This video was uploaded on the 40th anniversary of the last people leaving the lunar surface. The footage was recorded in Orbiter Space Flight Simulator and the audio is from NASA. 40 years ago, in December of 1972, NASA sent the last people to the moon. They were Eugene Cernan (Commander), Harrison Schmitt (Lunar Module Pilot), and Ronald Evans (Command Module Pilot). The audio is Gene Cernan #39;s final words before stepping off the lunar surface for the last time. After three explorations of the surface, or EVAs, the crew returned to lunar module Challenger to leave the moon. Cernan #39;s speech: "Bob, this is Gene, and I #39;m on the surface; and, as I take man #39;s last step from the surface, back home for some time to come - but we believe not too long into the future - I #39;d like to just (say) what I believe history will record. That America #39;s challenge of today has forged man #39;s destiny of tomorrow. And, as we leave the Moon at Taurus-Littrow, we leave as we came and, God willing, as we shall return, with peace and hope for all mankind. This video shows meteors captured by a wide-field camera at the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center on the night of December 12. There are 141 events; at least 77 of these are Geminids, based on their angular speed and direction of travel. Near the end of the movie, a couple of satellites are visible crossing the field of view. December 13, into the early morning of December 14 is the peak. Flaring brighter than the full moon, this spectacular Geminid lit up the sky above Cartersville, Ga., at 2:29 am EST on the morning of Dec. 14. The issue with Dec. 21, 2012 and the predicted disasters that some folks think will come, probably started with the so-called end of the Mayan calendar. Their calendar does not end on Dec. 21, 2012. It #39;s just the end of the cycle and the beginning of a new one. It #39;s just like on Dec. 31st, our calendar comes to an end but a new calendar for the next year begins on Jan. 1st. Niburu is suppose to be a planet that #39;s four times the size of the Earth. It #39;s going to get very close to the Earth and cause all kinds of disasters. So this enormous planet is suppose to be coming toward Earth, but if it were, we would #39;ve seen it long ago and if it were invisible somehow, we would #39;ve seen the affects of this planet on neighboring planets. Thousands of astronomers who scan the night skies on a daily basis have not seen this. And then there #39;s folks who think that NASA astronomers are actually hiding this information so as to prevent panic from the populous. Can you imagine thousands of astronomers who observe the skies on a nightly basis keeping the same secret from the public for several years? Some folks think there #39;s going to be a solar storm associated with Dec. 21st of 2012. Now, solar storms do exist. The sun #39;s activity goes through a cycle that reaches a maximum every eleven years. The next solar maximum when you might expect enhanced solar activity will take place actually in May of 2013. NASA Employees Share Inspiring Stories You've Never Heard

It has been 50 years since NASA's Mariner 2 spacecraft traveled 36 million miles to Venus for the first-ever close-up view of another planet.

This is a big milestone. Not only did that mission mark the beginning of interstellar exploration, but it also came at a time when morale was low: The U.S. hadn't truly had a space "first" in five years. Meanwhile, as America's space program stood stagnant, the Soviet Union continued to advance its efforts in space.

NASA recently released an online interactive map where you can relive this milestone and other big moments in space exploration, from 1962 through Curiosity's landing this year.

We all probably remember the major space headlines, but what about the cool stuff that we didn't hear about? What were NASA employees' favorite memories? Mashable asked five Jet Propulsion Laboratory workers to share the space moments they will never forget. Here are their stories in their own words.

Rob Manning, Chief Engineer, Mars Science Laboratory Mission

At 10:30 a.m. on the Fourth of July in 1997 at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., as head of the entry, descent and landing team and Chief Engineer, I was staring at a computer screen watching a series of dramatic events flip by that had been unfolding millions of miles away.

Mars Pathfinder, with the little Sojourner rover safely tucked inside, was landing on Mars. On my headset, I was straining to hear my colleagues on the other side of the Earth in Madrid who were watching analog displays showing signals from Mars via a massive dish antenna.

"I have all eyes watching," Sami Asmar says, only seconds after the time my display has predicted that the lander should be bouncing in its airbag cocoon. "We see a weak signal," he says. "A signal is barely visible!" I repeat it into my microphone while being watched by perhaps millions of people. I knew then that Pathfinder had run the gauntlet and had made a safe contact with the surface on another planet.
