Beaches, bombs and gangsters _ Corsica's dilemma

AJACCIO, Corsica (AP) The bombs exploded across hundreds of miles (kilometers) of Corsican coastline, gutting two dozen villas nearly simultaneously on some of Europe's most beautiful and valuable land. Elsewhere on the same French island off the Mediterranean coast, a young man was shot to death in his car, his stepson wounded beside him.

The night of violence in early December epitomized the problems of Napoleon's native island today: Organized crime is gaining ground, spreading beyond the usual vices on the mainland to real estate, tourism and politics back home. And separatists, who extinguished themselves in a spasm of deadly infighting in the late 1990s, have come back with a vengeance, as they wage a desperate battle to prevent mob-dominated mass tourism from dooming their dreams of self-rule.

Corsican coastal land prices have risen as much as five times in as many years, and the number of tourists also has shot up as a once-exclusive haven for the wealthy and their yachts and private vacation homes became a destination for cruise ships and budget flights. Corsican mobsters infamous in mainland France and the United States for their ties to gambling, nightclubs and drugs saw a killing to be made back home.

Gang warfare over Corsican spoils and the separatist bombing campaign have created a climate of lawlessness, although the combatants have been careful not to turn the violence on the tourists themselves.

"The state has completely failed," said Dominique Bianchi, a former nationalist leader who recently stepped down as mayor of the southern village of Villanova. "In this world, there's only one thing that counts: how to divide the loot."

Shaken by the bombings, and the recent assassinations of a defense lawyer and community leader, the Paris government is making new promises to clean things up on an island where separatist sentiment has simmered ever since France officially took charge in 1769. Corsica has emerged as a jewel of French mass tourism only recently: More than 4.2 million tourists visited the island last year, compared to 2.4 million in 1992. The 2013 Tour de France, the world's premier cycling competition, will begin here adding to the sense that Corsica has joined the big leagues as a top travel destination.

Complicating the challenge for France is what mainland officials describe as a code of silence known as "omerta" that also runs through areas of mafia-plagued southern Italy. Locals say it's fear, not omerta, that keeps people silent.

Of the 85 gangland killings and attempted assassinations in Corsica in the past eight years, only one case a plot against a former nationalist turned president of Corsica's biggest soccer team has ended in conviction.

Both the mob violence and the bombings claimed by militant nationalists have the same root, Corsicans say: the land.

Three-quarters of the coastline is untouched, the beaches and Mediterranean views achingly empty of a human presence just a 90-minute flight from Paris as developers were scared off by gangland warfare and separatist militancy. "Where else could you go and have this kind of virgin land? It doesn't exist anymore," said Dominique Yvon, who is part of an anti-corruption group on Corsica.

Unraveling the Secrets of Viruses – Video

Unraveling the Secrets of Viruses
Science for the Public, May 17, 2011. John Connor, PhD, Assistant Professor of Microbiology, Boston University School of Medicine. Viruses may be minimal structures, but many types, such as HIV and Ebola, can be lethal. Although genetically much simpler than the organisms they infect, the ability of viruses to mutate rapidly makes it extremely hard to block them. The Connor Lab at Boston University School of Medicine studies the mechanisms that make viruses so successful. Professor Connor explains what viruses are, how they pirate living cells to replicate themselves, and why they are able to mutate so quickly. Dr. Connor and his colleagues are applying the understanding of viral replication mechanisms to research that will lead to the development of new antiviral drugs and vaccines.

Parahumans have been referred to as "human-animal hybrids" in a vernacular sense that also encompasses human-animal chimeras. The term parahuman is not used in scientific publications. The term is sometimes used to sensationalize research that involves mixing biological materials from humans and other species. It was used in a National Geographic article to describe an experiment in 2003, during which Chinese scientists at the Shanghai Second Medical University successfully fused human cells with rabbit eggs. Focusing young eyes on biology

Saturday January 12, 2013

NORTH ADAMS -- Twenty-seven fourth-graders at Greylock Elementary School were up to their gills in science lab work this week.

Friday concluded a five-day program called BioEYES that Williams College presented in the school. The biology program focuses on learning about and implementing a study on a fast-breeding species known as zebrafish.

Williams College first brought the program to Williamstown Elementary School four years ago. This year, the college expanded the program to include a pilot program at Greylock.

"Its amazing. Its different," said fourth-grade teacher Susan Candiloro. "The kids have been very engaged and asked excellent questions this week. Not to mention theyve been responsible about taking care of the fish."

Candiloro and fellow teacher Paul Narotski combined classrooms this week so Williams neuroscience professor Martha Marvin and students from her winter study course could run the BioEYES workshop with the kids.

BioEYES is a science education program for students in kindergarten through 12th grade, developed by Philadelphia-based neurobiologist Steven Farber and educator Jamie Shuda.

During the week, Marvin and the Williams College students helped the elementary school students to formulate hypotheses about genetics and then test their hypotheses by mating a male and female zebrafish. Zebrafish breeding is a model system for studying vertebrates and neuroscience

On Friday, the fourth-graders put their developing fish -- some creatures given names like "Squishy," "Squirmy" and "Nemo" -- under microscopes brought in by the college. Since zebrafish embryos are transparent, the students were able to observe organs, a heartbeat and blood flow in their specimens.

Audible reactions from the kids ranged from "whoa," to "eww" to "weird."

Pingry biology teacher publishes research paper in online journal

Pingry biology teacher Dr. Morgan Thompson, a resident of Bridgewater, recently had a research paper published online in the scientific journal Nature Structural & Molecular Biology in December 2012. The journal, among the most prestigious in the biology field, publishes articles about protein structures and how proteins function inside cells.

The articles topic stemmed from the larger question of how cells move around inside the body. Dr. Thompsons work focused on examining the structure of two proteins and their interaction with each other at an atomic level: actin, which forms long polymers that act like a skeleton to give cells their structure, and a class of proteins called formins, which interact with actin and help regulate polymer assembly. Solving the structure of these proteins led her to develop two molecular models that illustrate this interaction. Determining the relationship between actin and formins could lead to a better understanding of a wide range of diseases from muscle disease to cancer.

Dr. Thompson, who earned a Ph.D. at Dartmouth College in the fall of 2012, has been presenting this research at conferences for about five years, and her paper was a chapter in her thesis for the Ph.D. She conducted lab research under the guidance of Dartmouth biochemist Dr. Henry Higgs and Dartmouth chemistry professor Dr. Jon Kull.

Her experiences in graduate school serve Dr. Thompson well at Pingry, since she uses her molecular biology skills from Dartmouth in a molecular biology research class she teaches and in introductory biology labs. New to Pingry this school year, she said, I came to Pingry because of the advanced level of its research program and science curriculum compared to other high schools. I have been really impressed with what Pingry offers its students.

The skinny on skin care

Wondering what those unpronouncable or flowery-sounding ingredients are in your creams and lotions? Read on:

Anthocyanin

The Claim: A potent anti-oxidant found in purple varieties of potatoes and carrots and in the Australian kakadu plum, anthocyanin promises to fight free radical damage caused by the suns UV rays and build collagen in the skin.

The Proof: There has been a decent amount of research looking into anthocyanin as a natural sun-protection agent with basic science showing that it also can stall the growth of precancerous skin cells, says Dr. Adam Friedman, assistant professor of medicine and director of dermatologic research at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, New York.

Seaweed

The Claim: Derived fromalgae and kelp, seaweed extract is rich in proteins, vitamins and minerals that balance and tone your skin, and serves as a powerful humectant (attracts water).

The Proof: Seaweed functions very similarly to hyaluronic acid thats naturally found in your skin, which holds 1,000 times its weight in water -- meaningit can pull water into the skin to hydrate it, Friedman says.

Bamboo

The Claim: The bamboo plant contains a high level of silica, an element that supports collagen in the skin to give it a youthful glow. Silica naturally depletes as you get older, resulting in a dry and wrinkled complexion.

The Proof: Bamboo extract is an effective anti-aging ingredient because its the richest known source of silica, says Dr. Debra Jaliman, author of Skin Rules: Trade Secrets from a Top New York Dermatologist.
