Spike in debris, likely tsunami-related, covering NW beaches

Northwest beaches are seeing the spike in debris likely tsunami-related that had been forecast in federal agency models of where some of the 5 million tons of debris washed out to sea in the March 2011 Japan tsunami would land.

The Washington State Marine Debris Task Force sent out a press release Wednesday explaining that because of the increase in marine debris such as Styrofoam, plastic bottles and floats, and other portable objects extra trash cans were being set out on many beaches.

"While it is unknown whether the latest items arriving on state beaches are related to the March 11, 2011, tsunami that devastated Japan," the press release said, "according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, a portion of the debris that washed into the Pacific Ocean has been arriving on U.S. and Canadian shores, including Washington."

So far the extra trash bins have been placed at Ocean Shores, Surfside north of Long Beach, Grayland Beach State Park near Westport and the city of Long Beach's Bolstad Beach approach.

Alaska beaches hit hard

"See how you can see all the white Styrofoam floats on this point out here? Big globs of Styrofoam? That's all tsunami debris... And there's more Styrofoam out here. There's no question," Chris Pallister, president of the nonprofit Gulf of Alaska Keeper, told Alaska public radio.

The group was surveying the nearly 80 miles of pristine wilderness beach on Montague Island.

Last summer, the radio station reported, the state paid for an aerial survey to inspect 2,500 miles of Alaska's coastline. The survey identified tsunami debris all along the flight path.

"There was tsunami debris literally on every beach that was photographed," Elaine Busse Floyd, acting director of the division of environmental health, told KSKA. "They took over 8,000 pictures and it was more widespread and in greater quantities than we even expected."

RenewData® Webinar to Examine Unmet eDiscovery Market Needs and How Artificial Intelligence Fails to Address Them

AUSTIN, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

RenewData, a full-service eDiscovery provider that offers the industrys broadest spectrum of review acceleration solutions, today announced that it will host a webinar focused on the evolving needs in document review. Specifically, it will discuss why organizations are now looking not just for time and cost savings but also to gain a deeper understanding of what remaining documents mean early on in the review cycle. This knowledge extraction can be used for strategic advantage and additional savings and is quickly emerging as a market requirement.

The complimentary, educational webinar, titled Revolutionizing eDiscovery Document Review with Knowledge Extraction, is scheduled for February 19 at 1 p.m. EST / 10 a.m. PST. It will feature David Horrigan, analyst of eDiscovery and information governance for 451 Research, and Andy Kraftsow, chief scientist of RenewData.

Horrigan and Kraftsow will break down the legal, technical and market forces driving knowledge extraction as an important aspect of document review, and Kraftsow will provide a thorough yet easy to understand technical explanation of why it is particularly valuable to organizations involved in eDiscovery with large data volumes and short time frames and how it can best be applied.

The event will also analyze the limitations of artificial intelligence-powered solutions that attempt to predict document relevancy after an initial training of the system. These technologies are highly adept at identifying potentially relevant documents from a large collection, but often fall short of providing any additional insight i.e., knowledge extraction into what the remaining documents mean.

Global sports nutrition market to top $6 billion by 2018, report says

Revamped, more complete product lines that are connecting with new customers are driving growth in the sports nutrition market, according to a new report.

The report, by Global Industry Analysts, Inc., projects that the global market for sports and fitness nutrition supplements will reach $6.17 billion by 2018. The report lists as a key driver something that has been noted in recent product launches, namely the ramification of the market in terms of product offerings, target consumers and sales outlets.

Sports nutrition offerings have historically followed the market, the report notes. In years past, the people most devoted to sports and fitness were a select crew, either certain physically-active groups such as professional athletes or body builders who formed their won distinct subculture and spent most of their time in dedicated gyms. The exercise engaged in by most people was fairly gentle by modern standards.

Average Joes

Now, however, many more regular people have embraced far-ranging fitness goals even as, paradoxically, populations in the Western world continue to get fatter. Marathon running races in the US continue to set attendance records, and new branded fitness regimens like Zumba or CrossFit show up regularly.

The new customers groups that are increasingly becoming an area of interest for various sports and fitness nutrition supplement companies include weekend fitness or sports enthusiasts and people who are interested in maintaining their health by using supplement products, the reports authors note.

With growing interest from such users, sports nutrition products, which were previously available only in gyms and health food stores, are now available in mainstream mass market outlets such as super markets and convenience stores, they said.

Sports supplement manufacturers seeking a greater share of the market are therefore leveraging this trend and are investing substantially in research to develop novel products that can carry a natural claim, the authors note.

Move toward natural
