11/30/2012 The US Navy has executed the first launch of a stealth drone set to be the first robot aircraft piloted by artificial intelligence. The "killer robot" might be the next step in the development of machines with the power to decide who lives or dies. Landing on a flight deck just might be the most difficult thing a naval pilot can do. But if the United States Navy has its way, it might be an operation no pilot ever has to complete again. After five-years in the making, the X-47B Unmanned Combat Air System (UCAS) demonstrator completed its first land-based catapult launch, "marking the start for a new era of naval aviation," the navy announced on Thursday. With a wingspan of 62-feet (18.9m), the subsonic drone will be the first tailless aircraft ever to land on a carrier. "The X-47B shore-based catapult launch we witnessed here today will leave a mark in history," the navy quotes Vice Adm. David Dunaway, NAVAIR commander, as saying. "We are working toward the future integration of unmanned aircraft on the carrier deck, something we didn #39;t envision 60 years ago when the steam catapult was first built here," he continued. Engineers had originally planned 50 test flights from the X-47B, but after performing beyond expectations, they stopped after 16 trials. Designers study human brain, neuron actions

It goes without saying that the human brain is complex, and would be hard to build from scratch. But researchers are looking to simulate how the brain works so that more human-like artificial intelligence can be created and we can better understand damage to our own brains.

Chris Eliasmith of the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada, led research published in the journal Science on a brain model called SPAUN - the Semantic Pointer Architecture Unified Network.

SPAUN lives inside a computer, can view images with a camera-like eye and can draw responses to questions. For example, show it the number "4" and it will write its own "4." It can even mimic the style of the numeral.

Both in the brain and in SPAUN, neurons communicate by changing their voltages, and the pattern of these voltage "spikes" is what carries information from one cell to another, Eliasmith said. The receiving cell generates a voltage of its own if it receives a particular voltage.

SPAUN has 2.5 million spiking neurons. Neurons are the cells - the individual components - that make up the brain. The human brain has about 100 billion neurons, so there's still a long way to go in terms of replicating its full capacity.

It's hard to compare SPAUN to any existing animal. Monkeys can do more general recognition than what this model does, Eliasmith said. But there are tasks SPAUN does that, until now, it was thought only humans could do.

"It's not as smart as monkeys when it comes to categorization, but it's actually smarter than monkeys when it comes to recognizing syntactic patterns, structured patterns in the input, that monkeys won't recognize," Eliasmith said.

All of SPAUN's tasks involve numbers. For instance, give it the pattern: 1, 11, 111; 3, 33, 333; 4, 44, _____." SPAUN could fill in the blank as 444.

"That's actually part of an intelligence test, realizing that everything is increasing by one," Eliasmith said. "Monkeys actually won't figure that out."

Bennett Aerospace Uses Trained Insects to Detect Bedbugs

Smart Hound technology has the potential to redefine how consumers can monitor for and detect bedbugsbut if you want the ability to regularly scan for bedbugs, you have to tell Bennett Aerospace via their crowdsourcing campaign on IndieGoGo (www.indiegogo.com/SmartHound).

One concept is that the Smart Hound units and the associated cartridges could be used by consumers to scan their home, apartment complex, hotel, or office for any variety of pests. But consumers need to speak up now by contributing - and receiving a Perk like a tee-shirt or mug - while the IndieGoGo project is active to indicate that this technology is needed and desired.

We need to see a strong showing from the public on IndieGoGo, said Douglas Bennett, President of Bennett Aerospace. If we have 5,000 supporters, that is a clear indication that consumers want this capability. The downside to not having the technology as a direct-to-consumer offering is that the opportunity to use the technology on a routine basis will be limited to exterminators and potentially be much more expensive.

Smart Hound uses trained insects, Sensor Bugs, to detect the odors of interest, states Dr. Brandon Conover at Bennett Aerospace. This is technology that was originally funded by the USDA and DARPA [US Department of Defense]. Bennett Aerospace holds the rights to the intellectual property, which includes the training of invertebrates. The future business model is to allow consumers to have a Smart Hound hand-held unit in their homes and receive cartridges as needed.

Resurrection Again: The Morbid Anatomy Library Post-Hurricane Sandy

Yesterday, we at The Morbid Anatomy Library spent a long, long day putting the library back together after our very zealous pre-Hurricane Sandy preparations. Above are some images showing the progression of the library from TOTAL CHAOS to some element of order; there is still a bit of fine-tuning left to do, but the bulk of the clean up is now completed, books are sorted into their respective categories, and artifacts are back in their general designated area. The library should be completely back up and running sometime in the next few days.

Thanks SO very much to friends and fellow Observatorians Shannon Taggart and Ethan Gould (15th down), and my wonderful former intern Laetitia Barbier (10th down) for all of their support, moral and physical. And that shrine to Saint Florian will be built in short order, and that is a promise!
