Health is the prevailing topic of this year's John W. Stormont Conference on South Texas.

The conference will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday in the Victoria College Student Center.

Guest lecturers will talk on medicine and health culture. The conference is free and open to the public.

The eight lectures begin following a short welcome and introductions of guest speakers. Each of the talks will last about 20 minutes and will be followed by a question-and-answer session.

Ann Kapp, co-chairwoman of the conference along with Lisa DeVries, said the format was changed to a conference this year, and a call was sent for academic papers.

"We hope this will be a way for students to observe scholarly activity," Kapp said. "They can see what you do when you present a paper."

Research lacking in some alternative medicine programs

Feb. 18, 2013, 12:05 a.m.

If you were a medical student, would you want to be taught by a faculty that did no research? It's generally expected that medical lecturers are involved in ongoing research.

But there seems to be a different standard for departments that teach complementary and alternative medicine. Many don't appear to be doing research. That's the message from the Excellence in Research for Australia exercise, which ranks the quality of university research.

According to ERA results released late last year, every university that teaches conventional medicine produced enough research to get an ERA ranking. However, most departments that teach complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) fail to do enough research to be counted in the ERA.

Only one university, the University of Western Sydney, had done enough research in the field of CAM to be assessed in the ERA.

UWS received a five, or "well above world standard", for its work. The university offers a bachelor of health sciences/master in traditional Chinese medicine and a master of health science in acupuncture. It also has a CAM research centre, which conducts clinical trials.

Universities such as RMIT, Victoria, Macquarie, Southern Cross (Lismore campus), Central Queensland, Murdoch, Charles Sturt and the University of Technology, Sydney, offer CAM courses.

RMIT has the largest number of degrees in areas such as chiropractic, Chinese medicine and osteopathy. The university also offers a masters in wellness taught primarily online. Students "undergo a personal wellness journey" and can select units such as herbs and natural supplements, food as medicine, yoga fundamentals and aromatherapy for wellness.

RMIT was not assessed in the ERA in the field of complementary and alternative medicine.

The growth in alternative medical courses has worried some scientists. In late 2011, a group of doctors including John Dwyer, emeritus professor of medicine at UNSW, set up Friends of Science in Medicine. It now has about 1000 supporters.

Despite high cost and residency shortage, Florida sees interest rise in medical school

This is one of three stories related to people choosing to go into the medical profession and the costs and challenges they face. Return to naplesnews.com through Monday to read all of the articles or pick up a copy of Sunday's Daily News.

* * * * *

The third article will focus on doctors who didn't repay their taxpayer-supported loans, which is the reason for the database at the bottom of this article. That factor doesn't relate to the people interviewed for this particular article.

NAPLES Young doctors not only must survive the academic rigors of medical school, today's realities include skyrocketing tuition and potentially greater competition for choice post-graduate residencies, industry officials say.

Still, medical schools are seeing an uptick in applications and studies show a career in medicine still offers a good lifestyle, said Steven Specter, associate dean for student affairs at the University of South Florida's (USF) College of Medicine in Tampa.

That's despite average student loan debt of $150,000 or more, he said.

"The value of a medical education is very clearly shown. Even with a couple hundred thousand in debt, it is still a good investment," he said. "The number of medical school applications is up, not down, so (the debt) is not driving people away in droves."

When it comes to post-graduate residency training, which ranges from three to five years depending on the specialty, Florida has 3,500 slots but needs 2,700 more, according to the Council of Florida Medical School Deans.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott wants to expand graduate medical education to add 700 slots at a cost of $80 million, according to his 2013 budget proposal. His plan is backed by the Florida Medical Association.

Scott recognizes the need for more residency slots to retain and attract young doctors and ease the doctor shortage, said Christiane Mitchell, director of federal affairs for the Association of American Medical Colleges in Washington, D.C.

Liberty Medical files for chapter 11 bankruptcy

SALEM, Va.

Liberty Medical Supply Inc., which has an operation in Salem, has filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, according to CEO Frank Harvey.

"What that means is it gives us the breathing space we need to reorganize while still continuing to serve our patients and run our operations," Harvey said in a phone interview.

Liberty Medical announced in early December that it would lay off 200 workers. Two weeks later, the company announced a minimum 20 percent pay cut for employees. The layoffs take effect this month.

Harvey says the company has over 100 employees in Salem now, and Liberty Medical expects to stay at that level.

"Any time you have to lay off employees, and these are good people, you know its hard, but you have to make the right business decisions for the company in order for the company to survive," Harvey said.

According to court documents cited by the Chicago Tribune, Liberty Medical Supply Inc. lists assets and liabilities of between $100 million and $500 million.

Harvey cited companies like American Airlines, US Air, and General Motors that have gone through chapter 11.

"Its a business tool used by companies quite frequently when theyre facing issues that wouldnt allow them to be successful in the long term if they didnt address those," Harvey said. "(It) could be three to twelve months as we move through chapter 11, but were confident Liberty will come out on the other side stronger than ever."

Liberty Medical is based in Port St. Lucie, Fla.

Liberty fends off Oak Hill

OAK HILL Liberty coach Aaron Pauley left the Lilly Center Saturday a pretty satisfied man.

We knew wed have to grind this one out, Pauley said after his Raiders got some daylight in the fourth quarter of a matinee game against host Oak Hill and eventually earned a 55-46 verdict. This is one of the best wins weve had for a while.

In a contest that featured key runs by both teams, the Raiders got the biggest one at the outset of the final period. Leading 33-31, Liberty proceeded on a 9-0 tear that included a foul line jumper by Trevor McGhee, a 3-point play by Levi Cook, a deuce by Cook following a lob pass from Tre McDowell, and a turnaround jumper on the baseline by Cook the latter which left the Raiders owning a 42-31 spread at the 4:58 mark.

Oak Hills Joey Re responded with seven consecutive points, which included a 3-pointer and a strong inside move, to trim the deficit to four, 42-38, but the Raiders maintained their composure and eventually stretched the lead back out to 10 points, 50-40.

We told the kids Levi was eventually going to get some looks, said Pauley. The biggest part for us was our movement away from the ball.

Oak Hill led 10-2 in the early going before Liberty gained an 18-16 lead on a 2-pointer by McGhee off a Cook assist with 2:47 left in the first half. The Red Devils later regained control at 29-22 with an 8-0 spurt that featured four points by Marc Logan and two each by Re and Kadrin Goodman.

However, Libertys Cook answered, scoring on a hook shot and on a putback that resulted in a 3-point play to make it 29-27. With Oak Hill up 31-27, Liberty closed the third with six quick points in transition and set the stage for the pivotal fourth.

Oak Hill coach Walt Raines felt the closing stages of the third quarter was the key for Liberty. They (gained) the momentum when the big kid (Cook) had three straight long passes, Raines said. After that scoring stretch, Liberty started clearing it out and posting up, and that made it tough for us.

We had great effort, but youve got to reward your effort by scoring, Raines added, pointing to a 29 percent shooting performance for his squad.

Cook finished with 25 points, 14 rebounds, four blocked shots and four assists to pace the Liberty effort. McGhee added nine points and four assists
