Valentino says couture offers designers "the maximum freedom" to create.
The Italian designer - full name Valentino Clemente Ludovico Garavani - retired from the industry in January 2008, with an exhibition of his most iconic work opening in London, UK, later this month.
The star is famed for his flamboyant evening dresses, often coming in the bright hue known as Valentino red. He believes working on such pieces is what really makes a designer.
"Couture for me is the maximum freedom of real creation," he told British newspaper The Independent. "No limit to creativity, to beauty. No boring numbers but pure imagination. I hope it still represents the same for my fellow designers who work in couture."
Valentino enjoys looking back on his career, which started in 1959 when he opened a store in Rome. He can pinpoint the good and bad during each decade he worked, explaining fashion changed an enormous amount while he was in the industry.
"The 1960s were for me the discovery: opening my fashion house, the first success, the encounter with women who help me creating my style. The 1970s meant establishment, the creation of ready to wear... the fashion inspiration of the freedom. The 1980s were the commercial years, the big diffusion, the important business deals, the building of an empire," he said.
Not all his memories are good ones though. He didn't enjoy much of what was created during the '90s, although he isn't clear whether he is talking about his own work or that of his contemporaries. That said, Valentino believes what women want from their clothes has never really changed.
"The 1990s were interesting, but the most depressing in a certain sense, I dont like to remember the fashion of these years. The 2000s have been the big change in fashion," he said. "The creation of the big conglomerates, the bottom-line importance. And for me the beautiful, unforgettable, touching moment of quitting. But for me a woman has always had the desire to look her best. Beauty does not change, style does me.

Her own way: Gian Slater and her experimental ensemble, Invenio.
AS THE daughter of a pianist and an opera singer, Gian Slater always had a natural inclination towards music. Her extended family is full of musicians, too, and Slater has fond memories of singing in concerts along with her brothers, parents and other relatives. "We were like this little Von Trapp family," she says with a laugh.
Slater, 29, can't recall a time when she didn't want to be a singer. But while her vocation seemed clear, the path towards it was sometimes less obvious. Blessed with a gloriously pure voice and near-perfect pitch, she was persuaded by her music teachers to study classical singing - "and I just hated it," she says. "I'd always want to change the melody and do things a bit differently. So it never really suited me."
In jazz, she found the freedom that was missing in the classical world. She discovered a love of improvising, and also began writing her own songs - songs with unusual melodies and harmonies that were often far removed from the standard fare one might expect from an emerging jazz singer.

"I was listening to lots of instrumental music that was really fresh and new," she says. "I was trying all sorts of different things, and I had very supportive teachers and peers, so it didn't occur to me that what I was interested in was a bit unusual until I left the [Victorian College of the Arts]. You know, [as a student] you have all these ideas you're really proud of and you're really gung-ho and ready to go out into the world. So it's a bit of a slap in the face when you realise how difficult it is to get people to listen to your music."

Slater admits her shyness and dislike of self-promotion haven't helped her cause - "the industry side of things really puts me off''. But this softly spoken young woman comes equipped with a deep resolve, and she has persisted in doing things her own way, writing songs with deeply philosophical lyrics - or singing without words and using her voice as an instrument.
"I've always been really baffled as to why people find [wordless singing] so puzzling," she says. ''I mean, everyone hums tunes without lyrics in the shower. But I still have people coming up to me after gigs where I've been singing wordless [vocals] and asking me, 'Did you forget the words, love'?''.
Little by little, though, Slater's road-less-travelled approach has begun to pay off. Her concerts and recordings have consistently attracted glowing critiques, and in 2010 she won a substantial commission from the Melbourne Jazz Fringe Festival. For the commission concert, Slater formed an experimental 14-piece vocal ensemble - Invenio - and created a startling a cappella suite (Gone, Without Saying) exploring the idea of communication without words.

Future regulation of the press should "err on the side of freedom", William Hague has warned, before Lord Justice Leveson's eagerly anticipated reform proposals are published.
The Foreign Secretary said he was a "big supporter of press freedom", but stressed that he wants to read the Leveson report before giving his verdict on it.
He dismissed suggestions that Prime Minister David Cameron had already made up his mind to reject state regulation, pointing out that "none of us" had yet seen Lord Justice Leveson's recommendations, which are to be published on Thursday.
"Although I'm a big supporter of the freedom of the press, I'm also a big supporter of actually reading something before you pronounce on it," he told BBC1's Andrew Marr Show.
"We will have to do that, but in my case, from the philosophical viewpoint that you have to err on the side of freedom."
Downing Street said Mr Cameron is keeping an open mind and would make no decisions before he has seen the report, which follows the Leveson Inquiry which he set up in the wake of last year's phone-hacking scandal.
The Mail on Sunday newspaper reported that the Prime Minister would back a new, tougher model of self-regulation to replace the Press Complaints Commission, but with the threat that a statutory system could be brought in later if matters do not improve.
But Number 10 played down any suggestion that the Prime Minister had already made up his mind on the Leveson report. "The Prime Minister is open-minded about Lord Justice Leveson's report and will read it in full before he makes any decision about what to do," a spokesman said.
Mr Cameron and some other senior Government figures will have access to it on Wednesday so that he can make a substantive response when it is released.
He faces a tricky dilemma balancing the demands of victims of press intrusion for tighter controls without alienating media and even members of his own Cabinet, including Michael Gove, Eric Pickles and George Osborne, who have signalled their opposition to statutory regulation.

They couldn't possibly have coped with the ever-increasing number of freedom fighters who are still trooping in, even 65 years after Independence, to claim the benefits the government gives those who gave the best years of their lives for the country.
And they have been coming not in ones and twos, but in thousands.
Home ministry officials say the number of applications for pension under a 1972 scheme for freedom fighters has been rising, with some 9,300 claims coming in last year.
In 2010, the ministry received nearly 7,400 applications, 1,400 more than in the previous year.
"This is astonishing. Many of these applicants were barely 10 years old in 1947," a ministry official told The Telegraph.
"When we asked some of those who had come knocking on the ministry's door for pension why they were so late, they told us they were not aware of the scheme. We later found the (freedom fighter) certificates of most of them were forged."
An official said the policy the ministry followed for accepting claims was the applicant had to be at least 15 years old in 1947.
Sources said they have had to reject thousands of applications. "But what can we do as every year a large number of elderly people come seeking pension," said a senior official of the ministry's freedom fighters division.
From Bengal alone, more than 58,000 applications have been rejected over the past 40 years, sources said.

Lord Justice Leveson, who has been inquiring into press standards, will make his recommendations on Thursday.
Evegeny Lebedev, owner of the Independent newspaper, also said he was "instinctively against" state regulation of the press.
Any new system could replace the Press Complaints Commission (PCC).
Victims of press intrusion are calling for an independent regulator, backed up by law, while newspaper editors fear that statutory regulation will limit press freedom.
'Open-minded'
Speaking to the Andrew Marr Show on BBC One, Mr Hague said he was a "big supporter of press freedom" but wanted to read the Leveson report before pronouncing on it.
"None of us have seen the report yet," he said.
"So, although I'm a big supporter of the freedom of the press, I'm also a big supporter of actually reading something before you pronounce on it.
