Aushon Biosystems Thrives with Increasing Demand for Personalized Medicine

BILLERICA, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

With a range of products and services driving the development of personalized medicine, Aushon Biosystems has appointed Thomas Mac Mahon, former president and CEO of Laboratory Corporation of America Holdings (LabCorp), to its board of directors. The expansion of its board builds on Aushons recent momentum as it is poised for significant growth in 2013.

Aushon provides a suite of multiplex immunoassay products and services for the discovery and development of the biomarkers necessary to enable personalized medicine innovation. Aushons multiplex approach involves simultaneously measuring and comparing multiple proteins which eliminates the cost and time obstacles that have traditionally been associated with personalized medicine development with the singleplex ELISA platform.

Multiplex technology allows us to cast a wider net across a diverse array of biologies known to play a role in the development of cancer and determine the response of pharmacological agents on them, saidDr. Andrew Nixon, associate professor of medicine and director of the Phase I Biomarker Laboratory at Duke University. Using this research approach, were better able to allocate our limited resources both patient sample and money for optimal success.

Life sciences and diagnostics industry veteran Mac Mahon took notice of Aushons multiplex approach as critical to the future of personalized medicine.

The current gold-standard approach to protein analysis comes with unnecessary cost and time barriers that prevent personalized medicine from becoming a reality for all, said Mac Mahon. Im excited to continue my work advancing diagnostics and personalized medicine advancement with Aushon which has created the approach that breaks down the current barriers and will drive the future of personalized medicine.

Mac Mahon served as chairman of LabCorp from 1996 to 2009 and as CEO and president from 1997 to 2006. Previously, he held the roles of senior vice president of Hoffmann-La Roche Inc., president of Roche Diagnostics Group, and chairman of PharMerica Corporation. Mac Mahon has also been presiding director of Aristotle Holding, Inc. and Express Scripts Holding Company since May 2008 and also serves as a director of SynapDx Corporation.

Aushon Poised for Continued Growth

With key areas of expertise in oncology and inflammatory diseases, Aushon now works with nine out of the top 10 pharmaceutical companies and is expecting more than 30 percent year-over-year revenue growth this year. To support this growth and anticipated doubling of revenue in 2014, Aushon also plans to increase its employee base by 25 percent in 2013. In addition, Aushon will expand its global footprint, with current employees and distributors across North America, Europe, Asia and Australia.

Ultimately, personalized medicine will bring better treatments at lower costs to the average patient. This can only happen if we empower discovery through accurate, time- and cost-effective means, said Pete Honkanen, CEO, Aushon. Tom is an invaluable resource to Aushon as we continue to drive transformation in the industry.

LSU considering research focused medical school for Baton Rouge

By McKenzie Womack

LSUs Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge is seeking to open a four-year medical school focused on research, and the idea has drawn tentative support from the LSU System Board of Supervisors.

The LSU medical education expansion, still in proposal stages, would be a branch of LSU Health New Orleans. Each of the four years of study would enroll about 25 students, said Pennington Executive Director Steve Heymsfield. There would be a total of 100 total students.

Initially, the school would add students a year at time.

Steve Nelson, dean of LSU Health New Orleans, said the medical school already has regional programs, but expanding to Pennington is one way to offer students more opportunities. He said the possibility of expanding the Lafayette branch at ULL, which is directed toward primary care, is another option.

There is nothing concrete, as yet, said Nelson. It is all dependent upon securing additional funding.

A Pennington medical training program has initial support on the LSU Board of Supervisors, said member Ronnie Anderson of Ethel, La.

There are more applicants than positions in Louisiana, said Anderson. This is a great opportunity for Baton Rouge and for opening up opportunities for med students. It can keep students and doctors in the state.

Board member Lee Mallett of Iowa, La., agrees. If thats what we decide to do, its a great thing. Anytime you can increase doctors and education, its great.

Opened in 1988, Pennington, which is located on Perkins Avenue in Baton Rouge, is one of the 10 campuses under the LSU System. It is a stand-alone unit whose focus is research. Its mission is to eliminate chronic disease, Heymsfield said. Its research has gained national recognition.

Iberville students explore Tulane Medical School

Central Louisiana Area Health Education Center (CLAHEC) and Tulane Medical School recently presented the "Career MD" program for high school juniors and seniors living in CLAHEC's ten-parish region around the Baton Rouge area.

This unique program was a one-day interactive experience that provided students who are interested in medicine or a health career with an opportunity to observe a day's activities on a medical school campus.

Qualifying students totaling 28 traveled via coach bus to Tulane's medical school campus in New Orleans on Jan. 22. Students were given the opportunity to learn about heart and lung sounds, to measure respiratory rate and blood pressure, to learn basic life support practices working with simulators and to practice suturing and knot tying skills.

They visited the hospital to learn about the Child's Play Therapy Center and the Pediatric ICU. They were able to work with staff from the Standardized Patient Center and saw how medical students practice physical examinations on an actual person. Participants were also able to interact with current Tulane medical students and find out about the "life of a medical student."

Tulane faculty, students and staff were on hand to greet students on arrival in the morning. Dr. Ernest Sneed, Assistant Dean for Student Affairs talked with the students about the application process and specified requirements. He gave the students much encouragement and advice about choices they were going to face during their undergraduate and graduate studies.

Jameshaulyn Fernandez, a junior at Plaquemine HS, was selected as one of the participants for the day.

"The most valuable part of the day for me was when they said do what interests you and what you like," Fernandez said. "I will continue having a very positive attitude and stay dedicated. I dream of being a pediatric surgeon, so I know for a fact that I will pursue that dream. Today, I felt like I was with my loved ones."

CLAHEC is a non-profit, community-based agency dedicated to improving healthcare in Louisiana and addressing the problem of healthcare professional shortages in our state. A primary goal of CLAHEC is to identify local needs and develop programs that will encourage young people to consider a career in healthcare and to practice in rural and underserved communities where their services are urgently needed.

Nan Ewing, program coordinator, states that "the 'Career MD program is an excellent tool for students to learn about medical school and develop ideas for their own future careers through observation, hands-on experiences, and interaction with Tulane medical students and faculty."

E-Commerce China Dangdang Inc. Faces Walmart Competition

E-Commerce China Dangdang Inc. stock got dumped by Alkeon Capital Management LLC and Manulife Asset Management in the past quarter. Their actions are justified given that the stock lost 1.5 percent of its value so far in this year. In last quarter, major hedge fund outfit Maverick Capital also closed its position in the company, dealing it another blow. Citadel Advisors also liquidated its holding in the company. Institutional selling is generally a negative sign for the future prospects of a company. Register to download the free technical analysis on E-Commerce China Dangdang Inc. at

E-Commerce China Dangdang Inc. is based on Amazon's model and is currently facing major crisis in the form of increasing competition. Major retail giants like Amazon and Walmart have renewed their bid to capture the Chinese market and this poses dual a threat to home-grown companies like E-Commerce China Dangdang Inc.

The company is mainly invested in China and the doubts about the pace of economic growth in China put a dampener on the company's growth prospects as well. It is also facing an increase in its costs, putting pressure on its margins. At the very same time, its stock is bound to benefit from the growth in number of internet users.

Liberty Interactive Corporation Augments TripAdvisor Stake

It’s Hard to Gross Out a Libertarian: Jonathan Haidt on Sex, Politics, and Disgust – Video

It #39;s Hard to Gross Out a Libertarian: Jonathan Haidt on Sex, Politics, and Disgust
"Morality isn #39;t just about stealing and killing and honesty, it #39;s often about menstruation, and food, and who you are having sex with, and how you handle corpses," says NYU social psychologist Jonathan Haidt, who is author of THE RIGHTEOUS MIND: WHY GOOD PEOPLE ARE DIVIDED BY POLITICS. Haidt argues that our concern over these victimless behaviors is rooted in our biology. Humans evolved to feel disgusted by anything that when consumed makes us sick. That sense of disgust then expanded "to become a guardian of the social order." This impulse is at the core of the culture war. Those who have a low sensitivity to disgust tend to be liberals or libertarians; those who are easily disgusted tend to be conservative. Haidt discussed his views on morality and politics at an event hosted by the Reason Foundation, which was held on February 19, 2013 at the Museum of Sex. Haidt #39;s lecture was followed by a Q A with New York Times Science Columnist John Tierney. Approximately 35 minutes. Camera by Jim Epstein and Naomi Brockwell. Edited by Epstein. An Open Letter To Glenn Beck From The Libertarian Org Founder He Called A ‘Jerk’ And ‘Nazi’

As we reported here, last Friday on his radio show, Glenn Beck went after the Nazi, fascistic, jerk libertarians who refuse to accept his newfound libertarianism. As it turns out, he was largely referring to the president of Students for Liberty (SFL), Alexander McCobin.

During his opening remarks at the 2013 International SFL Conference the same event at which Ann Coulter called libertarians pussies McCobin called on Beck to renounce his previously staunch conservative and neoconservative positions and engage the libertarian community in an open and honest way. Beck did not take well to such criticism, referring to McCobin as a grand inquisitor, among other names. Andrew Kirell, Sr. Editor, Mediaite.

Below is an open response letter from McCobin, printed exclusively at Mediaite.

Dear Mr. Beck,

There is no reason you should have heard of me before. Im just a guy who became enamored with the principles of liberty in 9th grade and grew to appreciate the philosophical rigor and enormous individual and societal benefits that flow from them. Im now a graduate student in philosophy, and co-founder and president of a nonprofit organization called Students For Liberty (SFL) that began 5 years ago to support libertarian students and student organizations.

Today, SFL has over 900 student organizations in our network, is run by over 250 volunteer student leaders who are working to change the world, runs dozens of conferences for thousands of students around the world, provides a plethora of resources to young libertarians everywhere, such as 175,000 free copies of our 3rd publication, After the Welfare State. SFL is dedicated to expanding the younger generations understanding and appreciation of the philosophy of freedom and the benefits that may be derived from it.

This is admittedly an ambitious and long-term goal, but one that I am optimistic about and pursue because of the inherent value of liberty. I am writing this letter today because of the comments you made about me on your show this past Friday, February 22, 2013. Regrettably, you called me a Nazi, a fascist, a jerk, a guy who thinks hes God. I submit I am none of those things, or at least I dont try to be. I have no intention of getting caught up in name-calling or responding to the many strawmen you constructed and then ridiculed. There is no profit in that. Its water under the bridge. So, I admit that my rhetoric may have been exaggerated during my opening speech at the 6th International Students For Liberty Conference on February 15, 2013 where 1,400+ young libertarians gathered to learn about the ideas of liberty and strategize how to advance freedom. But those comments resonated with the attendees, as your staffer told you, and the substantive point I was trying to make was apropos: for more than a decade, you worked very hard and very successfully at branding yourself as a key figure in conservatism, not just economic conservatism, but also social and neoconservatism. Not only are these not libertarian positions, but to associate libertarianism with them makes it that much harder to introduce libertarianism to more people, especially young people who are turned off by conservatism. After you spent over 10 years denouncing libertarianism, actively working against our causes, and building up a certain reputation for yourself directly opposed to our ideas, I think its reasonable for me and other libertarians to be skeptical when you suddenly claim to be a libertarian. I really hope you have changed your views and that you are committed to libertarianism (your segment on Friday included more renunciations of your past conservative positions than I have ever heard from you, which I admire). However, its going to take more than new window dressing for me and many others to believe that youre a libertarian. Show us that youre libertarian through the positions you take beyond conservatism, the groups you support, the people you invite to your show, indeed, even just in the conversations you are willing to have.

I truly hope there is an opportunity to open a constructive dialogue that could be to our, and to the cause of libertys, benefit. In fact, I emailed your team last week, on Wednesday, February 20th, before your February 22nd segment, and offered to have an open conversation about the meaning of libertarianism. I received a response later that evening that immediately shot me down. In short, the message I received was that you and your team had your own conception of libertarianism and had nothing more to learn about the philosophy, at least not from people like me. I am going to hope that this was an error on the part of one of your staffers rather than a true reflection of your beliefs, so will make the same offer to you here: I would like to have an open, honest conversation about the meaning of libertarianism with you if you are up for it. It can be a private conversation between the two of us if you dont want prying ears, or it can be public for others to benefit as well. Are you willing to have that conversation?
