Earth Gamma Ray Blasters – Video

Earth Gamma Ray Blasters
From NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. NASA #39;s Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope has been catching brief outbursts of high-energy light that are mysteriously produced above thunderstorms. The outbursts, known as terrestrial gamma-ray flashes (TGFs), last only a few thousandths of a second, but their gamma rays rank among the highest-energy light that naturally occurs on Earth. The enhanced GBM discovery rate helped scientists show most TGFs also generate a strong burst of radio waves, a finding that will change how scientists study this poorly understood phenomenon. Lightning emits a broad range of very low frequency (VLF) radio waves, often heard as pop-and-crackle static when listening to AM radio. The World Wide Lightning Location Network (WWLLN), researchers routinely detect these radio signals and use them to pinpoint the location of lightning discharges anywhere on the globe to within about 20 km. Scientists have known for a long time TGFs were linked to strong VLF bursts, but they interpreted these signals as originating from lightning strokes somehow associated with the gamma-ray emission. The researchers identified much weaker radio bursts that occur up to several thousandths of a second before or after a TGF. They interpret these signals as intracloud lightning strokes related to, but not created by, the gamma-ray flash. Scientists suspect TGFs arise from the strong electric fields near the tops of thunderstorms. Under certain conditions, the field becomes strong ...From:SpaceRipViews:306 124ratingsTime:04:01More inScience Technology

NASA compiles Typhoon Bopha's Philippines Rainfall totals from space

( NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center ) NASA's Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission, or TRMM satellite can estimate rainfall rates from its orbit in space, and its data is also used to compile estimated rainfall totals. NASA just released an image showing those rainfall totals over the Philippines, where severe flooding killed several hundred people. Bopha is now a tropical storm in the South China ...

AGU 2012 Fall Meeting: Science

AGU 2012 Fall Meeting: Science Technology at Extreme Depths, with James Cameron
Science Technology at Extreme Depths, with James Cameron and DEEPSEA CHALLENGE Scientists Tuesday, 4 December 2:30 pm Journalists can follow up on special session U22C with questions for James Cameron and three scientists from the DEEPSEA CHALLENGE Expedition. The panel will discuss the sub #39;s innovative design as well as preliminary scientific findings including identification of new species and discovery of deepest example to date of gigantism in deep-sea animals. Along with a team of scientists and engineers, Cameron co-designed the submersible in which he became the first person to descend alone to the Earth #39;s deepest known point. The expedition included multiple sub dives to explore the New Britain and Mariana Trenches where it collected video footage of unprecedented clarity, physical oceanographic data, water samples, biological samples and sediment. Participants: James Cameron, Expedition Leader, DEEPSEA CHALLENGE; Chairman, Blue Planet Marine Research Foundation; Explorer-In-Residence, National Geographic Society, Washington, DC, USA; Douglas Bartlett, Professor of Marine Microbial Genetics, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UCSD, La Jolla, California, USA; Patricia Fryer, Professor, Hawaii Institute of Geophysics Planetology, University of Hawaii, Honolulu, Hawaii, USA; Kevin Hand, Deputy Chief Scientist, Solar System Exploration, NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, California, USA. ISS Update: NBL Orion Flight Lead Tim Goddard
NASA Public Affairs Officer Brandi Dean talks with Tim Goddard, Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory (NBL) Orion Flight Lead, about how the NBL is used to train rescue and recovery personnel for future Orion missions. The NBL is basically a giant swimming pool that NASA team members use to develop flight procedures, verify hardware compatibility, train astronauts and refine spacewalk procedures during flight that are necessary to ensure mission success. The NBL is currently being used to train rescue and recovery personnel for Orion capsule water recovery operations. Questions?
