From 2000 to 2006 Leon Drolet served in the Michigan House of Representatives. He is chair of the Michigan Taxpayer #39;s Alliance, and was recently County Commissioner for Macomb County, Michigan (from 1999 to 2000). He was also Treasurer of Michigan Recalls who sought the recalls of several state legislators for their vote in favor of a tax increase during Michigan #39;s spending crisis in 2007. In 2008 he spearheaded an effort by the recall Michigan Speaker of the Michigan house Andy Dillon. While Dillon survived November #39;s recall vote, the effort put Michigan #39;s lawmakers on notice. They now know that any tax increase will be noticed, and there will be political consequences. In the 2006 election he acted as state-wide Chair of the successful Michigan Civil Rights Initiative (MCRI). The Libertarian Party of Michigan was the only party to endorse the initiative. The MCRI used the petition process to place a state constitutional amendment (Proposal 2 of November, 2006) before voters that prohibits governments in Michigan from discriminating against, or giving preferential treatment to, any citizen on the basis of race, gender, ethnicity or national origin in the operation of government hiring, contracting, or state university admissions. The amendment was approved by 58% of voters despite the fact that proponents were heavily outspent in the campaign by opponents who supported race-based government preference programs. 2008 Defender of Liberty Awards Defender of Liberty Awards ("Libbies") have been presented at our annual LibertyFest Banquet to a maximum of four select individuals, Libertarian or otherwise, who have made notable personal efforts in the defense of liberty. Winners must live and/or work in the state of Michigan. Three categories have been established: Spokesperson for Liberty - a member of the community whose patriotism and conviction have inspired contributions to the cause of Liberty Promoter of Liberty - A Libertarian whose efforts have done the most to promote the LP and Libertarian principles Producer of Liberty - a dedicated, behind-the-scenes Libertarian whose quiet labors over the years exemplifies the backbone of the LP. A fourth award is available to be given at the judge #39;s discretion. The Libertarian Party of Michigan #39;s annual Liberty Fest banquet, which was organized by the LP of Wayne County, was held Saturday night, January 24 at Dimitri #39;s on the Avenue in Dearborn. 26 November 2012Australias approach to retirement incomes policy has three pillars: the means-tested age pension; compulsory superannuation; and voluntary saving, including saving via superannuation over and above that mandated by the superannuation guarantee. This paper examines the economic case for compulsory superannuation contributions and questions whether compulsory super is the most effective way of promoting household and national saving and reducing future demands on the federal budget from an ageing population when compared to alternative policy options. Most of the economic arguments for compulsory superannuation are second-best arguments made on the assumption that first-best outcomes are unattainable.

There is considerable scope for public policy to address adverse interactions between the three pillars, the tax system and public expenditure that will increase voluntary saving, improve retirement incomes and reduce future demands on the budget without relying on further increases in compulsory superannuation contributions. The paper recommends a shift in compulsion from the accumulation to the decumulation stage of retirement saving through the mandatory annuitisation of superannuation benefits. The second and third pillars of retirement incomes policy should be merged into a single pillar based on a politically robust regime of tax-advantaged long-term voluntary saving via housing and superannuation.

Is there a Libertarian position on same-sex marriage?

The legality of same-sex marriage has long been a contention between liberal and conservatives, but its also a source of division among libertarians. As I dug into the original thoughts of libertarianism and classical liberalism, I discovered that the legitimacy of same-sex marriage should never have been a concern of libertarians in the first place.

Instead, whether government should be playing a role in defining and recognizing marriage is the more important issue with which libertarians should be concerned.

Murray N. Rothbard lays out the framework of libertarian theory in his book For a New Liberty: The Libertarian Manifesto. Libertarian theories all rest on a so called nonaggression axiom: that no man or group of men may aggress the person or property of anyone else.

Aggression is defined as the initiation of the use or threat of physical violence against the person or property of anyone else. Libertarians believe that a man has a right to do whatever he wants as long as he doesnt infringe other peoples rights. But if he does, hes subject to legal repercussions.

Armed with this axiom, its very unlikely that libertarian fall into either the liberal or conservative category when it comes to same-sex marriage. Both of their positions are considered aggression because they try to get government involved in defining or redefining marriage.

If marriage (or civil unions, domestic partnerships, etc.) fits the nonaggression axiom, which doesnt violate other peoples rights, why is it polarizing the nation? Superficially, gay marriage might seem to be a religious or moral issue but the reality is much different.

Income taxes and other marriage benefits from the government are the real face behind the veil of the same-sex marriage contention. In a regressive system of income tax, married couples pay less in income taxes when they file jointly than if they do it separately. Its because their income as a whole falls into a bracket that allows them to pay less.

According to Tax Policy Center, tax legislation since 2001 has substantially increased marriage bonuses by raising the standard deduction for couples to twice that for single filers, and by setting the income ranges of the 10 and 15 percent tax brackets for couples to twice the corresponding ranges for individuals. Legislation also raised the starting point for the earned income tax credit phase-out range by $3,000 for married couples.

Its easy to see why gay Americans are fighting for the right to marry not only for love, but largely because of the tax incentive of marriage recognized by the government. If government keeps its hands off marriage and lets it become an affair among private institutions by eliminating all the tax breaks and benefits for couples that fall in governments definition of marriage, then same-sex marriage issue wouldnt be a heated issue on any legislative agenda.

Dear Editor:

It is truly amazing how ignorant most people are of basic economics. A case in point would be the outrage over increased gas prices in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. Price gouging by service stations was the battle cry of politicians and journalists who foster the economic ignorance of the general population.

What is called price gouging is in fact a basic market mechanism to limit demand in times of shortage. If gas stations had kept their prices at pre-Sandy levels, there would have been even more of a mob scene at the pumps than there was. By allowing prices to rise, the marketplace limits demand and ensures a continued supply. Isnt it better to temporarily pay more for something and know it will be there or be "protected" by government price controls than either run out or have it rationed by some bureaucrat?

Our corpulent governor, Mr. Christie, who is supposed to be a Conservative Republican, is evidently as ignorant of the free market and how it is supposed to function as many in the media are.

The gas in the tanks at any station is the property of the owners and they should be able to sell it at any price they choose; it doesnt belong to society or the public. In a free society all economic exchanges, just like all personal social interactions, must be based on voluntary consent by all participants. The alternative is a collectivized "command" economy, also known as socialism or fascism.

In times of natural disasters there is nothing wrong with people helping others, provided it is done privately and voluntarily. Forced giving or sharing by government edict can never be justified; it is theft pure and simple!

While one can feel sympathy toward those who lost oceanfront homes at the Jersey Shore, lets remember that most of those homes wouldnt have been built there were it not for Federal Flood Insurance. So you see, government to a certain extent helped create this situation, proving once again what we Libertarians have known for years: "Government isnt the solution; its the problem!"

Time is 11:42:xx -- Streamed live at twitch.tv/bosscrab TwitchTV Highlight: http://www.twitch.tv/bosscrab/c/1758410 The major timesaver in this run over the previous record was a 3-cycle fight with Lololo Lalala, which is optimal, very difficult, and very rare. I appear to lose time on the Boss Rush but that #39;s just because my PB split there was inaccurate, I hit it pretty early in the PB. More time could be saved with better luck on Whispy Woods, Kracko 1, Dedede, and better play in general, specifically at Float Islands and Bubbly Clouds. I made a couple of pretty bad mistakes. There #39;s a random skip in the video at around 8:49-8:50 on the timer (8:56 in the video). I honestly don #39;t know why this is here. It #39;s in every saved version of the run so I #39;m not sure what happened with the stream there. However, the time in the timer does progress a full second during this skip and the position of Kirby is consistent with that time. Sound appears to desync at the end too.
