Improving 3-D image capture in real time

ScienceDaily (Nov. 23, 2012) Researchers at the UPNA-Public University of Navarre develop a technique to improve the capture in real time of three-dimensional images. The work, published in a leading scientific journal on Computation and Artificial Intelligence, has applications in aeronautics, the automotive sector and operating rooms.

A team of researchers of the Public University of Navarre has developed a technique that enables the processing in real time of 3-D images to be improved. The work, which has applications for 3-D video, aeronautics, the automotive sector or intelligent systems for operating theatres, for example, has been published in the American journal "IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence," a leading publication in terms of its impact in the field of Computational Sciences and Artificial Intelligence.

This research comes within the framework of the PhD thesis that Leonardo de Maeztu-Reinares, a Telecommunications Engineer, has developed at the Public University of Navarre. Co-authors of the paper are Rafael Cabeza-Laguna and Arantxa Villanueva-Larre, lecturers in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Electronics.

The work is based on stereoscopic vision, a technique for obtaining 3-D images. "The basic principle of stereoscopy is the use of two or more cameras that simultaneously pick up the same scene from different positions, similar to what human eyes do," say the authors. That way, two or more images are captured for each instant in time and are compared with each other to work out how far the objects are from the cameras, and that way capture the depth lacking in a classical photograph, which is two-dimensional."

According to the authors, this comparison of two stereoscopic images requires "a considerable computational load and great algorithmic complexity," if accurate results are to be produced. In actual fact, the work published proposes that three modifications be made to the algorithms (understood as operations or instructions) that allow a technique to be reused; this used to be known as the so-called anisotropic diffusion in order to compare pairs of stereoscopic images.

"The algorithm proposed," says Leornardo de Maeztu, "yields better results than other previous ones in the same class and, what is more, presents a very interesting competitive advantage: it can be implemented in real time using a standard graphics card. Although they are algorithms that require a great calculating capacity, if the whole potential of current graphics processors is used, it is possible to execute in real time, in other words, to process as many images per second as those caught by the corresponding camera."

Applications of stereoscopic vision

This research into stereoscopic vision has applications in fields like 3-D video recording, the monitoring of the environment in vehicles (unmanned planes and helicopters, vehicles, etc.) or intelligent systems for operating theatres.

According to the classification of Journal Citation Reports (JCR) which appraises world scientific journals, the publication "IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence," which includes the article by the researchers at the Public University of Navarre, leads the world ranking within the ones devoted to Computational Sciences and Artificial Intelligence in terms of its impact factor. It is published by the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers), a worldwide professional organisation with its headquarters in the United States and which brings together nearly 400,000 professionals in the new technologies.

Minority Report-inspired software predicts when laws are about to be broken

London, November 24 (ANI): The U.S. military has funded an artificial intelligence system that connects to surveillance cameras to predict when people are about to commit a crime.

The software, which has been dubbed as Mind's Eye, recognises human activities seen on CCTV and uses algorithms to predict what the targets might do next and then notify the authorities.

The technology has echoes of the Hollywood film 'Minority Report', in which people are punished for crimes they are predicted to commit, rather than after committing a crime, the Daily Mail reported.

In their study, scientists from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania focus on the "automatic detection of anomalous and threatening behaviour" by simulating the ways humans filter and generalise information from the senses.

The system works using a high-level artificial intelligence infrastructure the researchers call a "cognitive engine" that can learn to link relevant signals with background knowledge and tie it together.

The signals the AI can recognise - characterised by verbs including 'walk', 'run', 'carry', 'pick-up', 'haul', 'follow', and 'chase', among others - cover basic action types which are then set in context to see whether they constitute suspicious behaviour.

The device is expected to be used at airports, bus and train stations, as well as in military contexts where differentiating between suspicious and non-suspicious behaviour is important, like when trying to differentiate between civilians and militants in places like Afghanistan.

According to Phys.org, this automated approach to surveillance could one day tempt authorities to replace humans with computers as CCTV camera operators.

Human operators are expensive to maintain and also fallible: distracted or drowsy operators pose a risk to safety if they miss danger signs, while ever-vigilant computers, once installed, are cheaper to employ.

Also, cameras that do nothing but record what they are seeing can only provide information after a crime has occurred, while the latest research hopes to use unmanned cameras to prevent crimes or dangerous behaviour happening at all. (ANI)

Promise seen in deep-learning programs

Using an artificial intelligence technique inspired by theories about how the brain recognizes patterns, technology companies are reporting startling gains in fields as diverse as computer vision, speech recognition and the identification of promising new molecules for designing drugs.

The advances have led to widespread enthusiasm among researchers who design software to perform human activities like seeing, listening and thinking. They offer the promise of machines that converse with humans and perform tasks like driving cars and working in factories, raising the specter of automated robots that could replace human workers.

The technology, called deep learning, has already been put to use in services like Apple's Siri virtual personal assistant, which is based on Nuance Communications' speech recognition service, and in Google's Street View, which uses machine vision to identify specific addresses.

But what is new in recent months is the growing speed and accuracy of deep-learning programs, often called artificial neural networks or just "neural nets" for their resemblance to the neural connections in the brain.

''There has been a number of stunning new results with deep-learning methods," said Yann LeCun, a computer scientist at New York University who did pioneering research in handwriting recognition at Bell Laboratories. "The kind of jump we are seeing in the accuracy of these systems is very rare indeed."

Artificial intelligence researchers are acutely aware of the dangers of being overly optimistic. Their field has long been plagued by outbursts of misplaced enthusiasm followed by equally striking declines.

In the 1960s, some computer scientists believed that a workable artificial intelligence system was just 10 years away. In the 1980s, a wave of commercial startups collapsed, leading to what some people called the "AI winter."

But recent achievements have impressed a wide spectrum of computer experts. In October, for example, a team of graduate students studying with the University of Toronto computer scientist Geoffrey E. Hinton won the top prize, $22,000, in a contest sponsored by Merck to design software to help find molecules that might lead to new drugs.

From a data set describing the chemical structure of 15 different molecules, they used deep-learning software to determine which molecule was most likely to be an effective drug agent.

The achievement was particularly impressive because the team decided to enter the contest at the last minute and designed its software with no specific knowledge about how the molecules bind to their targets. The students were also working with a relatively small set of data; neural nets typically perform well only with very large ones.

Increasing Stability and Maneuverability of NASA’s Airplane Through Derivative-Free Adaptive Control – Video

Increasing Stability and Maneuverability of NASA #39;s Airplane Through Derivative-Free Adaptive Control
A recently developed "derivative-free adaptive control architecture" increases overall airplane safety of NASA AirSTAR flight test vehicle through dramatic improvements in stability, maneuverability, and probability of safe landing under adverse conditions, including aircraft damage. AirSTAR is a scaled transport airplane development by NASA Langley Research Center. This video illustrates that the proposed adaptive controller improves this airplane #39;s performance by at least a factor of two, which is evaluated against surface failures and degraded damping experiments. Dr. David Cox from NASA Langley Research Center talked about this method as "... one that I #39;ll front note, this controller wins in the least iteration category. It is the only controller that didn #39;t get tuned up based on pilot feedback or the initial flight data ... I don #39;t know how to quantify it, but when it just works out-of-the-box that #39;s the level of robustness I think everyone is seeking in adaptive controllers". The derivative-free adaptive controller provides faster adaptation and smoother error transients, particularly for situations where airplane dynamics undergo a sudden change in dynamics, either due to reconfiguration, deployment of a payload, or structural damage, and hence, it is beneficial for safety critical aerospace systems. For more information about this adaptive controller, check the paper by Tansel Yucelen and Anthony J. Calise: tanselyucelen.comFrom:Tansel YucelenViews:2 0ratingsTime:02:20More inScience Technology
