Sir Patrick Alfred Caldwell-Moore, CBE, FRS, FRAS (4th March 1923 - 9th December 2012) was an English amateur astronomer who attained prominent status in that field as a writer, researcher, radio commentator and television presenter. Moore was a former president of the British Astronomical Association, co-founder and former president of the Society for Popular Astronomy (SPA), author of over 70 books on astronomy, and presenter of the world #39;s longest-running television series with the same original presenter, The Sky at Night on the BBC. This video shows a new rotating dilution refrigerator that has been built in the School of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Manchester. The cryostat can cool experiments to 0.01 degrees above absolute zero (-273 deg C). The instrument consists of two rotating carousels. The upper carousel houses the pumps and gas handling system. The dilution refrigerator (and experimental cell) are mounted below the lower carousel. The dilution refrigerator and gas handling system were built by Oxford Instruments. The project is funded by EPSRC. We are using this new instrument to probe quantum turbulence in superfluid helium in the limit of zero temperature. British astronomer and broadcaster Patrick Moore died Sunday, according to friends and colleagues. He was 89. He died at his home in the coastal town of Selsey in southern England, according to a statement released Sunday. No specific cause of death was given, but he had heart problems and been confined to a wheelchair. Moore was well known for his long-running BBC television show "The Sky at Night," which was credited for popularizing astronomy with generations of Britons. He had presented the show for more than half a century. The statement said he was briefly hospitalized last week when it was determined no more treatment would help him. Instead, his wish to spend his final days at home were honored. "Over the past few years, Patrick, an inspiration to generations of astronomers, fought his way back from many serious spells of illness and continued to work and write at a great rate, but this time his body was too weak to overcome the infection which set in a few weeks ago," the statement said. It was signed by various staff members and friends, including Queen guitarist Brian May. May said Moore was irreplaceable and had stirred millions through his broadcasts. British astronomer Patrick Moore dies at age 89
Sir Patrick Alfred Caldwell-Moore,known publicly as Patrick Moore,astronomer and 55-year host of the BBC astronomy series The Sky at Night, passed away in his home on Sunday, at the age of 89.
An enthusiastic astronomer since the age of six, Moore was running a small observatory by age 14. After serving in World War II, he wrote his first astronomy book - titled Guide to the Moon - in 1952, and would go on to write or co-write over 300 books (counting multiple editions and languages pushes that number up over 1000), according to Astronomy Now. At the age of 31, after participating in a 1950 televised debate opposite several proponents of UFO sightings, including former RAF Air Chief Marshal Hugh Dowding, he was offered the chance to host his own astronomy show. The Sky at Night first aired on April 26, 1957, and in the over 55 years since then, he has only missed one episode (July 2004), due to suffering through a near-fatal case of food poisoning. With a total of 705 episodes, and him hosting 704 of those, the Guinness Book of World Records lists The Sky at Night as the 'Longest Running TV Show with the Same Presenter', and Moore as the 'Most Durable TV Presenter'.

Despite some rather 'colourful' political and social opinions including his support of the Official Monster Raving Loony Party Moore was beloved by the British people. He was generous to a fault, especially to young astronomers, several of whom he supported through gifts of equipment and sponsorship through university. Also, perhaps in typical British fashion, Moore employed satire and wit to poke fun at various groups, penning the book Bureaucrats: How to Annoy Them under a pseudonym, and (apparently) anonymously co-writing A Flying Saucer from Mars which was a parody of the UFO phenomenon.

Also, although he only referred to himself as an 'amateur' astronomer, he made several important contributions to the science.
He made extensive observations and maps of the Moon, and was particularly interested in its far side. Although the Moon is 'tidally-locked' to Earth, so we only see one side of it, since the Moon's orbit is both elliptical and at a slight angle relative to the Earth's equator, the Moon seems to oscillate. This is called lunar libration, and because of this, we can see the edges of the far side (a little under 10 per cent of its surface area). Due to his dedication to lunar observation, Moore was granted permission by the Russians to air pictures from their Luna 3 probe on his show.
In 1995 he published the Caldwell Catalogue,a list of 109 astronomical objects visible in the night sky, to address issues of missing objects and a bias towards the northern hemisphere he saw in the popularMessier Catalgue. Also, unlike the Messier Catalogue, which lists objects in the order they were discovered, Moore organized the objects in his catalogue from northernmost to southernmost. The Caldwell Catalogue is now one of three references, along with the Messier Catalogue and the Herschel 400 Catalogue,used extensively by backyard astronomers in their viewing of the night sky.

Moore had received numerous honours in his lifetime, including being made an officer of the Order of the British Empire, becoming the honorary president of the East Sussex Astronomical Society, being knighted for 'services to the popularization of science and to broadcasting', and becoming the only amateur astronomer ever appointed as an Honourary Fellow of the Royal Society, which, according to his close friend, Queen guitarist and astrophysicistBrian May, was the honour he was most proud of.

Sir Patrick Moore, British Astronomy Missionary, Dies at 89
The famous British astronomer Sir Patrick Moore, who inspired a love of science in many through his BBC television program "The Sky At Night," died at age 89 on Sunday (Dec. 9).
Moore "passed away peacefully"at his home in West Sussex, England, according to the BBC. His night-sky program, which began airing in 1957 and ran its last episode the night he died, is the longest-running television show of all time. Moore was also the author of more than 70 books on astronomy geared toward lay readers.
Many scientists credit Moore and the show for inspiring them to pursue the careers they chose.
"The first book on the cosmos I ever read was written by SirPatrick Moore. May he rest in peace, somewhere in the universe," astronomer Neil deGrasse Tyson, director of the American Museum of Natural History's Hayden Planetarium, wrote on Twitter Sunday.
Moore was born in Middlesex, England in 1923 and served in the Royal Air Force during World War II. He was largely self-taught, and turned down a chance to study at Cambridge University under a government grant. At age 11, he joined the British Astronomical Association, and at age 14 he took over the running of a small observatory near his house. [Gallery: December 2012 Night Sky]
"How many people bought their first telescope thanks toPatrick Moore?" British entrepreneur Sir Richard Branson, founder of the Virgin Galactic commercial spaceflight company, wrote on Twitter Sunday.
"His passion, knowledge and humour made him truly unique," Branson added.
Yet Moore was also a divisive person. He made misogynistic, anti-gay and anti-immigrant comments publicly, and alienated many whom he had inspired.
"He was a controversial figure, beloved for his science promotion, but who also made comments that were pretty objectionable," astronomer Phil Plait, author of the blog "Bad Astronomy," wrote on Google Plus. "In my opinion, it is not only fair but also necessary to praise the achievements of the recently deceased as well as point out their flaws so that we may learn from them."
Ultimately, Moore made an indelible mark on the world of astronomy. He was sometimes referred to as the "British Carl Sagan," though his reach spread far beyond the United Kingdom.
