," said the youth, adding that such job camps would counter campaigns by the Maoists to induct youths into their outfit.

Other successful candidates included Nauhatta resident Birendra Singh, Banjari resident Anil Kumar Singh, Naresh Kumar from Pareb in Aurangabad and Surendra Kumar of Aurangabad.

Chandan Kumar Yadav and Vinod Kumar ' both residents of Dhanbad (Jharkhand) ' also got jobs at the fair.

Atul Tomar, senior executive (industrial relations) of Honda Cars India Ltd, Noida, said: "Two hundred and fifty aspirants from Naxalite-affected districts of Bihar and Jharkhand took the written examination. Ninety passed the exam and out of them, 60 were selected as trainees."

Tomar added that there was no dearth of talent and skill in Bihar.

"The candidates performed very well in both the written examination and the interview. Trainees who perform well would get a permanent job in the company," he added.

N.K. Jha, assistant director, Rohtas Employment Exchange ' the facilitator of the employment camp ' said: "Candidates hailing from Kaimur, Gaya, Rohtas, Aurangabad, Arwal, Jehanabad, Bhojpur, Nawada and Patna districts in Bihar and Daltenganj, Palamu, Lohardagga and Garhwa districts in Jharkhand had attended the camp."

Surprise origin for coronary arteries could speed advances in regenerative medicine

Public release date: 21-Nov-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ]

Contact: Kim Newman sciencenews@einstein.yu.edu 718-430-3101 Albert Einstein College of Medicine

November 21, 2012 (BRONX, NY) During embryonic development, the all-important coronary arteries arise from cells previously considered incapable of producing them, according to scientists at Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University. The research, carried out in mice and published today in the online edition of the journal Cell, may speed development of regenerative therapies for heart disease.

The research, carried out in mice and published today in the online edition of the journal Cell, may speed development of regenerative therapies for heart disease.

Each year, more than one million Americans undergo coronary revascularization which includes coronary artery bypass graft (CABG). During CABG, doctors remove a portion of a healthy vein, usually from a patients leg, then bypass diseased areas of the coronary arteries. While the procedure has become routine and is considered relatively safe and long-lasting, the veins used during bypass do not completely mimic the arteries they bypass. They can sometimes re-clog, a process known as restenosis, requiring further procedures. Therefore, the ability to regenerate coronary arteries could usher in a new wave of more effective cardiac care.

Coronary arteries nourish heart muscle with the nutrients and oxygen it needs for pumping. Heart attacks occur when coronary arteries become blocked, causing heart muscle to die. Recent studies had suggested that during development, the coronary arteries originate from cells of the sinus venosus (a heart cavity that exists only in embryos) or from the epicardium (the hearts outermost layer).

In their study, Einstein scientists used a wide variety of research tools to show that the coronary arteries largely arise from cells of the endocardium, the hearts innermost cell layer. In particular, the arteries arise from endocardial cells lining the ventricles (the two large chambers of the heart).

The prevailing wisdom was that endocardial cells are terminally differentiated, meaning they cannot become any other cell type, said study leader Bin Zhou, M.D., Ph.D., associate professor of genetics, of pediatrics, and of medicine at Einstein. But our study shows that one population of endocardial cells is actually responsible for forming the coronary arteries.

More specifically, ventricular endocardial cells develop into coronary artery progenitor (precursor) cells, which then go on to form the coronary arteries. Dr. Zhou and his colleagues also identified a key signaling pathway involved in transforming the ventricular endocardial cells into coronary artery progenitor cells. Einstein has filed a patent application related to this research. The Nfatc1 cell technology is available for licensing.

The Einstein researchers are now trying to identify all the signaling mechanisms that guide the development of the coronary arteries, with the aim of one day synthesizing healthy coronary arteries to replace diseased ones. When provided with the right environmental signals, vascular progenitor cells can form functional vessels in a petri dish, said Dr. Zhou. If we can figure out the critical signals regulating coronary artery differentiation and formation, then perhaps we could coax ventricular endocardial cells to build new coronary arteries that can replace damaged onesbasically duplicating the way that these vessels are formed in the body, said Dr. Zhou.

'E-Medicine' May Not Be Cost Saver After All, Study Says

By Steven Reinberg HealthDay Reporter

TUESDAY, Nov. 20 (HealthDay News) -- Patients who can access their medical records and test results online tend to use more medical services and visit their doctor more often than before, according to a surprising new study.

It was believed that viewing health records electronically and being able to email the doctor would result in fewer office visits and phone calls -- and ultimately cut health costs -- but that wasn't the case here.

"Our hypothesis going into the study was exactly that," said lead researcher Dr. Ted Palen, a clinician researcher at Kaiser Permanente Colorado Institute for Health Research in Denver.

It's possible that the increase in medical services wasn't the result of online access, Palen said. "This was an association we found, it wasn't necessarily a cause and effect. We need to understand more about this association."

Ultimately, he speculated, online access will produce better health care and better results for patients.

For the study, published in the Nov. 21 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association, Palen's team collected data on Kaiser Permanente members in Colorado enrolled from 2005 to 2010.

Researchers tracked office visits, telephone calls, after-hours clinic visits, emergency department visits and hospitalizations for roughly 44,000 adults with online access to their medical records and 44,000 patients without access.

They found online users had 16 percent more office visits and 8 percent more telephone calls in the year after they gained online access, compared to their rate beforehand.

Patients without online access had 8 percent fewer clinic visits and no change in telephone calls.

Premed students be warned -- medical schools and residency programs are largely open to the notion of using the internet and social networking sites in their evaluations of applicants, according research published online ahead of print in Postgraduate Medical Journal. Some things you should never post online include: bull; Evidence of engaging in illegal activities bull; Bullying or threatening comments bull; Racist comments Researchers from the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine queried 600 staff members who are involved in the admissions procedures for medical schools and residency programs in the US about the use of the internet and social networking sites to evaluate applicants. Overall, 15% of the medical schools and residency programs themselves maintain profiles on social networking sites, and about half of the respondents have personal profiles on these sites as well. While only 9% reported using social networking sites to evaluate applicants, nearly one-in-five reported using the internet in general to do so. Only 15% of the schools or programs said they plan to use the internet or social networking sites to evaluate applicants in the future, but nearly 30% said they were neutral on the issue, suggesting they might be open to it in the future.
