Appeals court to examine O.C. sex offender ban from parks, beaches

The district attorney's office had successfully urged about 16 other cities in the county to adopt versions of the ordinance. A state appellate court has agreed to review Orange County's controversial law barring sex offenders from county parks and beaches, a move that may determine whether the ban — and other ordinances modeled after it — are legal.

South-east Qld beaches feel ex-cyclone fallout

The weather bureau is warning of dangerous surf on exposed beaches across south-east Queensland over the next few days.

Forecaster Sam Campbell says conditions will be rough on exposed beaches between Fraser Island and Coolangatta for the next few days.

Mr Campbell says the powerful surf is being whipped up by ex-tropical cyclone Evan which battered Fiji earlier this week.

He says conditions will be rough and swimmers need to take extra care over the weekend.

"We're expecting powerful surf to develop about the south-east coast," he said.

"That's in the waters south of Fraser Island, so we're going to see an easterly swell at 1.5 to two metres.

"It is quite a long period swell, so that means the waves have more energy than they normally do.

"When they come in and break on the shore, they will have a fair bit of energy and conditions could be a bit rough on the actual beaches, particularly exposed beaches."

Gold Coast chief lifeguard Warren Young says there could be a swell of up to two metres today and tomorrow.

He is urging swimmers, particularly those with children, to speak to authorities before entering the water.

This is my third and final recording for Advent 2012. The setting is for for 4 Horns and is intended to be performed in a large, reverberant space. The video combines the candles and wreaths of advent and the horn the music was performed on with a group of pictures of space from the NASA astronomy picture of the day website. The recording was done in the Hermitage which is not exactly a large space (main room is about 10 #39;x12 #39; with 4 small alcoves). The reverberation was added by recording each horn track with 4 microphones, front, rear, left, and right. Each of these channels was fed into an appropriate convolution reverb in the PerfectSpace plugin. A time delay appropriate to the distance the sound had to travel to reach the first surface was added in. In addition, the front channel was mixed in dry. So each horn used 4 or 5 tracks. Or it might be a fucked-up dystopian nightmare. Where artificial intelligence has surpassed that of it #39;s creators. Or perhaps humans have ravaged the Earth to such a degree that it has gone into full revolt. Or A scarcity of resources has humans warring over water. It depends on which film you watch or what time of day you might have asked Stanley Kubrick #39;s opinion. Eclectic Method has supercut some of our favorite scenes from movies that turn a predictive eye to the future. Blade Runner #39;s Megacities alongside AI #39;s flooded New York and Idiocracy #39;s run down shanty towns. Some technology predictions in these films have already proven to be accurate and some are still a ways off - or not! ... cameras on every corner, oil shortages, massive cultural uprisings in the middle east, retinal scans, X-Rays, flying cars and hoverboards, hybrid humans, robots, AI, teleportation and so on.
