Three new organizations to start on campus next semester

Next semester, three new student-run organizations will join the expanding list of extracurricular clubs at the university.

The three organizations were approved at the faculty meeting in October. Faculty granted recognition to College Libertarians, Web Design Club and Young Americans for Liberty.

To be considered as a candidate for faculty approval, each club had to submit by-laws and present the idea for the organization in front of a committee, junior Niki Liu said. Liu is the student contact for the Web Design club.

Each organization must also have a faculty adviser that the student contacts and that members of the club elect. Lewis Barnet is a professor in the computer sciences department and will be the adviser for the Web Design club.

I chose Dr. Barnett because he has experience in web design and development, and he is also a great mentor, Liu said.

College Libertarians and the Young Americans for Liberty club share similar foundations of libertarianism, but both student contacts believe theyll have different messages and basis to give to members.

College Libertarians was created with the goal of creating a place for libertarians, ranging from monarchists to anarchists, to discuss current political issues, said junior Devin Ralston. The group meets and discusses issues and articles sent out in an email prior that week. Next semester, the members hope to start reading some famous libertarian political theory books and economic works to base their discussion around, he said.

Unlike the other two new clubs, Young Americans for Liberty is a broader organization with more than 350 chapters nationwide. Weve established Young Americans for Liberty partly out of a disappointment for apathy, sophomore Joseph Kessler said We see little political discussion on campus, and we dont see students promoting libertarian ideas.

We had to apply to become one of the chapters nationwide. We wrote about our plan for the chapter and our ideological influences. Then we began the process for school recognition, beginning with finding 10 students interested in joining.

The faculty adviser for the organization is Terry Price, a professor of leadership studies and philosophy, politics, economics and law, Kessler said.

Part 1 in a Series of Essays onGovernment

The right to swing my fist ends where the other mans nose begins. - Oliver WendellHolmes

The big debate in politics is, and has always been, about the appropriate size and role of government. The polarized state of todays debate is exemplified by Fox Newss overly strident critiques of seemingly any government solutions to shared problems, and MSNBCs apparent defense of activist government in many areas of life through their ongoing series of lean forward blurbs featuring their star TV personalities. These two relatively new TV channels also exemplify the growth of separate spheres of facts and opinions, or filter bubbles, enjoyed by those on the left and right, which is itself a majorproblem.

TamHunt

Fortunately, a new approach to this perennial debate is emerging, which marries the best of left and right. This new approach arises from the increasing power of networked and crowd-sourced solutions to many of the collective problems we face in todays world. The rise of crowd-sourced solutions is, in turn, based on our new tech-based society, in which information is rapidly becoming free and access to that free information is rapidly becominguniversal.

There is a risk in naming this new approach to political philosophy, but some have suggested peer progressivism or progressive libertarianism. I have also used the term wiki democracy to describe the outcome of this new philosophy and these new tech tools that are rapidly enhancing our democracies around theworld.

Im going to use the term isocracy, however, in this essay because it lacks the freight of the other labels mentioned. Isocracy means rule by equals, which pretty much sums up the gist of this new political philosophy. What to many people sound like contradictory philosophies (progressivism and libertarianism) come together under this new approach. Isocrats believe in small government, but also that were all in this together and we should help others where wecan.

This really is a new political philosophy because it rests on truly new technological tools. As our technological tools change so should our politics and ourphilosophies.

The basic idea of isocracy is that a lot of things that government has often done can and should be crowd-sourced that is, performed by the crowd, the masses, rather than by government or corporations. This is different than the historically right-wing tendency to want to privatize government, but it is nonetheless a type of privatization. Rather than privatizing by selling off government assets and responsibilities to corporations, however, crowd-sourcing looks to a broader universe of entities than just traditional corporate interests to take the place of traditional government. Crowd-sourcing generally relies on regular people like me and you, but it can include a variety of entities as part of the crowd, including individuals, civic groups, corporations, and government entities, all working together to find creative and efficient solutions. We are increasingly crowd-sourcing government and we should be actively looking for ways to accelerate thistrend.

An innocuous but useful example: Boston pioneered the adopt a fire hydrant program, which allows any individual, business, or community group to adopt a fire hydrant and ensure that it remains accessible to firefighters in winter by shoveling snow after a storm. This saves firefighters the trouble of doing this themselves, on a city-wide basis. Chicago, Buenos Aires, and Honolulu (for tsunami sirens instead of hydrants) have followedsuit.

Ayn Rand Was NOT a Libertarian

Many people assume that Ayn Rand was a champion of libertarian thought.

All kinds of people today call themselves libertarians, especially something calling itself the New Right, which consists of hippies, except that theyre anarchists instead of collectivists. But of course, anarchists are collectivists. Capitalism is the one system that requires absolute objective law, yet they want to combine capitalism and anarchism. That is worse than anything the New Left has proposed. Its a mockery of philosophy and ideology. They sling slogans and try to ride on two bandwagons. They want to be hippies, but dont want to preach collectivism, because those jobs are already taken. But anarchism is a logical outgrowth of the anti-intellectual side of collectivism. I could deal with a Marxist with a greater chance of reaching some kind of understanding, and with much greater respect. The anarchist is the scum of the intellectual world of the left, which has given them up. So the right picks up another leftist discard. Thats the Libertarian movement.

***

Id rather vote for Bob Hope, the Marx Brothers, or Jerry Lewis [than a candidate from the Libertarian Party].

***

[The Libertarian Party is] a cheap attempt at publicity, which Libertarians wont get. Todays events, particularly Watergate, should teach anyone with amateur political notions that they cannot rush into politics in order to get publicity. The issue is so serious today, that to form a new party based in part on half-baked ideas, and in part on borrowed ideasI wont say from whomis irresponsible, and in todays context, nearly immoral.

China Passes New Law to Patrol South China Sea – Video

China Passes New Law to Patrol South China Sea
On Tuesday, China gave new rights to its maritime patrollers to stop and search incoming vessels in the South China Sea. Disputed territory in the South China Sea is claimed by several nations, but China asserts that it has a sovereign right to patrol these waters. The law gives police in the island province of Hainan the right to "board, seize, and expel foreign ships illegally entering the province #39;s sea areas." The Chinese regime says it #39;s preventing foreign vessels from landing on disputed islands, damaging coastal defense facilities and "carrying out publicity campaigns that may threaten national security." The South China Sea has vast reserves of oil and gas, and contains some of the world #39;s busiest shipping lanes. Conflicts over the resource rich territory have been fierce. The Philippines, Vietnam, Brunei, Malaysia, and Taiwan all lay claim to a portion of the South China Sea. Palestine celebrates UN vote recognition – Video

Palestine celebrates UN vote recognition
The United Nations last night recognised a sovereign state of Palestine for the first time, sparking jubilation in the General Assembly and celebrations long into the night in Jerusalem. The UN overwhelmingly ignored dire warnings from the United States and Israel that the decision would wreck peace talks and lead to the severance of badly needed aid funding. An historic resolution that enhanced the Palestinians #39; position at the UN from "permanent observer" to "non-member observer state", a status also held by the Vatican, passed the General Assembly by a resounding 138 votes to 9, with 41 countries abstaining, including Britain. Five nations did not register a vote. The no votes were US, Israel, Canada, Czech Republic, Palau, Panama, Nauru, Mirconesia and Marshall Islands.
