This lecture was given at the International Interdisciplinary Wound Care Course in Toronto, Canada on 10 June 2012. It provides a framework for assessing spiritual needs in patients in an inoffensive way. It offers the perspective that spirituality is part of human physiology and represents an potential underutilized resource or an unresolved liability in the healing process. Dr Cronjé is a Senior Lecturer and Researcher at the Department of Interdisciplinary Health Sciences at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Stellenbosch, South Africa. For more information, contact Dr Cronjé at fransc@sun.ac.za. The central tenet is that spiritual needs can be assessed and addressed without prolonged training or prohibitive investments of time. They can be met without provoking offense, projecting judgment, precipitating guilt, promoting alienation, perpetuating superstition, propagating magical thinking or producing escapism. The spiritual dimension offers meaning comfort; greater partnering and compliance; restoration of relationships; and relief of suffering. Therefore, we cannot allow our own ignorance, prejudice or fear to prevent us from addressing the spiritual needs and realities of our patients. To do so is to deny their reality and human dignity. It limits access to essential resources in the healing process and therefore violates the very precepts of our profession. Two male patients in their 30 #39;s and 40 #39;s, both of whom have presented with an unusual dermopathy. They have seen numerous physicians and been shocked by another differing diagnosis on each visit - so far including Norwegian scabies, #39;a mild skin cancer, #39; dracunculiasis, nodular prurigo, Morgellons and delusional parasitosis. So far, blood and other results have been within normal range, and have not confirmed any pathology at all. Even a biopsy hasn #39;t helped. Several drugs have been tried, and each has failed to resolve matters. Disease progression continues - symptoms to date have included very unusual lesions, moving lumps under the skin on the arms and legs, maggots on the skin and in body cavities, foul-smelling eruptions from the feet, waxy scabs, deterioration in mental health, sinister-looking movements of and from the ears, broken teeth, worms moving under the skin of the face, flashing lights under the skin, electric shocks, headache and apparently rapid ageing, continuously greasy hair, huge appetite for sweets, hair and moustaches that goes grey and seems to move / grow whilst being filmed, and the list gores on. Most of it has been captured on video, and this profiel is dedicated to it.
