Dog-upuncture: Treating Pets With Human Medicine

There is a growing movement to treat animals with the best that human medicine has to offer, including physical therapy, hydro-therapy, and even alternative therapies -- acupuncture, to be precise.

When dog owner Joe Bowerman's beloved Shitzu, Snoot, was suffering from chronic back problems, which is common among the breed, and became paralyzed, Bowerman started looking into acupuncture treatments.

"He couldn't use his back," said Snoot's vet Leilani Alvarez of Animal Medical Center in New York City. "Acupuncture works primarily with the central nervous system, so there really isn't an equivalent conventional medicine."

Three million people in the United states use the ancient Chinese therapy for debilitating pain, to help them quit smoking, and more. But at Animal General Hospital, also in New York City, veterinarians are using it extensively for cases like Snoot's.

There, three acupuncture treatments a week cost a $100 a visit.

"You make sacrifices for the things you care about, things that you love," Joe said. "We all do it in a different way. This guy has given me great companionship, and I didn't want to lose him so I made those sacrifices for him."

Delilah's owner Mark Rindler swears that acupuncture made all the difference for the dachshund.

"She has a bad back, a back neck ... and acupuncture saved her life," he said. "We almost had to put her down last August she was in such bad shape. Medicine didn't help."

While animals can't verbalize whether the treatment works or not, their owners said they could see a difference.

Tour for Diversity in Medicine and Aetna Foundation Rev Up Third Bus Tour to Mentor Med-School-Bound Minority Students

HARTFORD, Conn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

The Tour for Diversity in Medicine, a volunteer program started by two young doctors, will launch its third bus tour the week of February 11, this time traveling to six Texas universities to help minority students pursue careers in medicine and dentistry. Thanks to a grant from the Aetna Foundation, 15 doctors, dentists and medical school students from across the country will travel more than 1,000 miles to provide full-day, hands-on workshops to undergrad students on six different campuses.

The Tour for Diversity in Medicine hopes to help diversify the health care profession by giving minority students the advice and tools theyll need to pursue medical careers. Although African Americans, Hispanics and Native Americans compose more than 26 percent of the U.S. population, they represent only 6 percent of practicing physicians and 5 percent of dentists, according to the Association of American Medical Colleges. In 2011, African-American and Hispanic students made up only 15 percent of all U.S. medical school applicants.1 Yet research shows that patients who receive care from doctors of the same background are more satisfied with their care and more engaged in their treatment.

Not only does todays physician workforce not reflect the growing diversity of our country, but this health equity gap is often most apparent in the at-risk minority communities that need help most. We are trying to make a tangible difference by going directly to students and showing them the changes that they can make for themselves and their communities by considering a career in medicine, said Alden Landry, M.D., co-founder of the Tour for Diversity in Medicine and an emergency department physician at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. Our tours address the national need for a more diverse physician population at a grassroots levelschool by school and student by student.

The week of February 11, the Tour for Diversity in Medicine will travel to the following universities in Texas:

As the United States becomes more racially and ethnically diverse, our nations health care providers must be able to respond to the wide variety of patient perspectives in order to provide the best possible care, said Gillian Barclay, D.D.S., Dr.PH., the Aetna Foundations vice president and director of national grant making. The Aetna Foundation is pleased to be a founding sponsor of the Tour for Diversity in Medicine and once again support these dedicated doctors as they help achieve more diversity in the next generation of health care providers. Our support for the tours is part of our ongoing work to develop health care leaders from underrepresented communities.

About 150 students from each school are expected to participate in the full-day program. There are sessions on the medical school application process, admissions tests, financial aid, interviewing skills, and an overview of health disparities. Students will interact one-on-one with mentors who will offer personal insights and share their experiences about how to build a successful career in medicine or dentistry.

Were excited to be back on the road and traveling to Texas to reach Hispanic and African-American students. We recognize that many students may not have the resources or information to seek out medical school recruitment fairs on their own, so we come directly to campus to help spark interest in health care careers, said Kameron Matthews, M.D., J.D., co-founder of the Tour for Diversity in Medicine and medical director of the Division Street site of Erie Family Health Center in Chicago. By offering student workshops with doctors who come from similar backgrounds, we are helping students overcome perceived barriers to entering the medical profession and showing them what steps theyll need to take to build a fulfilling career.

Additional support for the Texas Tour comes from the U.S. Army, AAMC, American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine, and American Dental Education Association. FIU medical school gets full accreditation

Florida International University announced Thursday that full accreditation has been granted to its Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine.

FIU President Mark Rosenberg called the news one of the most significant moments in the history of FIU.

The Liaison Committee on Medical Education awarded full accreditation, the final step in a five-stage process that FIU has been working toward since it hired surgeon John Rock as dean of the school in 2006.

The news comes as the college gets set this spring to graduate its inaugural class of 33 students. The school is now in the midst of selecting its fifth class, which will consist of 120 candidates picked from 3,946 applicants.

Accreditation allows our students to realize their dreams of becoming licensed medical doctors, said Rock. Im proud of our faculty, our students, our clinical partners and what we have built together a medical school that educates clinically and culturally competent 21st century physicians.

The LCME is the accrediting authority for medical education programs leading to the M.D. degree in United States and Canadian medical schools. State licensing boards require graduation from an LCME-accredited school to be eligible for an M.D. license.

Virgin Media snagged for $23.3B by Liberty Global

Liberty Global says the deal creates the "world's leading broadband communications company," covering 47 million homes and 25 million customers across 14 countries.

"Talk is cheap," except when it really isn't.

U.S. media conglomerateLiberty Global announced last night that it would acquire Virgin Media[PDF] for $23.3 billion, a figure that will likely send shivers down the spine of media rival News Corp. chief executive Rupert Murdoch.

The announcement came just hours after Dell, with the help of Silver Lake and Microsoft, paid more than $24 billion to pull out of the stock market.

Following the handshake on the deal, Liberty Global is already touting the deal as the creation of the "world's leading broadband communications company," covering 47 million homes and 25 million customers across 14 countries.

Little will change for end users and customers of Virgin Media, though -- even the company name will remain the same.

But there are finer points to the deal.

Shareholders in the British cable firm will receive cash and Liberty Global shares for an implied priceof $47.87 in cash per Virgin Media share they hold, a premium of 24 percent on Virgin Media's closing price on February 4.

Virgin Media shareholders will own around 36 percent of Liberty Global's outstanding shares, and hold just over one-quarter of the voting rights. The cash element to the closing price totals $5.9 billion and will be financed through debt financing and available liquidity.

The deal will go through by forming a new holding company. Liberty Global will redomicile from the U.S. state of Delaware to the U.K. by becoming a subsidiary of a new publicly limited holding company.

Liberty Mutual gears up for the Olympics with its Team USA sponsorship

By Chris Reidy, Globe Staff

Boston-based Liberty Mutual Insurance is celebrating its four-year sponsorship of Team USA with kick-off ceremonies Thursday that include such famous Olympic athletes as Aly Raisman, Michelle Kwan, and Mike Eruzione.

Why the timing? Because exactly one year from today the Winter Olympics are scheduled to start in Sochi, Russia, said Paul Alexander, Liberty Mutuals chief communications officer.

For the record, Liberty Mutual Insurance is an official sponsor of the USOC and of the 2014 US Olympic and Paralympic Teams in as well as a sponsor of those teams in the 2016 games in Rio de Janeiro. The sponsorship designates Liberty Mutual Insurance as the official property and casualty and life insurance partner

One reason to sponsor an Olympic team is to boost employee morale. But a more important one is that the sponsorship will enable Liberty Mutual to scale up its brand, Alexander said.

For the last five or so years, Liberty Mutuals marketing mantra has been: Responsibility. Whats your policy?

Were looking to leverage our responsibility positioning, and there are few better ways to do that than to be a sponsor of Team USA and the Olympics, Alexander said.

Being an Olympic sponsor can also raise the companys profile worldwide as it looks to grow overseas. Last year, for example, an acquisition helped Liberty Mutual enter the Russian market.

And one of the companys biggest international markets is Brazil, site of the summer games in 2016.

Solomon Islands hit by five-foot tsunami, leaving six dead (+video)

A tsunami hit the Solomon Islands, leaving six reported deaths and damaging between 70 and 80 homes and properties. The tsunami followed an 8.0 earthquake near the Pacific Island chain.

A powerful earthquake off the Solomon Islands on Wednesday generated a tsunami of up to 1.5 meters (about 5 feet) that damaged dozens of homes and left several people missing and presumed dead in the South Pacific island chain.

Authorities canceled tsunami warnings on more distant coasts.

Solomons officials reported two 1.5-meter (4 foot, 11-inch) waves hit the western side of Santa Cruz Island, damaging between 70 and 80 homes and properties, said George Herming, a spokesman for the prime minister. Many villagers had headed to higher ground as a precaution, Herming said.

Solomon Islands Police Commissioner John Lansley said local police patrols reported that several people were presumed dead, though the reports were still being verified.

"Sadly, we believe some people have lost their lives," he said. "At the moment we potentially know of four, but there may of course be more."

Six people have been reported killed, according to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, quoting local police.

One of the people presumed dead was fishing in a dugout canoe when the first wave hit, sweeping him out to sea, Herming said. Officials were searching for his body. Another woman was believed to have drowned when the water rushed into her village, Herming said.
