MOSCOW - Christopher Nomura will become the University of Idahos vice president of research and economic development on October 1, 2020.

Nomura is vice president for research and a biochemistry professor at State University of New Yorks (SUNY) College of Environmental Science and Forestry.

It is a privilege and honor to be selected as the next vice president for research at the University of Idaho, one of the premier research institutions in the nation. I am so excited to work with President Green and the University of Idaho community to build on the strong foundation already in place and elevate research to new heights, Nomura said.

Nomura replaces Janet Nelson, who served in the position since 2016. Brad Ritts, U of Is associate vice president for research and Department of Geological Sciences faculty member, has been serving as interim vice president of research and economic development since February.

Nomura earned a bachelors degree in biology from University of California at Santa Cruz and his doctoral degree in biochemistry, microbiology and molecular biology at Pennsylvania State University. An internationally recognized scientist/administrator, Nomura has more than 85 publications in top journals in his field and serves on several editorial boards.

In his current position, Nomura oversees McIntire-Stennis funding coming to SUNY that is designed to increase forestry research and train future forestry scientists.

Christopher Nomura has extensive experience fostering industry collaborations and working with both national and international research funding agencies, U of I President Scott Green said. His talent and energy will be valuable additions as the University of Idaho continues to grow our research enterprise in service to the state of Idaho.

We are seeking a post-doctoral research associate to join the laboratory of Dr Mick Urbaniak in the Division of Biomedical and Life Sciences at Lancaster University, UK. This BBSRC funded project will investigate the mechanisms by which African trypanosomes sense and respond to iron availability in the mammalian host using a combination of genetic and proteomic techniques.

Lancaster University has a world-class reputation as a centre for excellence in teaching and research. The Division of Biomedical and Life Sciences, within the Faculty of Health and Medicine, is a rapidly growing, innovative and vibrant Division whose research effort is directed towards understanding basic cellular and physiological mechanisms that underpin disease states. Our lab investigates how trypanosomes use post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression to respond to changes in their environment, such as iron availability (see Benz et al (2018), DOI: 10.1371/journal.pone.0206332). You will be joining a small, dedicated team in a well-equipped laboratory space with facilities including Biohazard Category 2 and 3 laboratories.

Candidates are required to have a PhD in Biochemistry or a related subject, and a strong background in either trypanosome cell biology or quantitative proteomics. Experience of molecular biology, cell culture techniques, and the analysis and interpretation of data is essential. Experience of working with African trypanosomes, RNA and proteomic techniques would be an advantage, although training will be given.

Dr. Christi Patton Luks, teaching professor of chemical and biochemical engineering at Missouri University of Science and Technology, has been elected as a fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) in recognition of her contributions to the chemical engineering field.

Dr. Christi Patton Luks, teaching professor of chemical and biochemical engineering at Missouri University of Science and Technology, has been elected as a fellow of theAmerican Institute of Chemical Engineers(AIChE) in recognition of her contributions to the chemical engineering field.

A fellowship is the highest grade of membership in AIChE.

Dr. Luks is widely known for her contributions not only to chemical engineering, but also to Missouri S&T, both in the classroom and as acting department chair, says Dr. Richard Wlezien, vice provost and dean of the College of Engineering and Computing. Being elected a fellow is a tremendous honor, and one that Dr. Luks richly deserves.

Luks has been a member of AIChE for several years. Her first leadership role in the organization was chairing the Womens Initiative Committee (WIC) in 2006. That role propelled her to join the Societal Impact Operating Council (SIOC), which she chaired in 2011, and to participate in multiple activities with the K-12 Committee and the Global Societal Impact Committee (GSIC).

Luks has been active in the AIChE education division and on the student chapters committee. She has served as judge for the minority affairs committee scholarship awards and several competitions: student design, student paper, regional Chem-E-Car Safety and Engineering 4 Good.

I am proud of the fact that I was selected for this honor despite my nontraditional academic career path, says Luks. I was never interested in the traditional tenure-track to tenure career. By pursuing a non-tenure-track teaching career, I have been able to tailor my work to the activities I love. It is fabulous to be recognized by my technical colleagues.

Luks earned a bachelors degree in chemical engineering from Texas A&M and a masters degree in applied math from the University of Tulsa, where she also earned a doctorate degree in chemical engineering. She worked briefly in industry before pursuing an academic career. Luks joined the faculty at Missouri S&T in 2014. Currently, she serves on the board of directors of the American Society for Engineering Education and is the national president of Omega Chi Epsilon, the chemical engineering honor society.

Whitworth grad takes passion for community service from Zimbabwe to Washington, D.C. – The Spokesman-Review

Growing up in Harare, the capital of Zimbabwe, Nadia Sarfraz spent much of her time volunteering at schools, orphanages and retirement homes.

In particular, she remembers leading a group of students who collected donations and wrapped Christmas gifts for children who had little to look forward to on the holiday.

I come from a very collectivist culture where we all get through things together, we work together, I serve my community, Sarfraz said. My entire life, I was raised around the idea of service.

Sarfraz took that passion for community service to Spokane four years ago when she started her undergraduate career at Whitworth University. The 22-year-old recently graduated from Whitworth after a semester disrupted by the coronavirus pandemic.

Her accomplishments are many and varied.

Sarfraz majored in biochemistry, and yet she found time to work extensively at Whitworths Dornsife Center for Community Engagement. She managed a mentorship program called RISE that connects Whitworth students with kids at local K-12 schools.

Working with local nonprofits and attending city council meetings, Sarfraz has advocated for a wide range of causes, including mental health outreach, affordable housing, food security, cultural heritage preservation and animal rescue.

Sarfraz enjoys getting others involved, too. In the United States, she said shes noticed many people being really compassionate, but then not knowing how to funnel their compassion into service.

Last year, through Whitworths honors program, Sarfraz spent the fall semester in Washington, D.C., as an intern at two Smithsonian Institution museums.

At the National Museum of American History, she helped create teaching tools for people with vision and hearing disabilities objects they could touch and hold to get a tactile experience as they toured exhibits. Those included objects made with a 3D printer and strips of fabric that mimicked the feel of dresses worn by the nations first ladies.

At the National Museum of Air and Space, Sarfraz researched the ethics of spaceflight and, in particular, a condition known as spaceflight-associated neuro-ocular syndrome. Basically, she explained, astronauts lose eyesight as they travel farther into space a problem with great implications for any future attempt at a Mars landing.

Among many other awards, Sarfraz recently won a Governors Student Civic Leader Award from Washington Campus Compact, a coalition of colleges and universities in the state. She was one of three students in Washington to win the award, which comes with a $1,000 stipend.

Sarfraz already has moved back to D.C., where she plans to pursue a doctorate in biochemistry followed by a law degree at Georgetown University, starting this fall. In her spare time, she hopes to get involved in yet another area of volunteer work: advocating for prisoners on death row.

A lot has changed in Zimbabwe since Sarfraz moved away, including a military coup that ousted strongman president Robert Mugabe, who led the country for nearly four decades.

Sarfraz has visited home a few times and considered moving back to Harare, where her parents are doctors, but now says she will let her career and passion lead her to her next destination.

For the longest time, I thought I wanted to be a doctor like my parents, and go back and work with the nonprofit clinics that we have there, Sarfraz said. But then, she said, she began noticing laws and policies that have inhibited a lot of the people that I care about doctors and patients from actually accessing the help that they need in so many different ways.

She looks forward to knocking down some of those barriers.

The nine Knights set a program-record, surpassing the seven players who received the recognition last season.

A total of 72 players from the Continental Volleyball Conference have earned CVC Academic All-Conference honors for 2020. Juniata College led the way with 12 representatives while all ten member schools had at least three players receive the award.

Players are nominated by their head coaches and must carry a cumulative GPA of at least 3.3 for the academic year.

Biochemists to Bolsonaro: virus protests across the world – Yahoo News

As the prospect of a second virus wave fuels fears of new lockdowns in Europe and elsewhere,anger is growing in some quarters over crippling restrictions imposed to slow transmission of the disease.

From football fans to far-right conspiracy theorists to presidents, here is an overview of those who are protesting measures related to the pandemic.

- 'Lateral thinkers' -

A movement calling themselves Querdenken-711 or "Lateral thinkers-711" sprung up in the western German city of Stuttgart with anti-coronavirus restrictions demonstrations as early as in mid-April, days before Germany began to ease its lockdown on April 20.

The movement rails against the "dictatorship" of the corona measures and has held "vigils for the constitution".

Initiated by Michael Ballweg, an IT entrepreneur, the movement has snowballed, gathering along its way conspiracy theorists, anti-vaxxers and far-right or far-left activists.

Some 20,000 of them marched in central Berlin last weekend, most wearing no masks and failing to respect social distancing rules, sparking a hail of condemnation.

The movement has called new protests in Stuttgart on Saturday and in Dortmund on Sunday. Another round of demonstrations is also expected in Berlin on August 29.

In the Netherlands, similar groups have launched protests but the demonstrations have so far stayed small, although hardcore football supporters have joined in, openly seeking confrontation with police at demonstrations.

A group calling themselves "virus truth" is co-led by former biochemist-turned-dance instructor Willem Engel, who told local papers he was schooled in the Dutch tradition of individuality and the right to question decisions by the country's health authorities.

In July, dozens gathered in London to protest the face mask requirement in England's shops and supermarkets, many of them holding banners with widely discredited conspiracy theories -- such as coronavirus prevention measures being used for "mind control".

Romania has also seen a few hundred so-called coronasceptics -- holding religious icons, the national flag and signs that read "I believe in GOD, not in COVID" -- frequently protest in Bucharest against what they call a "sanitary dictatorship".

Small groups of protesters in Spain have meanwhile flouted one of the most stringent restrictions in Europe to march.

On July 12, police broke up an unauthorised gathering of a few dozen protesters shouting "no to dictatorship" and holding up anti-mask and anti-5G placards.

- Leaders fighting restrictions -

Beyond the grassroots, leading criticism against restrictions aimed at dampening transmission has come from top politicians themselves.

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonarohas fought stay-at-home measures to contain the virus, despite testing positive and spending three weeks in isolation after coming down with a fever last month.

Last week, in his first public event since his illness, he greeted a crowd of supporters in the northeastern state of Piaui, removing his face mask to loud cheers.

US President Donald Trump had adamantly refused to advocate for the wearing of masks until mid-July.

Many sheriffs -- who are often elected officials -- have also resisted enforcing state-imposed mask regulations in their counties.

In Italy, far-right leader Matteo Salvini was widely criticised last week after he spoke in the Senate without a mask, saying that "greeting with elbows is the end of the human race."

He has since backpedalled, saying that masks should be worn "when needed".

- Tighter measures please -

But in some countries, people have come out to express dissatisfaction at their government's failure to impose stricter measures.

Serbia saw a brief but intense outburst of anger in early July, when police clashed with protesters outraged over the government's handling of the coronavirus pandemic.

Demonstrators came out into the streets, accusing President Aleksandar Vucic of having facilitated a new wave of infections by lifting an initial lockdown for general elections that his party largely won.

Some demonstrators hurled stones, firecrackers and flares at police, who responded with tear gas.

In Sweden, which controversially adopted a softer approach to fighting the virus, demonstrators have called for tighter rather than looser measures.

A handful of protesters have regularly assembled outside the Public Health Agency's weekly press conferences in Stockholm.

MSU grad student selected as one of only 34 to receive NASA award – KULR-TV

BOZEMAN - A Montana State graduate student will investigate unique bacteria that could provide insights into how multicellular life evolved.

George Schaible, a doctoral student in biochemistry, will receive $133,000 worth of funding in support of three years of research that started while studying microbes in Yellowstone National Park's hot springs as an undergraduate at MSU.

Schaible is one of only 34 graduate students in the U.S. to receive the Future Investigators in NASA Earth and Space Science and Technology award from the agencys Planetary Science Division.

A Missoula native, Schaible earned his bachelor's in biotechnology with a microbial focus from MSU in 2014. He also earned minors in biochemistry and astrobiology, which involves studying how life originated to understand what it might look like elsewhere in the universe.

"One of my favorite things about being an undergraduate at MSU was that we were encouraged to join research labs," Schaible said. "Those experiences really got me into research and how interesting and exciting it can be."

Although scientists have known about the bacteria for more than two decades, they haven't been able to grow, or "culture," them in a laboratory setting, which has halted efforts to understand how the microbes achieve their unique form.

Schaible was named a Molecular Biosciences Fellow, which allowed him flexibility to conduct research across departments. He was also awarded a STEM Storytellers Fellowship, funded by the National Science Foundation to improve graduate students' oral communication skills.
