Liberty Baseball Team Getting New Stadium

Lynchburg, VA - Liberty University is putting the finishing touches on its new baseball stadium.

The school says it will be ready in time for the team's first home game.

The entire field, except for the pitcher's mound, is made up entirely of Astroturf. The coach says they'll be able to play more games on it and it'll be easier to maintain.

Instead of cheering fans, the buzz of power tools surrounds Liberty University's new baseball stadium.

The team took to the field for their first practice on Wednesday, which is sitting in the middle of a construction zone.

"Everything isn't done yet. But we're gonna have turf to play on, hopefully the dugouts will be done, open up a little concession stand and hopefully get a lot of fans out here this weekend," said Head Coach Jim Toman.

The school says weather, not construction has delayed the Flames' first home game against Penn State until Saturday.

But the head coach is confident the Astroturf will give them a home field advantage.

"Basically, we're gonna be able to practice a lot more and we're not gonna get rained out," said Coach Toman.

Center fielder Ryan Cordell hopes the new facility will improve his batting average.

Fox’s The Five Asks: Is America Ready For A ‘Libertarian-Minded’ President?

After Sen. Rand Paul asserted this weekend that America might be ready for a libertarian Republican presidency, Foxs The Five debated whether that is actually true.

Is America ready for a libertarian president or really just saying a small government person with less military output? co-host Greg Gutfeld asked his panelists after a monologue on what hed like to see in a future president.

I think they often are considered too controversial because of their positions on legalizing pot, which now has become more mainstream; and legalizing prostitution, that a lot of conservatives cant wrap their arms around, Andrea Tantaros explained. Rand Paul is different. I like him a lot. I think that he speaks the truth. He is very, very tough. He doesnt go back and forth. He is not his father, she said, apparently missing the memo that Rands father, Ron Paul (R-TX), was considered one of the most consistent members of Congress throughout his career.

A lot of people say, Id love to vote Republican but I cant because of the social issues, Tantaros continued, before suggesting that if we had someone more liberal we could get voters and open up the big tent. She added that social conservatisms blunders like Todd Akin give the Democrats an opportunity to make Republicans look bad.

Liberal co-host Bob Beckel surmised that Rand Pauls newfound hero status among the GOP is a sign that the bench for the Republicans, which we kept talking about as being mighty strong, is not nearly as strong.

Conservative Eric Bolling chimed in that his problem with libertarians is the whole thing about smaller military. His compromise was to come out in favor of Chris Christie for 2016, noting that he likes his big personality.

When Richard Rush walked onto the campus that was to become CSU Channel Islands, he saw water pouring down a wall with exposed wires, a broken pipe repaired with a strip of cloth and rats occupying what is now the Grand Salon.

We had more large raccoons than I had ever seen in my life, said Rush, president of the Camarillo university, whose campus used to be a state hospital. And they claimed ownership.

Since then, the university has won awards for its environmental practices, community work and for being a great college to work for. As Channel Islands celebrates its 10th anniversary this year, its also developing new projects, including a boating center at Channel Islands Harbor and a partnership

with the National Park Service to build a research station on Santa Rosa Island.

More Expats Are Heading To The Cayman Islands Than Ever Before

The Cayman Islands has seen a rise in foreign workers despite increasing levies they pay and announcing plans to lift the lid on the tax haven.

The British overseas territory saw its number of foreign workers increase from 19,927 at the end of 2011 to hit almost 21,000 by December 2012, according to the latest figures.

The higher numbers are mainly due to the relaxation of immigration laws which included new five and 10-year work permits for those working in the reinsurance industry.

The Cayman Islands government has also started offering work permits for foreigners investing in its property sector.

These measures have more than helped counteract any expected fall in foreign workers due to a hike in work permit fees.

Last July, the then Cayman Islands premier McKeeva Bush announced controversial plans for a tax on expats salaries. But this was scrapped for fear of scaring off investors and workers, so work permit fees were increased as a consolation.

The rising foreign worker numbers also come at the same times as the Cayman Islands slowly lifts its cloak of secrecy which could result in billions of pounds leaving the territory.

The Cayman Islands have long been seen as a tax haven for the wealthy and secretive thanks to its light money laundering and disclosure rules. Monies held there also enjoy freedom from income tax, along with capital gains and corporation tax.

But pressure is mounting on the worlds fifth largest financial centre to be more transparent and open about investors cash to bring it in line with the likes of London, Switzerland and the Channel Islands, which have all introduced greater accountability.

In response the Cayman Islands Monetary Authority is introducing reforms that will make public the names of thousands of companies and their directors that have previously remained secret.

Better Health Care Through Electronic Records Program

Better Health Care Through Electronic Records Program

Helps Doctors Treat Chronic Conditions

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, Deputy for Health and Human Services Linda I. Gibbs, Health Commissioner Thomas A. Farley announced that the use of electronic health records has led to better health outcomes for tens of thousands New Yorkers in the critical areas of high blood pressure management, diabetes and tobacco control.

New York Citys introduction of electronic health records, which has become a national model, was a result of the Primary Care Information Project, a program that began in 2005 to help medical providers, particularly those with underserved patients, use technology to improve the quality and efficiency of health care. The prompts that electronic health records give doctors, such as signaling a daily dose of aspirin to prevent heart disby ease or follow up questions for someone who smokes, make a dramatic difference in how aggressively they treat the chronic health conditions of their patients.

Through 3,200 primary care providers serving more than three million New Yorkers with electronic health records, over 96,000 additional patients reduced their high blood pressure, 81,000 patients improved their diabetes management and an additional 58,000 smokers were given assistance and successfully quit.

Our Administration has focused on improving health care in New York by empowering health care providersat every levelas well as their patients, said Bloomberg. Weve focused on expanding the use of preventive care to tackle some of the biggest health challenges we face: heart and respiratory diseases; diabetes; and high blood pressure. The development and expanded use of electronic health records has given doctors the tools to improve both the length and quality of New Yorkers lives and it is rewarding to see the program become a national model.

A small number of services that can be delivered in doctors offices are proven to prevent common diseases like heart disease and cancer, but these services are not used enough, added Farley. The Primary Care Information Project has now shown that, through the help of information technology, primary care providers can substantially improve their delivery of these services, thereby improving the health of many thousands of patients.

By helping doctors care for patients better, PCIP has helped tens of thousands of New Yorkers avoid heart attacks, strokes, and death at a young age, said Dr. Tom Frieden, director of the Centers for Disease Control. PCIP shows that when the guiding principle is getting the most health benefit, health records can improve patient health dramatically.

The Primary Care Information Project was started in New York City by Dr. Farzad Mostashari under then- Health Commissioner Frieden as a $27 million city initiative to use technology to improve the quality and efficiency of health care throughout the five boroughs, especially in some of New York Citys medically underserved neighborhoods: East and Central Harlem, the South Bronx, and Central Brooklyn.

More than 3,200 medical providers treating three million New Yorkers received electronic health record software and training to learn how to use it in their practices.

4 ways to control your health care costs

(CNN) The health care debate is full of numbers: 48.6 million uninsured Americans; $2.6 trillion spent on health care annually; family premiums that have increased 97% over the past decade.

But those numbers are abstract and hold little meaning for Americans struggling to pay their medical bills.

Perhaps a more accurate number is $3,200: the average out-of-pocket health care cost for a family of four in 2011. Or $815 the typical cost of an abdominal MRI in Chicago. Or $24,431 the hospital fee for having a pacemaker inserted in San Diego.

Those are the numbers that can leave you feeling helpless.

When youre ill, the last thing you should do is turn down care. Instead, learn to take charge of your health care costs to prevent your medical bill from making you even sicker.

(People) frequently overpay for services just because they dont know that theres price variation that you can get the exact same care at a different facility across the street for a fraction of the cost, says Dr. Jeffrey Rice, founder of HealthCareBlueBook.com, a free price comparison website for patients.

Rice often tells the story of his son, who needed outpatient foot surgery. Rice was initially quoted $37,000 for the procedure. His total after insurance and discounts would be around $20,000, the doctor told him. So Rice asked if there was another facility where they could get the procedure.

His new total? $1,500 for a happy and healthy son.

If there was a gas station that said $20 a gallon, you would not go there, correct? Rice asks. But in health care, thats how bad it is. There are people who pay five times too much for their health care every day.

Just ask

Gene Therapy Shows Early Promise for Heart Failure

WebMD News from HealthDay

By Amy Norton

HealthDay Reporter

THURSDAY, Feb. 21 (HealthDay News) -- When it comes to treating heart failure, the ultimate hope is to develop a therapy that repairs the damaged heart muscle.

Now, an early study hints at a way to do that by harnessing the body's natural capacity for repair.

Heart failure is a chronic, progressive condition where the heart cannot pump blood efficiently enough to meet the body's needs, which leads to problems like fatigue, breathlessness and swelling in the legs and feet. Most often, it arises after a heart attack leaves heart muscle damaged and scarred.

In the new study, researchers were able to use gene therapy to modestly improve symptoms in 17 patients with stage III heart failure -- where the disease is advanced enough that even routine daily tasks become difficult.

What is novel about the tactic, the researchers said, is that the gene therapy is designed to attract the body's own stem cells to the part of the heart muscle that's damaged. The hope is that the stem cells will then get some repair work done.

The findings, published Feb. 21 in the journal Circulation Research, are preliminary, and much more research needs to be done.

"This is a proof-of-concept study," explained lead researcher Dr. Marc Penn, a professor at Northeast Ohio Medical University in Rootstown, and director of research at Summa Cardiovascular Institute in Akron. But Penn and other heart failure experts said they were cautiously optimistic about the therapy's potential for at least some patients.
