South West beaches rated 'best'

21 February 2013 Last updated at 14:20 ET

Seven of the "best" beaches in the UK are in the South West, according to holidaymakers.

The Traveller Choice Beach Awards were voted for by TripAdvisor's online reviewers.

Woolacombe in Devon which came second - beaten only by Rhossili Bay in Swansea - was also rated as the fifth best beach in Europe.

Two of Cornwall's beaches made the top 10, while Dorset had three and Jersey had one.

Cornwall did particularly well in the awards, with Porthminister beach in St Ives rated as third best in the UK and ninth best in Europe, while Perranporth was ranked in thirteenth place and Godrevy Head in Hayle came twenty-fifth.

Malcolm Bell, head of Tourism Cornwall, said the results were "great" for the county.

"Cornwall is blessed with two magnificent coasts, wonderful fishing harbours as well as over 300 beaches and it is great news that TripAdvisor users have recognised not only the quantity of beaches but more importantly their quality."

Parks, beaches may be next target for smoking bans

By Jennifer Curington, Staff Writer

TALLAHASSEE Local governments would get the authority to ban smoking at beaches, parks, sports facilities and other outdoor areas under a bill moving through the Florida Legislature but enforcement would begin with a warning.

SB 258, by Sen. Rob Bradley, R-Orange Park, unanimously passed the Regulated Industries committee today. It would extend to local governments the smoking-ban powers now held exclusively by the state, which has used them to bar smoking in restaurants and public buildings for the past decade. Bradleys bill has two more committees to face.

But the bill was amended by Sen. John Thrasher, R-St. Augustine, to allow police officers to first warn a smoker that he or she had lit up in a banned area. If the smoker didnt extinguish his butt, the officer could first ask her to leave and, if the smoker refuses, issue a civil violation that could cost up to $100. Subsequent offenses could result in a fine of up to $500.

Nobody wants to put anybody in jail for doing any of these things, but it does send a signal that, look, the state wants to be smoke-free eventually, Thrasher said. I hope we are because I think its a detriment to our health and welfare.

Outdoor smoking bans have become increasingly popular nationally; New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has even prohibited smoking in the citys iconic Central Park. Many Florida colleges including the University of Central Florida and Valencia State College have banned smoking on campus. And cleanup volunteers say the biggest source of trash on Palm Beach County beaches is cigarette butts, according to a Palm Beach Post report, prompting a push there for a smoking ban.

Rep. Bill Hager, R-Delray Beach, has filed a similar bill that has been referred to three committees has yet to be heard in any of them.

The Florida Restaurant and Lodging Association which fought against smoking bans in restaurants for years has expressed concerns about the bill. Among them: that customers at outdoor tables could lose their right to smoke.

Aerospace is the broader term that includes activities related to manmade flight in the earth's atmosphere and outer space. Aviation is a subset of aerospace, referring to activities related to manmade flight within earth's atmosphere.

Nutrition cluster holds but DSM profits slide 27% as recession bites

Royal DSM saw 2012 EBIT (operating) profits fall 27% to 635m from 866m in 2011 but the human and animal nutrition business it has invested 2.4bn in since 2010 added 6% in profit.

Nutrition EBIT profits grew from 577m in 2011 to 613m in 2012 with sales up 9% to 3.667bn and boosted by the 900m Ocean Nutrition Canada and Fortitech acquisitions in the year along with other animal and human nutrition investments.

Omega-3s and blends were singled out as star performers in the division that includes cultures and enzymes, carotenoids, vitamins and minerals.

Board member Stephan Tanda told us the company's Martek (2011) and ONC buys meant it could handle all omega-3 demands, even high-end pharma requirements although the company was not particularly active there now, preferring to focus on food and supplements. It was however,"keeping an eye" on the omega-3 drug patent landscape where blockbuster drugs were coming off-patent.

Feike Sijbesma, CEO/chairman of the DSM managing board, praised the nutrition division performance which he noted contributed 70% to the Dutch firms EBITDA profits of 1.1bn.

The company forecast for EBITDA of 1.4bn in 2013 remained intact despite a 'problematic Europe'that remains deep in recession, according to Tanda.

Forecasts intact

You have to remember we lost about 300m in the caprolactam nylon business in 2012. It suffered from weakness in demand so with that excluded our 1.4bn EBITDA profit forecast for GDP plus 2% remains intact, Tanda said.

He added: Europe continues as a problem and Brazil and latin America could be stronger, but the US market is picking up, and China and Asia remains in growth. It is true that it is not a pretty situation in Europe though.

Haworth council may strip longevity pay from non-union workers

HAWORTH Non-union employees who work for the municipal government objected to any ending of longevity pay for current workers a move that officials have considered.

Elizabeth Rosenberg, the Haworth Library Director, read from a letter from the nine non-contractual employees at the Feb. 13 council meeting to address their concerns about having longevity pay removed.

Rosenberg said the letter was written for all nine members in attendance, including the library employees and those at borough hall, who are full-time, as opposed to her speaking for herself.

"When were first began working for the Borough, some of us more than 20 years ago, we were offered financial compensation which was in most cases below industry standards for the jobs we were to perform with the understanding that the benefits promised would make up the difference in our compensation," Rosenberg said. "As these benefits were codified in the boroughs ordinances, we had no reason not to believe that these parts of our total compensation would be taken away later, after many years of dedicated service."

At the last couple of council meetings, the council discussed the possibility of changing longevity pay with one option being to remove longevity for new hires, or freeze it going forward for existing employees without taking away anything accrued.

Mayor John Dean DeRienzo has said he is against taking away longevity pay from the existing employees. Councilwoman Mary Anne Groh said taking away longevity pay would not automatically mean no raises, but instead employees could be given merit bonuses or raises.

Councilman Andrew Rosenberg said question 47 on the 2013 Best Practices Checklist asks whether the town has eliminated longevity awards, and at present the council has to answer with a "no," which negatively impacts the boroughs score, which in turn affects how much state aid it receives.

"The issue at hand regarding longevity is that the Governor, in setting Best Practice Standards for counties and municipalities, has suggested phasing out longevity pay, and it appears, based on the comments made at the last council meeting, that there is a consensus to end any longevity pay for future hires, although having said that, no formal vote has taken place," Councilman Anthony Volpe said.

"Where there appears to be potentially more debate is the notion of freezing longevity paid to current employees," Volpe said. "Essentially that would mean whatever longevity pay was earned up until a predetermined date by existing employees would [be] kept and no further longevity pay could be earned."

Andrew Rosenberg said the borough would like to retain more control.
