As people begin to age the levels of Klotho in the brain also begin to decrease. They published their findings online in Journal of Neuroscience.
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a condition in which the myelin inside the brain and spinal cord becomes damaged, causing demyelination. This can cause the nerve cells in the brain to communicate inefficiently; this can lead to serious physical and cognitive disability.
Signs and symptoms of MS usually begin to appear in young adults; it is more prevalent among women.
The earliest signs of MS begin when the immune system attacks the protective myelin. The researchers found that the Klotho protein is able to produce the necessary proteins vital for the production and maintenance of a healthy myelin, which could reverse the damage caused by MS.
In an abstract in the journal authors said:
We found significant effects of Klotho on oligodendrocyte functions, including induced maturation of rat primary oligodendrocytic progenitor cells (OPCs) in vitro and myelination."
Lead author, Carmela Abraham, PhD, added: "These results taken together indicate that Klotho could become a drug target for multiple sclerosis and other white matter diseases, including AD."

Cleansing Vegetable Broth This powerful cleansing recipe not only cleans toxins from the body but also replenishes minerals in the body with its rich content of potassium and magnesium. It originates from India and is attributed to an Ayurvedic doctor. These leafy greens are also full of vitamin C, higher in beta-carotene than carrots and richer in iron and calcium than spinach.
Serves 8-10 1 bunch Swiss chard, chopped 1 bunch kale, chopped 1 bunch mustard greens, chopped head white cabbage, chopped 1 bunch dandelion greens, chopped 1 cup Brussels sprouts, chopped 1 large daikon radish, diced 1 bunch watercress, chopped 4 ounces kombu or wakeme seaweed 6 dried shiitake mushrooms 2 cloves garlic, crushed 2 leeks, sliced 1 fennel bulb, chopped 1 4-inch piece fresh ginger, peeled and chopped 1 teaspoon ground star anise 1 teaspoon ground turmeric 1 bunch fresh parsley, chopped 1 bunch fresh cilantro, chopped Chicken stock, as needed, optional Red chili flakes, optional
Put all of the ingredients into a large stockpot and fill it with enough water to cover vegetables but at least 2 inches below the rim of pot. Set the pot over medium-high heat and bring to a boil; reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer for one hour. Using a mesh strainer, remove the vegetables and set aside. Continue cooking the broth for an additional 15 minutes to strengthen the flavor and reduce slightly. Let the broth cool completely in the pot before transferring to glass jars. Store in the refrigerator for up to one week, or freeze in airtight plastic containers for up to one month. Reheat before serving. For cleansing and detoxification, consume 3 cups per day. Note: If you want to use the cooked vegetables, working in batches, puree them in a food processor or blender with just enough chicken stock to liqueify them and then transfer the puree to a saucepan. Heat over medium-low heat until warmed; ladle into bowls and garnish with chili flakes. Serve immediately. Recipe courtesy Dr. Maos Secrets of Longevity Cookbook, by Dr. Mao Shing Ni

Admit it or not, as you age your skin starts showing signs that you would rather hide. Spots, wrinkles, and even crow's feet are just some of those signs that you would camouflage with makeup and skin creams to make them disappear-temporarily. But fear not, for beauty experts have discovered that stem cell treatment can also help in maintaining youthful skin.
According to Ma Fe Doria, a skin care expert, stem cell therapy is an intervention strategy that introduces new adult stem cells into damaged tissue in order to treat disease or injury. As many may be aware, the most popular stem cell treatment is in Germany, where lots of celebrities and personalities (i.e. politicians) have flown to have stem cell injections for their ailments, using cells mostly harvested from the sheep. According to those who have undergone the procedure, the treatments have improved their body and the pains they've experienced have disappeared.
Today, many medical researchers continue to do experiments to determine if stem cell can help in curing various types of ailments from cancer to diabetes, which doctors have said may not be far behind. Aside from its healing benefits, stem cell is now being used by the beauty industry. Many cosmetic and beauty centers have started offering stem cell injections for the face, which is said to regenerate the skin where the cells are injected. While some continue to use sheep cells, plant and fat stem cells are now becoming the popular alternatives, with the fat stem cells being used to heal wounds, improve scars, and rejuvenate the skin.
But stem cell treatment is not cheap. Those who can afford it need to fly out of the country to avail of the treatment. Realizing the need in the market, Flawless Facial Center partnered with a local industry leader to produce Flawless' Stem Cell line, which uses the potent power of plant stem cells. Dubbed as the "superfood for the skin," Flawless' Stem Cell line is the epitome of skin nutrition.
"This new range of products allowed us to mark several milestones not just for Flawless but for the local beauty industry. Once again, we have taken something that, for the longest time, has remained exclusive to celebrities and other influential people, and made it affordable for the regular Juan and Juana," says Flawless ceo Ruby Sy.
For P2,500, the line includes a cleanser, day cream, and night serum. Flawless' Stem Cell line utilizes the plant stem cell technology to achieve the skin's youthful appearance by protecting it against oxidative stress and boosting the skin's repair and rejuvenation systems. "Times have really changed. No thanks to free radicals that are present in almost everything around us-from the food we eat to the air we breathe-people today age so much faster. This is especially true for people who like to spend late nights partying or spend too much time in front of the [TV/computer] monitor. Various studies have proven time and again the harmful effects such activities have on our skin," Sy said.
But with Flawless' latest baby, you can say goodbye to those ugly marks on your face. The Stem Cell line promises to solve all these, and more, by providing your skin with the right amount of nutrition and protection. Indeed, youthful glow is not only safe and available in a bottle, it's also now within reach of your pocket.

Pope Pius XII issued a papal encyclical during WWII regarding the church as the mystical body of Christ. In that he stated, For in the Holy Eucharist the faithful are nourished and strengthened at the same banquet and by a divine, ineffable bond are united with each other, and with the Divine Head of the whole [church] Body.
For the Sisters of the Precious Blood in Dayton, this partaking of the Eucharist is of the utmost importance. Precious Blood stands both for Jesus shedding his blood on the cross and the symbols of precious blood that are offered daily in the Eucharist. One of those sisters, Sister Joyce Ann Zimmerman has recently completed a book, Red+Gold: A Spirituality of the Sisters of the Precious Blood for Everyone (published by Maria Stein Shrine of the Holy Relics, $10).
The book was directed to the laypeople we touch, so if they want to know more about what feeds and drives us, here is something they can use for prayer and meditation, said Sister Zimmerman, director of the Institute for Liturgical Ministry. The book is meant to lead to prayer and reflection.
Sister Zimmerman, who lives in Trotwood, describes her book as a comprehensive study of the unique expression of spirituality that has driven the Sisters of the Precious Blood for almost 200 years. The publication is divided into five sections, each with four two-page meditations. Each mediation ends with three statements that enable readers to reflect on how the meditation can be implemented in their own lives.
The idea of a book was sparked when Sister Zimmerman and Don Rosenbeck, administrator at Maria Stein Shrine of the Holy Relics, discussed new merchandise in the Maria Stein Shrine Pilgrim gift shop. Sister Zimmerman suggested a book on spirituality to help pilgrims to the shrine gain a deeper understanding of why the shrine is part of the congregations legacy and ministry.
Its not primarily directed to the sisters but to those with whom weve worked and taught, worshipped with, and been in contact with over the years, said Sister Zimmerman. Its to inform those people who have fallen in love with our spirituality.
She reiterated that the most important idea she wanted to impart to her readers was the two-pronged approach to the sisters spirituality. Some of the areas discussed in the book are spirituality, adoration, suffering, salvation, life, glory, sacrifice, self-offering, generosity and justice.
As Sisters of the Precious Blood we certainly reflect on, and are motivated by, Jesus shedding his blood on the cross, she said. But our (congregations) mother, Maria Anna Brunner, had a great devotion to the blessed sacrament, so Eucharist adoration from the very beginning has been our primary gift.
Mother Brunner founded the Sisters of the Precious Blood in 1834, and, according to the website, she adored the symbolism and partaking of the Eucharist. Sister Zimmerman loves to write about it, having written about 30 books and 300 articles. She started her publishing adventure 40 years ago with a text on catechetical aid in the early 1970s.
I just started the 16th volume of Living Liturgy, along with another sister and a priest. I do a lot of national conference work and I teach, said Sister Zimmerman, an adjunct professor at Athenaeum of Ohio in Cincinnati. I have started to let go of some major projects because I am busy writing.

(CNN) High above us, beyond the skies, is the International Space Station, which weighs nearly 1 million pounds and has a wingspan the length of a football field. It has nine rooms, two bathrooms, two kitchens and two mini-gyms, and it is the largest spacecraft orbiting the Earth.
NASA announced this week that an instrument called ISS-RapidScat will be launched to the station in 2014 to improve weather forecasts, by doing things like monitoring hurricanes. It will also help scientists explore the Earths global wind field; tropical clouds and tropical systems are affected by wind variations caused by the sun.
Another experiment on board is called InSPACE, which stands for Investigating the Structure of Paramagnetic Aggregates From Colloidal Emulsions. All that means that scientists are studying magnetorheological fluids, which are complex substances that change form or harden when exposed to magnetic fields. These substances could one day be useful in robots, NASA says, acting as a blood to make the movement of joints and limbs like that of a living creature.
Its mission is multifaceted. One of the space stations main goals is to find ways to extend the length of time a human can survive in space. Other experiments include growing cells where there is no gravity and observing bodily fluid changes in different atmospheres. In 2003, scientists aboard the station studied the behavior, mating activity and irregular motility responses of young flies they brought with them from Earth.
The International Space Station is the most complex scientific and technological endeavor ever undertaken, according to a NASA statement.
To lighten things up a bit (lets not forget the ISS is the astronauts workplace and their home), astronauts periodically capture breathtaking aerial views of the Earth, which they send back down to earthlings via Twitter. Recently, Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield did a video while on the space station about cutting your nails when theres no gravity.
It was former President Ronald Reagan who pushed the idea of a manned space station in Earths orbit. In what he called a new frontier at his 1984 State of the Union address, he acknowledged that (t)he Space Age is barely a quarter of a century old. But already weve pushed civilization forward with our advances and technology. Opportunities and jobs will multiply as we cross new thresholds of knowledge and reach deeper into the unknown.
Sixteen years later, the U.S. partnered with Russia, Canada, Japan and several European countries to launch the space station. Since it arrived in orbit, over 200 humans have visited the station.
None of the space agencies involved with the space station has confirmed exactly when it will deorbit, though some agencies hint that it may end some time after 2020. When the space station is decommissioned, it will likely drop from space into its new home the Pacific Ocean.
