Sacred Natural Spring near the Sacred Cave
This is Part II in a series of two soundscapes that I captured at what is considered a sacred site in northwestern Massachusetts. Part II is a 4 #39;20" soundscape of a natural spring adjacent to a small cave, where at least four different tribes of indigenous peoples of the Americas have held special ceremonies (tribal peoples coming from the northeast and plains regions of the United States and Canada). This soundscape follows a clear formal architectonic shape: a) the gentle trickling sounds of the flow of a natural spring, rustling leaves during the fall season, bird-life; b) an increase in wind intensity and forest sounds activity; and c) a decrease in the wind intensity revealing the "tapping" percussive sounds of falling leaves (lots of birch and white oak), shaken from their branches and making their improvisatory decent to earth. Native American spirituality is a land-based spirituality, above all else. The relationship between the land and the people was one of mystical inter-dependence, and it played a central role in the lives of many of these peoples. As Angie Debo writes in The History of the Indians of the United States: he (the Indian) was deeply religious. The familiar shapes of earth, the changing sky, the wild animals he knew, were joined with his own spirit in mystical communion. The powers of nature, the personal quest of the soul, the acts of daily life, the solidarity of the tribe--all were religious, and were sustained by dance and ritual. We research the last technology... item... thing. Spirituality. Whatever. Time to carve a rock. Yup, guys, I #39;ve got this thing recorded. Not sure what to do about all the sequels... there #39;s stuff that pops up on the screen and disappears after a short amount of time. I want to get those things, but I don #39;t want a whole video of me dragging the mouse around, looking for those items, and for villagers to get them. So I #39;m not sure how to approach those games. Probably *gulp* ignore them during recording, and then play a bunch offscreen to make up for the losses. Born at the Churchill Hospital in Oxford, England. Grew up mostly in a small village, ( Long Hanborough ) 15 miles North West of Oxford. As a boy I was obsessed with history, Ancient Egypt then the Celtic heritage that is all around in a country like England. From the Rollright Stone Circle just north of us to the Roman Villa a short walk to the West. Avebury and the Uffington White Horse to the South. All around me was a magical land of Vikings, Celts, Romans, Normans and Saxons. If you walked through a ploughed field you would find Stone Age flints, and musket balls from the Civil Wars. Everywhere was a long lost battlefield. Alongside all this history there were the Legends and Folk tales, Glimpses of a Pagan past. I felt I belonged. This was my land, my history. As a boy, If I wasn #39;t at school I was down the woods or by the river with my dog #39;Meg #39;. In my mind we were ancient Celts, or Vikings. The Spirits of the trees and fields were always with us. As I grew up these feelings of connection to the past, to the land, stayed with me and matured. A spirituality grew inside me based around my connection to my surroundings. The idea that Natures spirit was in all things and all powerful.That we are a part of nature, and it is enough to be a part of it. An unmanned Russian cargo spacecraft Progress M-16M was successfully launched from Baikonur Space Center in Kazakhstan late on Wednesday night (Moscow time). Just six hours later the space freighter had reached the International Space Station (ISS) and docked, putting a new fast rendezvous program to the test. All previous flights of Soyuz and Progress spacecraft have usually taken over two days to arrive at the ISS. In the early hours of Tuesday, at 01:16am Moscow time, the Russian cargo spaceship Progress successfully undocked from the International Space Station (ISS). It will remain in orbit until mid-August to carry out a scientific experiment, before plunging into the Pacific Ocean. Progress M-15M engaged with the ISS #39; Pirs module on Sunday. The docking was controlled by the Kurs-NA system, an upgraded version of the older automatic docking system, which is currently used on the Russian Progress and Soyuz vehicles. The previous attempt to test the new Kurs on July 24 failed. The spacecraft, which earlier docked to deliver fresh supplies, had undocked from the ISS ready for the test. It got into a position 161 kilometers from the ISS and began re-docking. But when the Progress was just 15 kilometers from its target, the system ordered that the maneuver be aborted. Russian space carrier Progress safely docked with the International Space Station (ISS) on Sunday morning. It was a second attempt to dock the carrier, after the new generation approach pattern Kurs--NA had been installed on it. According to the Russian Space Agency, the first docking, which was attempted on 24 July, went wrong due to a sensing system malfunction of the Kurs--NA. The spacecraft will spend some three weeks in orbit, after which it will be buried in the unnavigable part of the Pacific Ocean.
