Nutrition Advocates Blast Marketing of Girl Scouts' Newest Cookie

Nutrition advocates chose National Girl Scout Cookie Day to take the organization to task for marketing the organization's newest cookie as "a delicious new way to get your vitamins."

"It's bad enough that the Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. sells cookies to raise money, but it shouldn't pretend that its new 'Mango Crmes with NutriFusion' are nutritionally equivalent to fruit," said the Center for Science in the Public Interest, which fired off a letter Friday to Girl Scouts CEO Anna Maria Chvez.

On the Web page for the cookie's baker, ABC Bakers claims that the cookie's mango-flavored crme filling has "all the nutrient benefits of eating cranberries, pomegranates, oranges, grapes and strawberries."

If there were a badge for misleading marketing, Im afraid the Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. just earned it, said Margo Wootan, director of nutrition policy for CSPI.

In the letter, CSPI asks the Girl Scouts to immediately stop promoting the cookies as "healthful" and "find a healthier way to raise funds."

This isn't the first time the CSPI has gone after the Girl Scouts for adding to the childhood obesity rates with its cookie promotions. Last year, the CSPI took the Girl Scouts to task for a licensing deal with Nestl to co-brand candy bars.

The Girl Scouts were not immediately available for comment.

Public release date: 8-Feb-2013 [ | E-mail | Share ]

Contact: Garth Hogan ghogan@asmusa.org 202-942-9389 American Society for Microbiology

WASHINGTON, DC February 5, 2013 What do microbes have to do with beer? Everything! Because the master ingredient in beer is yeast a microbe and every step in the brewing process helps the yeast do its job better. A new freely-available report; FAQ: If the Yeast Ain't Happy, Ain't Nobody Happy: The Microbiology of Beer explores the synergy between microbiology and brewing beer.

"Every time someone brews a batch of beer, in a very real sense he or she is doing a microbiology experiment. If you brew beer at home, you're a microbiologist.' says Dr. Charles Bamforth of the University of California, Davis, a member of the steering committee that produced the report.

The American Academy of Microbiology brought together some of the world's leading experts on yeast, brewing and food science to explain how making great beer depends on creating the perfect conditions for yeast to work its magic. Keeping the yeast happy, it turns out, is what will make or break your beer batch.

FAQ: The Microbiology of Beer is based on the deliberations of 18 participants who convened for a day to discuss the relationship between microbiology and beer brewing.

The FAQ answers 6 common questions:

All of the answers are straightforward and limited to two pages each for easier understanding. Important terms and concepts are introduced as needed and fully explained. Sidebars on topics like yeast genealogy and fermentation round out the 12 page report.

FAQ: The Microbiology of Beer is part of a series of reports designed to provide easy to understand explanations about the roles microbes play in the world, from cleaning up oil spills to causing epidemics, to producing many useful products. The FAQ series reports are based on the deliberations of 15-20 microbiology experts who meet for a single day to develop answers to frequently asked questions about a specific topic.

Longevity' Bond Market May Spring to Life

Insurers are weighing a new strategy for coping with the cost of baby boomers living longer than expected: issuing bonds.

Banks began shopping at least two "longevity" bonds to potential investors in recent weeks, the biggest spurt of activity the fledgling market has seen. One is expected to close in late March.

The bonds are sold with assumptions about how long people in the issuer's pool will live. Bondholders receive regular payments, but may see their principal eroded if the issuer needs money to plug any shortfall in its reserves caused by longer life spans.

Corporate pension plans and life insurers pay for their own protection against longevity, through insurers and reinsurers, respectively. Those insurers and their reinsurers could then use longevity bonds to transfer some of their risk to investors.

The first longevity bond was a $50 million issue in December 2010 from Swiss Re's (SREN.VX) Kortis Capital Ltd. The bond matures in January 2017 and it priced at an interest rate of 472 basis points over the six-month London interbank offered rate, a benchmark.

The next came from Dutch insurer Aegon N.V. (AEG), which in February 2012 brought a EUR300 million ($402 million) longevity bond arranged by Deutsche Bank to cover EUR12 billion of reserves. Aegon is back with its second deal, investors said.

Chris Madsen, head of risk structuring and transfer at Aegon, declined to talk about future deals. "We have received requests from several investors to participate in the old transaction or in future transactions," he said.

The market hasn't seen regular sales, primarily because investors were worried about the length of the bonds and the lack of active secondary-market trading allowing for a quick exit, said Pascal Koller, who invested in the Kortis deal and works for $20 billion Swiss asset manager LGT Capital Management.

Mr. Koller called longevity bonds "the holy grail for banks."

Investors may be more receptive to a run of deals this year, traders say, because the bonds offer rich yields at a time when low interest rates and booming demand are keeping yields on other types of debt low, said Niklaus Hilti, head of insurance-linked strategies at Credit Suisse Asset Management, who oversees $5.3 billion.

LIFE SCIENCE PRIZE--BIOLOGY ELIMINATES EVOLUTION
FOLLOWING ARE FACTS EVOLUTIONISTS DON #39;T WANT PEOPLE TO KNOW. For years, the claim has been made that evolution is an inverted-fantasy religion taught in the public schools in violation of the First Amendment of the Constitution of the United States of America. The Debate Dodgers (see below) unanimously have failed to defend in court against that claim. Therefore, the default-judgment applies to all evolutionists in general and particularly those on the Debate Dodgers List. This is proof positive that evolution is an inverted-fantasy religion taught in the public schools in violation of the First Amendment of the Constitution of the United States of America. Evidently, evolution is devoid of scientific evidence. As an acid test of that finding, the most outspoken evolutionists worldwide bar none were challenged to contend for the Life Science Prize. The rules and results follow. These data confirm the scientific peer reviewed articles of objective, valid, reliable, and calibrated evidence that evolution exists nowhere in the universe, never has, never will, except as an inverted fantasy based on vitalism superstitions 2500 years old. Rules and FAQ #39;s for the Life Science Prize: http://www.lifescienceprize.org Evolution is more impossible than the Tooth Fairy, Santa Claus, and the Headless Horseman. Of the simplest machines, a toothpick has no moving parts. Of the most complex of machines, a protein has the highest of manufacturing requirements. Given every tree on the planet and ...

Hurricanes: No athletes positive for steroids

CORAL GABLES, Fla. -

Miami officials released a statement Thursday night saying that more than 10,000 drug tests performed by the university since 2005 have resulted in no positive results for anabolic steroids by its athletes.

The statement came amid reports that the school and its baseball program has been linked to an ongoing Major League Baseball investigation into whether players many of whom either train at or played collegiately at Miami have been getting performance-enhancing drugs from anti-aging clinics in South Florida.

It's a rare step for Miami, which as a private institution typically does not release sensitive information such as details of its drug-testing policy publicly.

Miami officials released the following statement:

"The University of Miami's comprehensive drug testing policy, enacted in 1995, continues to evolve as the methods and reliability of testing have improved and as more drugs have been introduced into the world of competitive sports.

The University's program is monitored by a University committee, which includes medical professionals, and is overseen by a Medical Review Officer--currently, a former UM Miller School of Medicine physician--who ensures the integrity and confidentiality of the drug testing program. An outside third-party firm administers the tests and provides results to the University.

Since 2005, approximately 3,380 student-athletes have been tested more than 10,000 times by the University, in addition to drug tests administered by the NCAA. During that period, no student-athlete has tested positive for anabolic steroids. The University of Miami, like many of our peer institutions, the NCAA and many professional sports leagues, does not currently test for Human Growth Hormones.

The University of Miami's drug testing policy is consistent with those at most NCAA Division I programs and provides more stringent penalties--including game suspensions for first-time positive results--than many of our peers.

As stated last week, we have initiated an internal review involving an employee and will continue to monitor developments."

What Causes Early Puberty in Girls?

While most are stunned by the news that a 9-year-old girl who had been raped gave birth in Mexico, doctors have known for years that the average age of puberty is declining.

A landmark 1997 study in the journal Pediatrics prompted a redefinition of early onset puberty, from 8 to 7 among Caucasian girls and 7 to 6 among African-American girls for early breast development.

While age of puberty is decreasing, the number of girls entering puberty early is increasing: about 16 percent of girls enter puberty by the age of 7, and about 30 percent by the age of 8, according to one study.

The main question is, Why?

A study publishedrecentlyin the journal Nature Neuroscience seems to have fit another piece into the puzzle, when researchers were able to delay puberty in female rats by manipulating protein levels. They discovered a group of proteins that regulate the activity of a gene called the Kiss1 gene, which is required for puberty to occur.

Study author Serjio Ojeda, a neuroscientist and professor in the Oregon Health & Science UniversitySchool of Medicine, says that his teams findings raise the possibility that environmental factors play a role in early onset puberty.

"It poses the question as to how are these epigenetic mechanisms responding to the environment?" he said. "These are difficult questions we haven't answered yet. Is it nutrition, man-made chemicals? That's the next step, how can we connect these environmental stimuli?"

"That's the crystal ball question," agrees Dr. William Crowley, Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, the Chief of the Reproductive Endocrine Unit of the Department of Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital, who has studied early onset puberty for 35 years but was not involved in Ojeda's study.

The research is starting to coalesce, he said.

"The tipping point is very close," he said. "It's like when you're paddling down a great river and it gets very quiet just before the falls, and it looks pretty benign until you start to hear a dull roar. That's the kind of sense everybody has right now; you can kind of hear a dull roar."

Captain Kirk calls Chris Hadfield at space station

Canadian actor William Shatner, best known as Star Trek's Captain Kirk, hailed the International Space Station and chatted with Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield this morning about the risks faced in space and rumours that Hadfield has volunteered to go to Mars.

Over the casual, 10-minute conversation, Shatner asked Hadfield about the dangers of going into space, especially to a place such as Mars.

Hadfield, whose side of the conversation was broadcast over a video link, responded that people like him are inspired to take such risks by both the astronauts that have come before him and fictional ones such as Star Trek's Captain Kirk.

"The risks are infinitely worthwhile," he added.

Hadfield didn't directly address whether he had volunteered to go to Mars, but said he thinks it is "inevitable" that some astronaut one day will. "It's just a matter of when we figure out how."

Kirk asked Hadfield how he has coped with fear while working as both a test pilot and an astronaut. Hadfield likened the fear to that of an actor not knowing his script, and said he coped by making sure he always "knew my lines."

Shatner pointed out that the consequences of making a mistake are not comparable in the two jobs.

"In my case, your face flushes and you get a sheen of flop sweat," he said. "In your case, you burn up. It's a little different."

Hadfield responded with a laugh, "Well, in both cases, you go down in flames one's figurative and one is not."

Shatner also asked Hadfield about being away from Earth for six months: "That's a long time to be away, is it not?"
