Are We Close to A Skynet Takeover?
Experts at the prestigious University of Cambridge will conduct research into the "extinction-level risks" posed to humanity by artificially intelligent robots. The Cambridge Project for Existential Risk is dedicated to "ensuring that our own species has a long-term future" by studying the risks posed by AI, nanotechnology and biotechnology. "The scientists said that to dismiss concerns of a potential robot uprising would be "dangerous," reports the BBC. The project was co-founded by Huw Price, Bertrand Russell Professor of Philosophy at Cambridge, Martin Rees, Emeritus Professor of Cosmology Astrophysics at Cambridge, and Jaan Tallinn, the co-founder of Skype. It also counts amongst its advisers Max Tegmark, Professor of Physics, MIT and George M Church, Professor of Genetics at Harvard Medical School. An article written by Tallinn and Price warns that artificially intelligent computers or robots could take over "the speed and direction of technological progress itself," and shape the environment of planet earth to their own ends while displaying about as much concern for humanity as we do for a bug on the windscreen. Far from being resigned to works as science fiction such as in the Terminator films, the threat posed by a potential future "rise of the robots" has never been closer to reality. The study echoes the predictions of respected author, inventor and futurist Ray Kurzweil, renowned for his deadly accurate technological forecasts. http://www.infowars.com ORDER THIS ...From:InfowarsHeadlineHDViews:0 7ratingsTime:08:55More inNonprofits Activism

Filled with images of life on the streets of this chaotic metropolis and set to the sounds of Asian fusion music, the tone is one of fun and energy at the same time trying to capture the mutually shared feeling that cyclists all over the world can relate to - freedom and oneness with their bicycle. http://www.filmangel.tv FilmAngelTV is a crowdfunding platform for film. Los Alamitos: Freedom Choice comes back strong in Two Million Futurity trial win

Email

A tibia injury kept Freedom Choice from starting in the Ed Burke Million Futurity final at Los Alamitos in June. Nearly six months later, Freedom Choice has proven again he belongs in such races.

Last Sunday, Freedom Choice set the fastest qualifying time for the $2,108,275 Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity on Dec. 16. Ridden by Cruz Mendez, who had five winners in the 13 trial races, Freedom Choice ran 400 yards in 19.62 seconds to lead all qualifiers to the tracks richest race.

He gives owners Gustavo and Jose de la Torre an opportunity for a sweep of the three seven-figure futurities at Los Alamitos. Earlier this year, they won the Ed Burke and Golden State Million futurities with One Dashing Eagle, who also won the All American Futurity at Ruidoso Downs. Jose de la Torre trains One Dashing Eagle and Freedom Choice.

One Dashing Eagle was not eligible for the Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity because of a missed nomination payment earlier this year. The colt underwent surgery last weekend to have a bone chip removed from a knee and an ankle, an operation that will keep him away from racing until next summer at the earliest.

In his absence, the lightly raced Freedom Choice can win the Two Million. In his trial race Sunday, Freedom Choice won by 2 1/4 lengths despite lugging to the inside in the last half of the race.

We knew we had a good horse in Freedom Choice, and I thought he was going to run a big race, Gustavo de la Torre said. But the time that he put up on the board was certainly a surprise.

After the tibia injury was detected, Freedom Choice was rested for the remainder of the summer. A start in the Golden State Million Futurity trials in October was considered, but rejected.

We decided that it would be best to give Freedom Choice the extra time off and get him ready for the Los Alamitos Two Million trials, Gustavo de la Torre said. I think it was a good strategy, and it paid off.

There are no major stakes winners among the 10 qualifiers for the Los Alamitos Two Million. The field includes Aha Moment, who was third in the All American Futurity; Seperate Interest, second in the Golden State Million Futurity; and Fires Blazin, second in the Ed Burke Million Futurity.

Freedom of Information is not just about media

Kuwento By Benjamin Pimentel

SAN FRANCISCO President Benigno Aquino III has said he supports the Freedom of Information bill, which just took a small step forward this week with the approval of the House committee on public information.

But its clear that Aquino also has reservations about the FOI bill, and these concerns appear to be based on a misconception: He thinks Freedom of Information is all about media.

This was evident in some of his remarks focused on how FOI could help journalists.

President Benigno Aquino III. AP

In a speech last year, he said, This right to know carries with it responsibilities to use the information available in context; to present facts fairly; and to be conscious of some elements who may want to use the information not to inform the public, but to, rather, inflame them,

Giving media more access to information, he continued, does not mean that we want

media to be lapdogs of government; at the same time, media shouldnt allow themselves to be used as attack dogs either.

More recently, Aquino even endorsed the controversial right of reply provision, which could essentially serve to intimidate and hamper media and give people in power even more power to suppress critics.

As he told the Philippine Daily Inquirer, If two sides of a story are reported, if the details of every news are accurate and the freedom of all Filipinos to form their own opinion is valued, then any journalist has nothing to worry about, isnt it?

Opinions split on freedom camping bylaw

A freedom camper seen parked at a secluded site near the Ballantyne Rd bridge across the Cardrona River in 2010. Photo ODT files.

A proposal allowing for limited freedom camping at Waterfall Creek on Lake Wanaka's western shore has been rubbished by nearby accommodation providers, among others, as inappropriate and unenforceable.

Lakes Environmental received 21 submissions on the Queenstown Lakes District Council's proposed new freedom camping bylaw - required to meet nationwide legislation introduced last August - which will be heard by a council subcommittee today.

More than half of the submitters opposed the bylaw, mostly because it was considered too lenient. However, some of those objected for the opposite reason, claiming the bylaw was draconian.

Many submitters were unhappy with a proposed exemption to the no freedom camping zone boundary extensions, which would permit four certified, self-contained vehicles to camp at Waterfall Creek, just 2km from Wanaka's town boundary and close to several commercial camping grounds.

The Wanaka Community Board is strongly against allowing non-self-contained freedom camping in the Wanaka Ward and said allowing limited freedom camping at Waterfall Creek was "totally inappropriate" given the area's popularity as a boat launching and picnic spot.

Aspiring Campervan Park owner Richard Hutchison said efforts to prevent damage from freedom camping in recent years through education and fines had been an "abject failure" and limiting the number of vans at Waterfall Creek was unenforceable.

That view was shared by Jacksons Fruit Ltd, landowner of the Top 10 Holiday Park site on Mt Aspiring Rd, which said the exemption would create a "minefield of problems", including the difficulties and costs of monitoring the site.

The Top 10 Holiday Park frequently dealt with freedom campers staying directly outside the park and using its facilities free late at night, because of a sign announcing the start of the freedom camping zone just 200m from the camping ground entrance, co-owner of the business Patrick Perkins said.

"Freedom camping needs to be pushed out at least 20km [from the town boundary] to protect the interests of residents and local businesses," he wrote.

UC Health Stadium will host more than 200 events each year including the Freedom's 48 home game schedule, the Kentucky High School Ninth Region baseball championship, 160 youth games and 2-5 major concert events.

"Given the strength of our Sports Medicine Institute and our other highly specialized programs, this partnership was a match made in baseball heaven," she said.
