Academy 1/144 panavia Tornado built log by sall
Academy 1/144 panavia Tornado built 6 of 12 By Sall The Panavia Tornado is a family of twin-engine, variable-sweep wing combat aircraft, which was jointly developed and manufactured by the United Kingdom, West Germany and Italy. There are three primary variants of the Tornado; the Tornado IDS (interdictor/strike) fighter-bomber, the suppression of enemy air defences Tornado ECR (electronic combat/reconnaissance) and the Tornado ADV (air defence variant) interceptor. The Tornado was developed and built by Panavia Aircraft GmbH, a tri-national consortium consisting of British Aerospace (previously British Aircraft Corporation), MBB of West Germany, and Aeritalia of Italy. It first flew on 14 August 1974 and was introduced into service in 1979--1980. Due to its multirole nature, it was able to replace several different fleets of aircraft in the adopting air forces. The Royal Saudi Air Force (RSAF) became an export operator of the Tornado in addition to the three original partner nations. A tri-nation training and evaluation unit operating from RAF Cottesmore, the Tri-National Tornado Training Establishment, maintained a level of international cooperation beyond the production stage. The Tornado was used by the Royal Air Force (RAF), Italian Air Force and Royal Saudi Air Force during the 1991 Gulf War, in which the Tornado conducted many low-altitude penetrating strike missions. The Tornados of various operators were also used in conflicts in the former Yugoslavia during the ...From:Sall M YViews:14 0ratingsTime:07:47More inHowto Style

Studio Rebuild #9: Some Analog Video Basics
While everything is out of the racks, a good opportunity to talk a bit about the Analog NTSC video signal. Using a patch panel to connect various signals to a Waveform Monitor, Vectorscope, and color monitor. Some basics of reading waveforms and vectors of standard color bars. I was trying a crazy head-mount for my cell phone. It works OK when I keep glancing at the display, but its hard to use both hands to show something, watch what you #39;re doing, talk and make sense (hopefully!) and pay attention to what the camera is seeing all at the same time. Mostly it worked. I #39;m sure there are TV engineers that might explain things a bit differenty, or might even disagree with my explanations. My intent is to just show what the equipment is and does. This equipment cost thousands of dollars back in the day, was built with practically aerospace quality, and is available for pennies on EBay. But most people don #39;t understand what it does or figure its obsolete and irrelevant. Especially some of the people selling it on EBay! But you do have to be very careful, you can end up paying a lot for a control panel but without the rackmount electronics and interconnect cables it takes to make it work! If they can #39;t sell it most sellers just send it to have the gold fingers cut off the circut cards and connectors and the rest gets chopped up and put into the landfill. To me, thats a crying shame! Thats why I hope by explaining some of this, I #39;ll spark some interest in this old gear! If you ...From:Dave SiegViews:0 0ratingsTime:13:53More inScience Technology

UTC Aerospace Systems Technology Supported Royal Navy's Successful Security Operations

CHARLOTTE, N.C., Dec. 21, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --UTC Aerospace Systems provided a number of Maritime Imagery Manipulation and Storage (MAInMAST) systems to the UK Royal Navy. This system is unique in its ability to provide accurate, near real-time threat analysis. MAInMAST, deployed by the Royal Navy in support of the Olympics, contributed to the successful provision of maritime security for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, allowing timely access to accurate intelligence and improved situational awareness. UTC Aerospace Systems is a unit of United Technologies Corp. (UTX)

At only the size of a standard briefcase and resembling a laptop, MAInMAST is housed in a server rack or in its own ruggedized case and can be deployed onboard a ship, land vehicle or a ground based facility. Accepting information from a variety of sensors, MAInMAST quickly transmits data using a live data link for immediate analysis and early, effective decision-making. Advanced electro-optic sensors such as those currently in use on Royal Navy helicopters send critical information to the system. Less critical information can be retrieved from the sensor's data brick as a helicopter returns to the ship.

The system software allows data collection directly from the operators' heads-up display. This 'screen-scrape', a new form of immediate information retrieval is then formed into a data packet and catalogued for subsequent storage and retrieval.

"This system, together with the UTC Aerospace Systems Merlin exploitation application software, has also created a highly effective reference library, enabling officials to track and show evidence of illicit activity; including terrorism, narcotics smuggling and piracy. The MAInMAST system stores data based on NATO standards held within a shared reference library, allowing information to be disseminated across wide-area networks or held in a central archive for future use," said Sam Macleod, managing director, ISR Systems.

UTC Aerospace Systems designs, manufactures and services integrated systems and components for the aerospace and defense industries. UTC Aerospace Systems supports a global customer base with significant worldwide manufacturing and customer service facilities.

United Technologies Corp., based in Hartford, Connecticut, is a diversified company providing high technology products and services to the building and aerospace industries.

Fitch: Global Aerospace/Defense – Commercial Growth and Near-term Defense Risks in 2013

NEW YORK & LONDON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

The outlook for the global Aerospace and Defense (A&D) sector is stable for 2013, with the largest parts of the commercial aerospace sector continuing to benefit from strong demand, while global defense budgets remain under pressure, according to Fitch Ratings in its outlook report.

Regionally, Europe could be a key credit focus in 2013, with several large players evaluating strategies and facing other challenges.

The broader story in the A&D sector includes challenges in commercial aerospace and opportunities in defense that temper the respective positive and negative storylines. Poor execution in the commercial segment could weaken the outlook, while cost cutting and international opportunities in defense could fend off credit pressures.

Outlook Summary:

-- Commercial Segments: Supported by strong orders and large backlogs, Fitch expects deliveries from Airbus and Boeing to grow approximately 8% in both 2013 and 2014, but deliveries could plateau in 2014. Key challenges include meeting higher production rates and keeping new programs on track. Aftermarket revenues should grow in the mid-single digits, and business jet and regional aircraft markets are likely to be stable, but at low levels.

-- Aircraft Finance: Fitch does not expect that availability of aircraft financing will be a limit on the commercial aerospace outlook in 2013, despite a likely 10% higher financing requirement. Commercial banks have remained active in the market, while new capital providers have also emerged. Capital markets activity should continue to rise in 2013.

-- U.S Defense: Sequestration is a near-term concern, but Fitch's expectation is that it will be avoided. However, additional defense spending reductions will likely be a part of any deal that avoids the fiscal cliff. While U.S. defense spending is past its peak, opportunities to cut costs and win international contracts should not be ignored. At some companies, cash deployment to offset lower growth rates is a credit risk.

-- European Defense: Fitch believes that defense spending levels in Europe have, for the most part, bottomed out, despite the on-going fiscal challenges facing the continent. Fitch does not expect materially different financial profiles in 2013, save any company specific events such as M&A or key program problems. In the aftermath of the terminated merger, the potential for strategic actions at EADS or BAE Systems is an issue to watch.

Sequestration or a similarly severe spending plan is the nearest term risk to Fitch's outlook, but it would likely not affect all ratings and Outlooks in the U.S. defense sector. In the commercial aerospace sector, cost overruns or material delays on new aircraft programs are the main risk to Fitch's outlook, but failed execution on production rate increases and the ongoing negotiations with Boeing's engineer's union are also key concerns.

"The Macabre and Little Known Sight of Saint Victoria of Rome" : A Mystery Revealed, Thanks to the BBC

Regular readers might remember the enigmatic and gorgeous Saint Victoria (or Saint Vittoria; seen above), a life-sized saint I stumbled upon in the church of Santa Maria della Vittoria directly across from Bernini's tourist-drawing Ecstasy of Saint Theresa on a recent trip to Rome. This rose-crowned and slashed-neck lady had caused me no little consternation; Was she waxwork? Effigy? Reliquary? Or some combination of the above? Sadly, churches do not have informational panels explaining such things, and I was left only to wonder as to her history and makeup.

Then, very recently, a few comments popped up on my blog from folks who had seen this mysterious figure discussed at length on the "Divine Gamble" episode of the new BBC TV series "Rome--A History of the Eternal City." I finally was able to locate a copy on You Tube and at about 12:47 minutes in, here is what I learned:

This figure, one of the cities least known but most macabre sights, appears to be a statue. But closer inspection reveals something far more spine chilling. When first you look at this, you think it must be a waxwork. But when you look a little closer, into the slightly open mouth you see, through the open lips of a skeleton. And if you look at the hands on the outside, they appear to be wax. But look inside. You can see not just the skeletal bones of the real hand of the human body but actually the dry skin there too. This is the body of Saint Victoria.

What the host does not mention explicitly is that it is, indeed, the body of the saint herself, but very much "touched up" with wax, human hair, and clothing. You can watch this segment--or the entire episode--by clicking here. You can read the former blog post by clicking here. Thanks so much to posters Cheryl, Josh and Allan for alerting me to this!
