Ameresco Completes First Phase of Energy Savings Program with NASA Wallops Flight Facility
FRAMINGHAM, Mass. & WALLOPS ISLAND, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--
Ameresco, Inc. (AMRC), a leading energy efficiency and renewable energy company, today announced the completion of the first phase of a $28 million energy savings project with NASA Goddard Space Flight Centers Wallops Flight Facility, located on Virginias eastern shore. The Wallops Flight Facility is NASAs principal facility for the management and implementation of suborbital research programs. As part of the $15 million first phase of the facility-wide project, Ameresco installed high efficiency lighting, decentralized an antiquated steam plant by installing a propane distribution system with over 60 building-level condensing boilers, and upgraded and expanded an existing energy management control system (EMCS).
Performed under the Department of Energy (DOE) Energy Savings Performance Contract (ESPC) Program, which is under one of Amerescos federal indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity (IDIQ) contracting vehicles, the first phase is projected to reduce energy intensity by 35 percent. To support the Wallops Mission Plan and NASAs overall effort to reduce energy consumption and improve aging infrastructure, Ameresco is currently engaged in building and deploying a $13 million second phase to the energy savings project. The scope includes a geothermal energy efficiency project at the site that is projected for completion in 2013.
The energy savings performance contract with Ameresco brought major improvements to Wallops Flight Facility, said Philip Smith, Energy Manager for the Wallops Flight Facility. Financed entirely by energy conservation, the project has additional side-benefits in operations and maintenance cost savings, air emissions reduction, fuel tank compliance, and water conservation savings. This effort will single-handedly satisfy Wallops federal energy reduction requirements beyond the horizon of all existing legislation and it contributes significantly to help to refresh aging infrastructure.
During the first phase of the energy savings program, Ameresco worked with Wallops to replace the central plant fuel-oil fired boilers with high-efficiency, propane-fired condensing boilers while installing over five miles of new underground propane gas piping. As part of the ESPC, more than 9,950 interior and exterior lighting fixtures were replaced with higher efficiency units and technologies. Ameresco also upgraded and expanded the existing energy management control system in 14 buildings and interconnected newly installed gas meters to the EMCS.

As part of its ESPC work with Ameresco, Wallops is expected to save over 77,000 million BTUs a year. In addition, greenhouse gas emissions are expected to be reduced by more than 8,600 metric tons, which is equivalent to the GHG emissions of approximately 1,700 passenger vehicles.

NASA photo error puts Everest in India
The world's highest mountain should not be hard to spot but American space agency NASA has admitted it mistook a summit in India for Mount Everest, which straddles the border of Nepal and China.
The agency said on its website that Russian cosmonaut Yuri Malenchenko's snap from the International Space Station, 230 miles (370 kilometres) above Earth, showed Everest lightly dusted with snow.
The picture spread rapidly via Twitter and was picked up by media around the world, including the US-based magazine The Atlantic, astronomy website Space.com and US cable news channel MSNBC.
But Nepalis smelt a rat and voiced their suspicions on social media. Journalist Kunda Dixit, an authority on the Himalayas, tweeted: "Sorry guys, but the tall peak with the shadow in the middle is not Mt Everest."
NASA confirmed on Thursday that it had made a mistake and removed the picture from its website.
"It is not Everest. It is Saser Muztagh, in the Karakoram Range of the Kashmir region of India," a spokesman admitted in an email to AFP.
"The view is in mid-afternoon light looking northeastward."
He did not explain how the picture from the space station, a joint project of the US, Russia, Japan, Canada and Europe, had been wrongly identified.
Everest, which is 8,848 metres (29,028 feet) high, is a sought-after photographic target for astronauts in orbit but is tricky to capture, according to astronaut Ron Garan, who lived on the International Space Station last year.
"No time is allotted in our work day normally for Earth pictures. So if we want to capture a specific point on the ground we have to first know exactly when we will fly over that spot," he told The Atlantic.

NASA releases ‘Told Ya So’ apocalypse video early
Dec. 21, 2012, has long been rumored to be the day of the Mayan apocalypse, when Earth comes to its inglorious end. The good folks at NASA want you to know that isn't going to happen.
In fact, NASA is so confident that it recently published a video that appears as if it were intended to be aired on Dec. 22. Titled "The World Didn't End Yesterday," the four-minute clip explains how the idea of the Mayan apocalypse was a huge hoax and how the rumors began. A commenter on YouTube jokes, "The correct title for this video: Told ya so!Love, NASA."
Time magazine reports that the space agency has been besieged with questions from citizens worried that their lives are about to end. NASA is taking the fears seriously, not because there is any danger, but because irrational fears can sometimes lead to irrational and dangerous actions.

NASA's official site features an area dedicated to debunking the claims. "The world will not end in 2012," NASA writes. "Our planet has been getting along just fine for more than 4 billion years, and credible scientists worldwide know of no threat associated with 2012."
NASA experts go on to explain the origins of the hoax. "The story started with claims that Nibiru, a supposed planet discovered by the Sumerians, is headed toward Earth. This catastrophe was initially predicted for May 2003, but when nothing happened the doomsday date was moved forward to December 2012 and linked to the end of one of the cycles in the ancient Mayan calendar at the winter solstice in 2012hence the predicted doomsday date of Dec. 21, 2012."
Nibiru, by the way, is not a real planet. If it were, NASA says the agency "would have been tracking it for at least the past decade, and it would be visible by now to the naked eye."
Translation: The world isn't going to end. You still have to finish your holiday shopping. You still have to come up with something fun to do on New Year's Eve. Sorry.
