Thanksgiving Feast in Space

Turkey and all the trimmings are a staple for Americans on Thanksgiving, and that doesn't have to change for Americans in space.

Astronaut foodhas come a long way from the early days of human spaceflight, and crewmembers on the International Space Station these days can enjoy many Turkey Day traditions, such as cornbread stuffing, yams, mashed potatoes, cherry blueberry cobbler, and, of course, turkey itself.

This year, NASA astronaut Kevin Ford, commander of the space station's Expedition 34 mission, will celebrate with his Russian crewmates Evgeny Tarelkin and Oleg Novitskiy.

"Thanksgiving is not a holiday that the Russians celebrate, but we have found that on orbit thecrewmembers celebrate each others' holidays," said Vickie Kloeris, manager of the Space Food Systems Laboratory at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston. "They will take part in Kevin Ford's celebration of Thanksgiving, just as American crewmembers will take part in some of the Russian holidays."[Thanksgiving Feast in Space - The Menue (Video)]

Thespace station's Thanksgiving delicacieswill come in somewhat different forms than what may be on most holiday tables, though. Space food falls into two categories: freeze-dried (just add water) or thermostabilized (comes in a pouch). And all food sent to the space station has to meet certain microbiological requirements and have a sufficient shelf life.

For example, the cornbread dressing on offer is a replacement for the traditional bread-based stuffing that many people are used to. However, break makes too many crumbs that float around in all directions in weightlessness and are difficult to clean up.

Still, the current Thanksgiving menu is a huge improvement over what earlier space travelers had available.

"If you want to go all the way back to Mercury and Gemini, there were no holiday meals back then," Kloeris told SPACE.com. "All you had was cube foods and tube foods. We've definitely expanded greatly the amount of traditional items that we have made available for holiday times, and that only makes sense because when we started having crewmembers stay on space station long term, we knew every year we'd be hitting Thanksgiving and Christmas with somebody."

In addition to the standardholiday menu items, each astronaut gets a certain number of "bonus containers" to pack whatever particular foods they'd like, provided they meet the basic requirements. Most pack off-the-shelf products like cookies and other treats.

Ice Thaw Climate Change – Video

Ice Thaw Climate Change
Sea ice is frozen seawater floating on the surface of the ocean. Some sea ice is permanent, persisting from year to year, and some is seasonal, melting and refreezing from season to season. Each winter existing sea ice thickens and new, thinner ice is formed. This conceptual animation shows a cut-away view of the seasonal advance and retreat of Arctic sea ice, demonstrating the current trend toward a thinning ice pack, with less of the thicker multi-year ice surviving each summer #39;s melt. Male Evening Grosbeak at the feeder
I was washing dishes this morning (which is why the window is a bit foggy!) and I looked up to see this lovely male Evening Grosbeak eating black oil seeds. We only see these birds in the colder months. They usually descend on our platform feeders in a big flock, making a heck of a racket, a big mess and a wonderful splash of yellow! David calls them "space cadets" because the markings over the male #39;s eyes make them look like they are ready for space flight. From:Beth GirdlerViews:11 1ratingsTime:01:02More inPets Animals

Meet Makemake — the New Pluto

Goddard Space Flight Center / NASA

An artist's rendering of Makemake.

The furor surrounding Plutos demotion from planet to dwarf planet back in 2006 still hasnt gone away, but all of the noise much of it coming from disgruntled schoolchildren has obscured the genuinely exciting science underlying that decision. Astronomers began to understand during the 1990s and 2000s that Pluto was just the most visible member of the Kuiper Belt, a vast ring of icy, rocky debris circling the solar system, left from the time the sun and everything that orbits it formed. Little, planet-like bodies called Trans-Neptunian Objects (or TNOs) with names like Quaoar, Sedna, Haumea have joined the Suns family over that time, and when a world named Eris was found to be more or less the same size as Pluto, it became clear scientists would either have to cut the number of planets off at eight, or eventually start counting up into the dozens, at least.

Much more important, though, is the fact that planetary scientists can actually study some of these tiny bodies despite their multi-billion-mile distance from Earth. The latest to come under scrutiny: Makemake (named after the creator god of the Rapa Nui people of Easter Island), which lies about 4.6 billion miles (7.4 billion km) from Earth. Writing in Nature, Jose Ortiz of Spains Andalusian Institute of Astrophysics, along with a long list of colleagues, reports that unlike Pluto, Makemake has no global atmosphere, but that it may have atmospheric patches that hover over parts of its surface. It is, says Ortiz, at least a theoretical possibility.

(New: Get Pluto Out of Here!)

Actually, hes being partly humble. Makemake may or may not have patches of atmosphere, but Ortiz and his team know that it doesnt have a complete one because they were able to watch as the world passed directly in front of a background star named NOMAD 1181-0235723. If the atmosphere had been there, the star would have faded out. Instead, it winked out abruptly and winked back in when Makemake emerged from the other side about a minute later.

This sounds pretty simple, but predicting that Makemake would pass in front of this particular unnamed star, in whats known as an occultation, wasnt. From Earth, Makemake appears to be about the size of a quarter sitting 30 miles away (48 km) away, and neither the TNOs orbit nor the stars position was known with great accuracy. When the astronomers found what seemed a good candidate star more or less in the Makemakes path, they calculated whether an occultation was likely, then recalculated over and over as the TNO inched toward the star. In some cases, the encounter never did happen, but on April 23, 2011, the scientists hit pay dirt.

The abrupt off-on of starlight told them part of what they needed to know about Makemakes atmosphere that its not complete. Evidence of its possible patchiness was gathered through remote observations by the space-based Herschel and Spitzer infrared telescopes. They showed that the world has spots of brighter and darker terrain, and because they reflect less light, the dark regions are significantly warmer warm enough, says Ortiz, that methane ice on the surface would be heated to a gaseous state, forming patches of atmosphere.

(More: Why Pluto Now Has Five Moons But Its Still Not a Planet)

In fact, Ortiz says, there might even be some direct evidence for such patches. The occultation was spotted by seven different telescopes, which viewed the passage from just slightly different angles. In some of the telescopes, there was a hint that the starlight didnt wink out quite as abruptly as in the others, suggesting that a patch of atmosphere just happened to be lined up with the star. But, added, Ortiz, we cannot completely rule out an instrumental problem.

New NASA video serves 'COCOA' to test Webb Telescope component

NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala., recently completed testing of COCOA. The work was done in the X-ray and Cryogenic Test Facility. The optical assembly was operated in a vacuum at both room temperature and cryogenic -- or deep cold -- temperatures to certify its performance before it is used to test the performance of Webb's 21.3-foot primary mirror. Credit: NASA Marshall

(Phys.org)The Center of Curvature Optical Assembly, or COCOA, is a piece of equipment that will measure the accuracy of NASA's James Webb Space Telescope's primary mirror, to ensure the mirrors are perfectly shaped and will work in the frosty environment of space. Viewers can now learn about a certain type of "COCOA" from an engineer in a new behind-the-scenes NASA video that explains the purpose of COCOA and how it is used in testing the mirrors.

The video was filmed at ITT Exelis in Rochester, N.Y. It was produced at NASA Television, located at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., and runs 1 minute and 46 seconds.

COCOA was built by ITT Exelis of Rochester, N.Y., and its subcontractor Micro Instruments in Rochester, N.Y. Recently, testing on COCOA was completed in the X-ray and Cryogenic Test Facility at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala., to ensure that it could stand up to the extremely cold environment that it will experience when it is used to test the Webb's mirrors at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas.

The COCOA contains mechanical and optical instruments that will check the alignment of the Webb telescope's 18 mirror segments that form the large 21.3-foot (6.5-meter) primary mirror.

COCOA's purpose is to verify the optical performance of the primary mirror at its 40 degrees Kelvin (-387.67 Fahrenheit, or -233 Celsius) operating temperature. During the optical test at NASA's Johnson Space Center, COCOA will be located inside the cryogenic vacuum chamber along with the Webb's telescope and science instruments.

Once the telescope and the science instruments are assembled together at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., they will be put into a huge cryogenic vacuum chamber at NASA Johnson. The COCOA will be placed above the Webb's telescope and instruments, near the top of the giant testing chamber, where it will project light onto all of the mirrors and into the instruments to determine if the alignment and curvature of all 18 mirror segments are correct and working together as one large mirror.

The James Webb Space Telescope is the world's next-generation space observatory and successor to the Hubble Space Telescope. The most powerful space telescope ever built, the Webb telescope will provide images of the first galaxies ever formed, and will explore planets around distant stars. It is a joint project of NASA, the European Space Agency and the Canadian Space Agency.
