Changes announced for Freedom Fest 2013

The Freedom Fest board of directors met in January to discuss the future of the event after looming financial difficulties came to a head in 2012. The result is a more streamlined Freedom Fest that will continue the celebration with less of a financial burden.

The Murray Convention and Visitors Bureau is in charge of planning and executing the event. According to Erin Carrico, executive director of the Murray CVB, Freedom Fest has always struggled financially. Since the beginning, Freedom Fest has never existed to make a profit. However, it has always been a challenge for it to break even. In 2012 we saw sponsorships down and expenses at an all-time high, leaving the event unable to pay its bills, she said.

One of the reasons Freedom Fest struggles each year is it has always been a free event, relying solely on support from sponsors and donations. With the economic downturn we have seen a reduction in sponsorships and advertising, which in turn hurts the bottom line, Carrico said.

"After reviewing Freedom Fest's financial situation, we knew some things had to change, said Deana Wright, chair of the Freedom Fest board of directors.

A plan to cut expenses while also refocusing the event was presented to the board at the January meeting. "I think with this new plan we have narrowed the focus of Freedom Fest. Before, we would try to have a little something for everyone. Now, each event will be targeted and have the potential for more growth," Wright said.

Freedom Fest, which has in the past been a three-day event, will now last only two days. Family Day in the Park, which has been on Sunday, will be moved to Saturday night and centered around the fireworks. The fireworks are shot off at 9:30 p.m. and visible from Central Park. Activities will largely remain the same with inflatables, pony rides, a petting zoo and non-profit vendors. In addition, a local band will perform at the amphitheater and food vendors will be present.

"I am excited about the changes for Saturday night," Wright said. "Since the Freedom Fest concert ended, Saturday night has been lacking in activities. Thousands of people line (U.S.) Hwy. 641 to watch the fireworks, and then they go home. This gives them more options than just a 15-minute fireworks show." She added that the Town and Gown Community Band Concert will still take place before the fireworks, as it did in 2012.

There are other changes being made to Freedom Fest this year to cut expenses. This includes canceling Bacon in the Sun (an amateur barbecue competition), not having inflatables at Kids' Zone Friday night and changing the event guide, which was previously a 28-page book, to a smaller brochure.

"I am confident that these changes will not only solve Freedom Fest's financial difficulties, but also make the event better. I think we will see it grow over the next few years," Wright said.

Freedom Fest 2013 will take place June 28-29. More information can be found by calling the Murray CVB at 759-2199.

Freedom, Nisei Soldiers honored in New Orleans

The National World War II Museum in New Orleans opened its newest wing, the U.S. Freedom Pavilion: The Boeing Center, during a ribbon-cutting ceremony Jan. 12. More than 1,000 veterans, active-duty service members, family members and dignitaries attended the two-hour event that featured World War II veterans from every state, the museums Victory Belles singing group, and Salute to Freedom essay contest winners from every state. Master of ceremonies Tom Brokaw, author of The Greatest Generation and a noted television journalist, said the World War II years were a time when the freedom of the world hung in the balance. Americans answered the call to protect that freedom with 16 million men and women serving in uniform and an untold number of citizens of all ages doing their part on the home front, Brokaw said. It is their contributions we honor in the U.S. Freedom Pavilion: The Boeing Center. Brokaw became emotional as he paid homage to those who gave their lives in the battle for freedom. "When these guys enrolled, they went off to war when they were 18, he said. The lives that we have today, they gave to us not just at war, but when they came home they built new industries and went to college, went to school they never asked for credit. U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La., said she would continue to work toward raising more funding for the museum. "Our entire delegation across party lines is asking in these tough budget times for the country to honor the story of this greatest generation and to have it told here in the city of New Orleans, Landrieu said. I'm going to get back to Washington to get the $30 million dollars that we need to finish it." The pavilion features a variety of artifacts that comprised the big guns of American military might. These include the B-17E Flying Fortress and B-25J Mitchell bomber, as well as a SBD-3 Dauntless dive-bomber, TBM Avenger torpedo bomber, P-51D Mustang fighter and Corsair F4U-4 fighter. The pavilion also will include a massive wall honoring WWII Medal of Honor recipients and an interactive submarine experience based on the final mission of the USS Tang. Exhibits will employ the newest digital technologies to ensure a thrilling journey into the heart of the American spirit. Other exhibits include: -Warbirds -Vehicles of War -Service and Sacrifice -Arsenal of Democracy -What Would You Do? The What Would You Do? is especially appealing to youngsters and active-duty service members as it puts the visitor into a specific situation faced by leaders in World War II and asks for the guests resolution. National WWII Museum President and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Gordon H. Nick Mueller said that opening of the pavilion will provide the nations World War II Museum with more exhibits for its visitors. This is an exciting and emotional event, he said. Activity on the home front was vital to the Allied victory in World War II, and Boeing was at the epicenter of that industrial movement, producing more than 19,000 B-17s, B-29s and other essential aircraft. The B-17 and other artifacts to be displayed in the U.S. Freedom Pavilion: The Boeing Center represent the nations tremendous industrial capacity and American wartime ingenuity. Mueller said The U.S. Freedom Pavilion presents the blend of people, weapons, industrial might and values all reflecting the American spirit required to secure the freedoms called for by President Franklin D. Roosevelt during his address to Congress on Jan. 6, 1941: Freedom of speech and expression; freedom of every person to worship God in his or her own way; freedom from want; and freedom from fear. The U.S. Freedom Pavilion speaks to the extraordinary scale and intensity of the American war effort, Mueller said. This is the story of America at war on land, in the air and at sea told in a way that will fully engage the senses, the mind and the heart. Following the ribbon-cutting for the Freedom Pavilion, a second ceremony in the museums main hall announced the opening of a Smithsonian traveling exhibit: World War II Nisei Soldiers and the Congressional Gold Medal. Most JapaneseAmericans who fought in World War II were Nisei, JapaneseAmericans born in the U.S. Shortly after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941, JapaneseAmerican men were initially categorized as 4C (enemy alien) and therefore not subject to the draft. On Feb. 19, 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066, authorizing military authorities to prescribe military areas in such places and of such extent as he or the appropriate Military Commander may determine, from which any or all persons may be excluded, and with respect to which, the right of any person to enter, remain in, or leave shall be subject to whatever restrictions the Secretary of War or the appropriate Military Commander may impose in his discretion. In March 1942, Lt. Gen. John L. DeWitt, head of the Western Defense Command and Fourth Army, issued the first of 108 military proclamations that resulted in the forced relocation from their residences to guarded relocation camps of more than 110,000 people of Japanese ancestry on the West Coast. In spite of their families interment, a significant number of Nisei Soldiers performed valiantly during World War II, including Sen. Daniel Inouye, D-Ha., who recently passed away. Inouye earned the Congressional Medal of Honor for heroism in World War II. The ceremony kicked off a seven-city tour for the exhibit.

Freedom-camper waste still problem

John Taylor

A delegation will meet Land Information New Zealand management today in a renewed bid to improve the government department's management of Crown land along the lake.

Linz administers areas such as Deep Bay and Craig Burn which are popular with freedom campers.

In an inspection of the areas on Wednesday, Guardians of Lake Hawea executive member John Taylor and Lake Hawea Community Association vice-president Di Turnbull found evidence human excrement was being left behind when freedom campers departed.

They photographed the evidence for the meeting but noted the amount of excrement was less than in previous years.

Last year, Mr Taylor described both areas as ''a cesspit''.

The pair believed a toilet installed by the Queenstown Lakes District Council at Craig Burn might have been one reason for the improvement, although it was already there last summer when the problem was particularly bad.

Mr Taylor, who has been pushing for improvements for nine years, said he had been advised to use his camera to capture evidence of the problem and he now had an extensive library.

''The only problem is, no-one wants to look at it.''

As he and Ms Turnbull pushed through scrub in search of evidence on Wednesday, they were approached by a freedom-camping German woman, who asked if they were ''looking for something special''.

lessons on eugenics, part 2 (kill your children [so we don #39;t have to])
calenfretts.com in 1974, the eugenicist Henry Kissinger (National Security Advisor at the time) published National Security Study Memorandum 200: Implications of Worldwide Population Growth for US Security and Overseas Interests (NSSM200). this study was adopted as official US policy in 1975. as the title implies, the report discusses the need for population *control* in developing countries. the main form of population *control* endorsed is, of course, abortion. Kissinger supported an interesting method of encouraging countries to engage in abortion, as seen in part 2 of the study: Since population growth is a major determinant of increases in food demand, allocation of scarce PL 480 resources should take account of what steps a country is taking in population control as well as food production. In these sensitive relationships, however, it is important in style as well as substance to avoid the appearance of coercion. in case you missed it, let me spell that out for you: we should give preferential treatment with regards to food and aid to countries which are committed to using abortion as a method of population control. but, we should be sneaky about it! it is important to note that the US refuses to rescind this policy, even after being called upon to do so ever since the report was made public in the early 90s. if something seems familiar about this, its probably because one of Obamas first moves in office was to reinforce this policy of providing aid to abortion ...

lessons on eugenics, part 1 (dont drink the water)
calenfretts.com a study was done 3 years ago stating that 1/3 of male fish in English rivers are turning female due to estrogen-heavy chemicals in the water (similar to drugs given to transgender men). there was concern that it could even be affecting the fertility of men who drink any water from these sources. British mens sperm counts dropped by almost a third between 1989 and 2002 Prime;, the article states, leaving little doubt as to the correlation. flash forward to today, where concerns about the carbon footprint of filtering machines means that the poisons will remain in the vast majority of the British water supply. so the decision has been made, folks. the AlGoreWarming hoax is the cited reason for letting the peoples water supply remain poisoned, and the people go along with it because we have to save the polar bears icecaps from melting in the summer (the fact that they re-freeze in the winter is irrelevant and has nothing to do with reality). Gordon Browns green adviser surely likes that reproduction will be hindered, since he wants a 50% population decrease. at least this is only happening to the Brits, oy? not so fast. Obamas science czar would not only be okay with it, he advocated water sterilization as well as other eugenics methods such as compulsory abortions, forced sterilization, and implanted birth control, in his 1977 book Ecoscience. you see, some of the worlds top minds think the world is overpopulated, and (at least) 90% of humans need to die. of ...

Va. eugenics program victims closer to payment

HAMPTON ROADS, Va. Lewis Reynolds didnt know what had been done to him until years later.

After getting married, the Lynchburg man found he couldnt father children. The reason: He had been sterilized at age 13 under a Virginia law with the stated purpose of preventing defective persons from becoming by the propagation of their kind a menace to society.

Unable to have a family, his wife left him.

Reynolds, now 85, journeyed to Richmond this week in support of the Justice for Victims of Sterilization Act (HB1529), which would pay $50,000 each to survivingVirginians who were involuntarily sterilized between 1924 and 1979 under the Virginia Eugenical Sterilization Act.Eugenics was the now-discredited movement that sought to improve the genetic composition of humankind by limiting the reproduction of those deemed its less desirable members.

The Virginia law became a model for similar legislation passed around the country and the world, including Nazi Germany. The law was upheld in the 1927 Supreme Court case Buck v. Bell, in which Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr., writing for the majority, famously declared: Three generations of imbeciles are enough.

The Virginia sterilizations, more than 7,000 of them, were performed at six state institutions, including what is now known as Central Virginia Training Center in Lynchburg. When Reynolds was sterilized, it was called the Virginia Colony for the Epileptic and Feeble Minded.

Reynolds was presumed to have epilepsy. As it turned out, he was exhibiting temporary symptoms from having been hit in the head with a rock.

Reynolds married again, and this time the union lasted. His second wife, Delores, died five years ago.

We had a good marriage for 47 years, he said in an interview.

But he has always regretted being unable to father children.

Mike Dolce Confident Cris Cyborg Will Be Better at 135lbs; Believes She Beats Ronda Rousey Any Day

There have been more than just a few questions about Cris Cyborg Santos and her possible move down to 135 pounds for a chance to fight in the UFC and to face women's champ Ronda Rousey.

When recently appearing on UFC Tonight, former light heavyweight champion Tito Ortiz, who serves as one of Cyborg's MMA managers, commented that he knows a cut to 135 pounds for the former Strikeforce champion would be awfully rough. He even mentioned the possibility of a warm-up fight for Cyborg once she makes the move and debuts in the UFC before facing Rousey with the championship on the line.

The man that will be in charge of getting Cyborg down to 135 pounds will be famed MMA nutritionist and weight cutting guru Mike Dolce, and he's excited for the challenge and the chance to start working with a high-level athlete like Santos.

I have every intention of working with Cris Cyborg once her UFC contract is finalized. Right now we're circling the drain, we're waiting for the go ahead, but Cris she's been on vacation in Brazil. If she was here in the United States, she and I already would have been working together. So she'll be back, her contract will be signed hopefully soon, and as soon as she has a date and an opponent, then it's game on, I will be working with Cris Cyborg, Dolce told MMAWeekly.com this week.

Dolce has a history of working with fighters either making a move to a new weight class for the first time, or helping previously troubled athletes cut weight more effectively and in a healthier manner than just sweating it out in a sauna.

He believes his track record is proof enough that he could get Cyborg down to 135 pounds in a healthy way, and she'd be as good at that weight as she ever was in her previous weight class of 145 pounds.

There's a couple ways to answer and the first way is going to be a little less than humble I'm the only guy in the world that can get Cris Cyborg on weight and healthy. I only say that because I have the history. I'm only going to point to my resume when you look at Rampage (Jackson). Rampage was 260 pounds when he came into the fight with Lyoto Machida. He came out there and made 205 pounds easily and he beat Machida. Johny Hendricks is 215 pounds, started working with me, he's beat (Jon) Fitch, (Josh) Koscheck and (Martin) Kampmann. Johny probably is the biggest welterweight in the UFC, and he's destined to be a world champion. Thiago Alves, Chael Sonnen was 233 pounds six weeks before the Michael Bisping fight in Chicago, Dolce explained.

Nobody can say that any of my athletes ever look unhealthy or ever underperform as a result of their weight cut.

Dolce had a chance to meet with Cyborg in Los Angeles before she traveled home to Brazil recently, and he knows the kind of unlocked potential she has inside. He hopes to have the key to unleash the beast, and make Cyborg the best 135-pound fighter on the planet.

She'll be 135 pounds, it will be the healthiest she's been her entire career, and it will be the best performance of her entire career or I would not have taken the job. I can't risk having an athlete underperform as a result of a weight cut. I would never jeopardize an athlete's health. A lot of athletes come to me and they want me to help them drop a weight class or two, and I've turned a lot of huge names down because it's just not safe, it's not healthy, said Dolce.

'Peaches to the Beaches' Facing Problem That Could Shut It Down

Written by Amanda Castro on Wednesday, January 23, 2013 06:23 PM. Posted in Local

EASTMAN, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) - The annual "Peaches to the Beaches" is a popular event in Georgia that attracts thousands of people from across the area. But it is facing an issue that, over time, could shut it down and impact thousands of vendors from Barnesville to Brunswick.

One weekend every March, US Highway 341 turns into Georgia's largest yard sale.

"It's a 200 plus mile event of treasure trove hunting," Paula Rogers, president of the Golden Isles Parkway Association, said.

"Peaches to the Beaches" draws in thousands of people and vendors from across the state and country. This is the ninth year of the event and the Golden Isles Parkway Association sponsors it every year. Rogers says it pumps a lot of money into the local economy.

"They [the shoppers] stop and they stay in your hotels, your restaurants, they buy gas in your communities along the way and that is tax dollars being spent," Rogers said.

Each vendor pays a $30 registration fee that goes towards advertising. But over the last three years, people started setting up their own booths without paying and that has cut one-third of the advertising budget.

"With that decrease in funds, it puts the event at risk because if we don't have the money to get the word out and advertise, no one is going to know when the event is," Rebecca McWilliam, treasurer of the Golden Isles Parkway Association, said.

Stinson's Bar-B-Q in Lumber City says business booms during the two day event. Cook Glynn Stinson says if "Peaches to the Beaches" were to shut down, it would cut into the restaurants' bottom line.

"We'd loose that group of people that come...the large number of people and it all boils down to we lose money, so business would be off," Stinson said.

Aussie professor gets US astronomy gong

THE Australian behind the field of galactic archaeology has been awarded the American Astronomical Society's top prize for a lifetime of achievement.

Ken Freeman changed the course of astronomy when he explained dark matter to the world in a paper in 1970 that revealed what we can see of galaxies - the stars, gas and dust - is only a small fraction of their mass.

The rest is invisible dark matter, said his paper.

Professor Freeman from the Australian National University has now been awarded the prestigious Henry Norris Russell Lectureship for a lifetime of seminal contributions to astronomy.

"Many of my old friends, mentors and colleagues are on the list of past recipients of this prize, and it is a great pleasure to be listed with them," he said in a statement on Thursday.

Prof Freeman won the Prime Minister's Prize for Science last year for his work.

He is a founder of the field of galactic archaeology, or research determining the age and movement of stars in our galaxy by their chemical composition.

It was born out of discussions he began in the 1980s with a post-doctoral fellow, Joss Bland-Hawthorn, who is now a professor at University of Sydney.

Most stars in galaxies are formed in groups of between 10,000 and a million stars.

After losing mass they eventually wander off and, after three or four galactic rotations of about 200 million years each, they are spread far and wide throughout the galaxy.

New thesaurus created for the astronomy community

Public release date: 24-Jan-2013 [ | E-mail | Share ]

Contact: Karen Watts karen.watts@iop.org 01-179-301-110 Institute of Physics

The American Institute of Physics (AIP) and IOP Publishing (IOP) have jointly announced the gift of a new astronomy thesaurus called the Unified Astronomy Thesaurus (UAT) to the American Astronomical Society (AAS) that will help improve future information discovery for researchers.

The AAS will make the UAT freely available for development and use within the astronomy community, while ensuring the thesaurus remains relevant and useful. Further development of the UAT will be undertaken by the John G. Wolbach Library at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in collaboration with the Astrophysics Data System (ADS) and the International Virtual Observatory Alliance (IVOA) to enhance and extend the thesaurus to ensure that it continues to meet the needs of the astronomy community.

Adoption of the thesaurus within the ADS will result in better linking with the majority of astronomy research journal articles through a common vocabulary, thereby greatly improving the accuracy of information discovery.

The creation of the UAT is a result of the combination of two separate initiatives to develop thesauri as part of semantic enrichment projects by AIP and IOP. The donation of this useful tool to the AAS will help expose relationships within content across multiple publishers and service providers for the benefit of the community as a whole.

The thesaurus will be used in semantic technologies to enable researchers to execute faster, more accurate information searches and ultimately improve the discoverability of research. With many thousands of resources being published each year in the field of astronomy, these kinds of tools are vital to ensure that researchers continue to be able to find relevant information quickly and ultimately improve the discoverability of research. This applies as much to data, web services and other resources, as it does to the bibliographic resources to which thesauri have traditionally been applied.

The work to combine the thesauri has been carried out by Access Innovations Inc, a privately held company that specializes in information management and database creation products and services.

Chris Biemesderfer, Director of Publishing at AAS said of the gift "It's both generous and foresighted for AIP and IOP to donate this work to the community, at a time when so much attention is focused on enabling semantic capabilities in scholarly research and communication. The AAS is grateful to the publishers for the timely contribution. It's exciting for the development team to receive a product that is as well thought through as this thesaurus, and the Society is proud to support the research community through partnerships like the UAT."

Mark Cassar, Publisher at AIP said, "Information discovery and retrieval are essential to advance research in all the physical sciences. This thesaurus will give astronomers and astrophysicists a more comprehensive language tool to improve data searches across disciplines. AIP is pleased to play a role in this collaboration and looks forward to seeing the benefits of UAT within the research community."
