Dana White: 'Cyborg's not part of' future of UFC women's division

As far as Dana White is concerned, when it comes to Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos, the train has already left the station.

The week before Saturday's historic UFC 157 card in Anaheim, Calif., which featured the first women's fight in UFC history, Santos made news with the announcement she had been released from her Zuffa/UFC deal and signed with Invicta FC.

But on Saturday at Honda Center, after Santos and manager Tito Ortiz were in the building to watch UFC women's bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey stop Liz Carmouche with yet another first-round armbar, White wouldn't rule out the possibility that the UFC still could end up making a Rousey-Santos fight one day. But the fight so many were clamoring for appears to be well off the tracks at this point.

"(Stuff is) rolling here, and Cyborg's not a part of it," White said after the post-event news conference for UFC 157. "They can have as many press conferences as they want to have, or show up here in the back or whatever they want to do. She had the opportunity to sign with the UFC. She chose not to. This thing's rolling. We're already moving."

Santos was the Strikeforce champion at 145 pounds before being stripped of her title following a positive steroids test. While she was suspended, Rousey dropped from 145 to 135, beat Miesha Tate for the bantamweight belt in March 2012, defended it against Sarah Kaufman in August and signed with the UFC to become its first female fighter and first female champion in December.

The area of contention between Rousey and Santos is the latter's apparent inability to cut to 135 pounds for a title fight. At a news conference announcing Santos' Invicta signing, Ortiz had Santos get on a scale, where she showed a walking weight of 160 pounds. She will fight Ediane Gomes at Invicta FC 5 on April 5 in a featherweight bout.

Ortiz and Santos hoped to sign with the UFC, but with the promotion currently only featuring a bantamweight division in the women's ranks, there would be no home for her at 145. Additionally, with the claim she can't make 135, Santos and Ortiz continue to say they want an eventual fight with Rousey - but at a catch weight of 140 pounds, without a title on the line.

That, White said, might be possible - if Rousey believes the fight has merit and wants to do it.

"She's the champ," White told MMAjunkie.com. "If Ronda comes one day and says, 'I've cleaned out this division, I feel like I've fought everybody, I'll move up to 140 and fight her,' if Cyborg's still fighting at that time, we'll see what happens."

But until then, Rousey has contenders at 135 in the UFC. White said an April fight between former champ Tate and Cat Zingano at the TUF 17 finale is almost certain to produce Rousey's next challenger. As successful as UFC 157 appears to have been from a media, attendance and live gate standpoint, a rematch between Rousey and Tate might be an even bigger draw based on their rivalry carrying over from the first meeting.

Cyborg urges better understanding of technology

Granada (Spain), Feb 26 (IANS/EFE) The artist whose prosthetic audio-visual implant makes him the world's first cyborg said here Monday that society needs to see technology "as a human creation, not as something extraterrestrial".

"It's very logical to use technology to enrich ourselves. Cybernetics can help everyone perceive what we cannot perceive," Neil Harbisson said in a speech at the University of Granada.

The 30-year-old artist, composer and activist was born with achromatopsia, a condition that limits colour perception to black and white.

Harbisson, a native of Northern Ireland who spent most of his youth in Spain, learned in 2003 of a possible cybernetic solution. He and a succession of cyberneticists developed the eyeborg, a head-mounted camera that translates colors into sound waves.

In 2009, a student at Spain's Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya found a way to put the eyeborg into a chip that can be implanted in the user's head.

The chip allows the user to perceive infrared and ultraviolet light that is beyond the range of human vision.

Harbisson says that with the implantation of the chip, he became a cyborg by virtue of "the union between the software and my brain".

He founded the Cyborg Foundation three years ago, aiming to help others follow the same path.

"In this decade we will stop using technology as a tool and we will use it as part of the body," Harbisson said in Granada.

The 21st century will witness the emergence of human beings whose bodies incorporate mechanical, electronic and cybernetic elements, he said.

Stretchable Batteries Could Power Cyborg Future

Our cyborg future may not be far off.

An ultra-stretchy battery could one day be used to power bionic eyeballs, brain-wave monitoring devices and robotic skins, new research suggests.

The new device, which embeds tiny lithium-based batteries in a silicon sheet, can stretch up to three times its initial length and could be recharged wirelessly, Yonggang Huang, study co-author and a mechanical engineer at Northwestern University, wrote to LiveScience in an email.

The new battery is described today (Feb. 26) in the journal Nature Communications.

Powering devices

For decades, science-fiction writers have envisioned dystopian worlds in which humans and machines are seamlessly integrated with bionic implants. But powering the cyborg future requires a way to conform power sources to these futuristic devices. [9 Cyborg Enhancements Available Right Now]

Other researchers have developed stretchy and paper-thin batteries before, but most didn't deform much or have the ability to recharge wirelessly, Huang wrote.

Toward that end, Huang and his colleagues embedded tiny lithium-ion batteries in a framework of conducting wires arranged in a repeating S-shaped pattern that, like a fractal, looks similar at several scales. The whole arrangement is printed onto a stretchable silicone sheet. The wires themselves are brittle, but uncoil like a spring, allowing the whole device to be flexible without forcing the delicate lithium-ion batteries to break.

To demonstrate that the concept actually worked, the team powered a red light-emitting diode (LED) while stretching and twisting the battery.

The researchers envision the battery being used for wearable gadgets, implantable brain-wave monitors, or other bionic devices.

Mauritian beaches hold clues to a lost continent

Tim Graham

Crystals found on the sandy beaches of Mauritius suggest that chunks of an ancient continent called "Mauritia" may lie beneath the ocean floor, between the land masses of India and Africa.

By Nidhi Subbaraman

The beaches of Mauritius surround the island like a foamy white trim and sprinkled in the sand are clues to a lost, submerged continent.

Ancient zircon crystals harvested from sand samples were found to be curiously older than the island itself. The island is only 8.9 million years old, but one of the hardy crystals dated back almost 2 billion years, and others are estimated to be at least 660 million years old.

Scientists who found the minerals explain that they belong to an ancient continent they have named "Mauritia" and estimate that there are chunks of it lying beneath the ocean and under the ocean floor between the land masses of India and Africa.A team led by Bjrn Jamtveit from the University of Oslo surmises that the telltale zircons rose to the surface on columns of hot magma welling up from under the crust. They coated Mauritius itself the product of a recent volcanic belch and remained there until they were picked up, sorted and analyzed by the Norwegian crew.

Mauritia would have been part of a single land mass called Rodinia that included whats now India and Madagascar, Jamtveit told National Geographic. Per the scientists' theory, Mauritia sank beneath the ocean when India was pried away from Africa to form the Indian Ocean.Their findings were published in Nature Geoscience this week.

While some experts agree that there isn't another likely source for the crystals, as Conall Mac Niocaill told Nature News, others like Jerome Dyment don't rule out the possibility that they could have landed on the beach on board human-made machinery or materials.

But based on what they've found, Jamtveit and and his team write that they fully expect to find other land masses hiding under the sea, too.

GKN upbeat as civil aerospace and foreign markets drive growth

GKN (LSE: GKN.L - news) , the car and aircraft parts maker, is expecting a strong 2013 driven by civil aerospace and international growth markets.

The FTSE 100 engineering group beat City expectations for 2012, reporting record profits across its business despite a weak car market in Europe.

Shares rose 4pc after group sales rose to 6.51bn last year from 5.75bn in 2011, while pre-tax profit jumped to 503m from 306m.

The company is forecasting further progress in 2013 as a whole from its automotive business, but cautioned that lower market demand in Europe would likely have an impact on first-half results.

The European market is soft and we dont expect that to change in the short term, said Nigel Stein, chief executive.

He added: The [global] automotive sector is expected to grow this year by about 2-3pc. We expect to do slightly better than that as were strong in growth areas like China, North America, Mexico, India.

The European car market shrank by 5pc in 2012, but grew by 17.6pc in North America as recovery continued, and by 5.8pc in China.

Sales within GKNs Driveline business - its largest - rose 16pc to 3.2bn in 2012.

The company was also upbeat about the prospects for its aerospace business, where it said it is benefiting from the rise in production of aircraft among its civil customers Airbus (Paris: NL0000235190 - news) and Boeing (NYSE: BA - news) . Commercial aircraft is expected to be around 70pc of GKNs aerospace business this year.

That affords the company some protection from the military side which is under pressure from shrinking defence budgets, and which GKN expects to decline this year.
